Fun Fact: This movie was in production at the same time as the Prince of Egypt. If any of the animators missed their deadlines or were goofing off, they were sent to work on Shrek. This became known as getting Shreked at Dreamworks.

I also didn't pick up on what happened to mama bear until a few years ago, nor did I figure out what was happening to Gingy at the start (though obviously as a kid you probably have no idea what waterboarding is). A lot of the darker jokes in the Shrek films go over your head as a kid, it's why going back and watching them as an adult is so rewarding.

The opening line to All Star is probably the single most perfect meme the internet has ever concocted. But for some reason watching this, I was struck by how good of a needle drop moment it really is. The editing of the visual with the first line, and the sound effect of the slamming door punctuating the music, is impeccable. 13:46 Actually, Calvin, Prince of Egypt is the movie that made Dreamworks big. Antz was a modest success, but I remember all the talk around Prince of Egypt, especially during it's release and Oscar season. There were whole news stories/segments dedicated to talking about how much of a masterpiece Prince of Egypt was, and how it put Dreamworks on the map as a full-fledged rival to Disney. Shrek came out at a time when Dreamworks was already pretty well known as a studio, but Shrek is probably more well-known than Prince of Egypt today because it managed to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, and satirize pop culture and fairytales in a timeless manner that hadn't been seen before in an animated movie.
