Although in YJ, it was the Raymond Jenson (or was it Jensen?) version instead of Rudy Jones... Technically Ray was the first in the comics, although Rudy is the better-known one. There’s also others even in the comics but less-known than these two. The “Supergirl” show actually had two versions: Rudy was a Season 2 villain of the week, Raymond appeared a couple seasons later in a recurring role that built up his becoming Parasite… and then after he became so, never returning to the series to my recollection.

I always forget that Rudy actually has a pretty sympathetic backstory originally, he was even pretty brave trying to save those two security guards from getting shot. Seems like the transformation really messed him up fast - I wonder if it was the chemicals themselves that made his personality get so much worse, or if it's just the nature of the specific powers he got that basically encourage him to hurt others in order to make himself stronger.

Rudy was a doormat. Someone with no self-confidence that everyone else pushed around, and seeking payback for that once he got his power. Sort of like the Spectacular Spider-Man version of Dr. Octopus.

2:25 - I've always loved the sound the animated series used when Superman uses his super-speed. It's so calming 😌 (it feels light yet heavy; and I love how it's always like 2 miliseconds behind the animation, giving a sense of how quick he is)

Parasite is one of my three favorite Superman villains in the DCAU. He's not a billionaire genius like Luthor, a living AI supercomputer like Brainiac, or some some immensely powerful otherworldly entity, like Darkseid. Instead he's just a normal guy with an inferiority complex who accidentally ends up with powers, and decides to use those powers to terrorize Metropolis because he wants everyone else to feel what it's like to be used/treated as a doormat. I also like that Rudy's condition is both a gift and a curse. He can absorb energy, knowledge and abilities, but he also looks monstrous, and the way they draw his mouth as just a shaded indentation on his face now implies that he's no longer capable of eating, getting all his sustenance from feeding through touch.

Parasite was a new villain I never saw before back than after watching the Super friends, watched like a lot of reruns back in the 90s. He definitely reminded me of X-men's Rouge, except "less prettier" between sucking up powers and leaving his victims in a comatose state. Course that was the safe version in the animated series. In the comics, he looks a lot more grosser but still purple and actually sucks the life out of his victims until they become husks. Parasite was a major threat to Superman, not just sucking his powers but knowing his secret identity! Luckily his mind usually hits a reset since it doesn't last long.

Parasite would actually kill Batman if he absorbed him. His touch reduces people into skeletons in the comics. They obviously had to censor this for the cartoon, but only metahumans like Superman and Wonder Woman can withstand his touch and just end up feeling fatigued as a side effect.

Oh man, this is like the one episode I really watching as a kid. Scared the trap out of me. Also dang, Rudy looks a lot like Dr Destiny from the Justice League show. Like an uncanny similar look. Until he turned into Parasite I thought it was still the Dr and they were just bringing this character over from the Superman series.

Definitely my favorite adaptation of Parasite. I just love the more human element given to him. The classic origin of the small-time crook turned into a monster.

Parasite is one of the most underrated Superman villains. Such a terrifying villain that has so much potential to become a great villain for Superman in a live-action movie that can even tap into elements of body horror like Clayface in BTAS, as his ability to literally drain the life out of his enemies, including Superman and even uses Superman's powers and memories against him makes him all the more of a dangerous threat. While I do feel like Parasite in Superman: The Animated Series had a lot more potential as a villain, and I do feel like his design could've been a lot more creepy, I do like how much of an unapologetic villain Rudy Jones is this show where he may have been horribly mutated. However, you still know he's a bad guy and enjoys his new abilities despite his appearance.

Pre-Crisis Parasite had that ability, but he got nerfed post-Crisis. That's the trend for a lot of Superman's villains because Superman himself was nerfed post-Crisis too, even Lex Luthor was smarter before the reboot.

Superman usually defeats Parasite and Metallo by outsmarting them since he can't get close to them. Zod is usually just a big brawl where Superman simply punches him harder.

Just because Eric mentioned it, I kinda hate it when writers make Superman super smart as well. He’s by no means stupid but he’s already arguably the most overpowered character in comics, one of the few ways to create tension with him is through him being outsmarted. My general rule of thumb is that Lex should be as smart as Superman is strong and vice versa.

They had to make him weaker because he was simply too powerful in most of the comics at that time. It made it very difficult to write drama into the show when the hero is nearly unstoppable. They were also aiming for a Max Fleischer style cartoon, and in the earlier Superman stories he was considerably less powerful.

@@J0ECRAWF15H You're mistaking powerful w/ overpowered. Goku shook the universe, but he definitively lost against Beerus. He also couldn't handle Broly on his own, unable to last longer against Jiren, is still way below Whis, and has absolutely no chance against Zeno. Look no further than the fact that developers constantly struggle in making a good Superman game, yet there are lots of beloved Dragon Ball games. Because the concept of DB itself is that Goku will always be an underdog compared to the main villain of every saga no matter if it's Mercenary Tao or Zamasu. Meanwhile, the villains in this show are the underdogs.
