When you were talking about living in a hotel, back in the 1970s it was very common for older people to live in reasonably priced hotels, usually three star hotels. When people retired, they didn't want to have the problem with managing a big house, especially if their children were older and/or maybe they were widowed. So they would stay in a hotel and usually get better rates. I am not sure if it is common now, but back in 1975/1979 when Fawlty Towers was made and aired, it was fairly common. More richer older people stayed in 4 or 5 star hotels.

The scene in which Basil needs three tries to open a wine bottle because the cork keeps breaking, was a complete accident. John Cleese admits that it could never have worked that well if they'd tried to do it deliberately.
@carlhartwell7978 Жыл бұрын
Never knew that, but it does make sense. Certainly if that is the case, it's part happenstance. But also what crew but Cleese's would carry on filming with Cleese carrying on acting/improvising? I mean there are other actors I can think of, Keaton, Sellars, Milligan, Williams, Carey, Murphy, even Martin or Gervais (all comedians coincidentally) with whom similar scenes were no doubt shot. Part happenstance, part genius. Comedians (standup especially) do seem to have a penchant for great acting I've often thought.

The ending sequence with the scream is a perfect piece of editing. To quick it doesn’t land, to long it loses its sting but the cut to credits on the scream is just perfect!!!
@t.e.sprocketeering Жыл бұрын
Very much agreed. Cleese, I think, could be quite particular about finding the precise amount of ‘x’ required to make a scene as funny as possible. I know a considerable amount of thought was put into choosing a branch of exactly the right size and flexibility for a certain future scene, for example - in order to make the action simultaneously an over the top reaction while remaining completely impotent - and thereby, funny.

Bernard Cribbins - who appeared as the Spoon Salesman here, also appeared years after this on Doctor Who as "Wilf" - which you are aware of. You might not know that he actually appeeared in one of two British movie adaptions of Doctor Who in the 1960's (about a decade before Fawlty Towers). His movie is called Dalek Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. - well worth a review and features actor Peter Cushing as Doctor Who and was Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars!

A couple of fun facts: 1. According to Cleese, Basil Fawlty was based on a real person that he and the Pythons encountered in 1970. He actually ran a hotel in Torquey, and he was, according to Cleese, “The rudest man [he’d] ever met.” He was so rude, in fact, that he chased the other Pythons out of the hotel. Cleese stayed because he was too lazy to pack up and move. Apparently he got Basil’s penchant for looking busy when someone came to the front desk and acting put out by every little request from the actual man. 2. The actress who played Polly was Cleese’s wife at the time. I think they divorced between the 1st and 2nd season, but Fawlty Towers is really their brainchild.

Plenty more to come, it doesn't get any worse in the coming 8 eps, you can be assured of that! Every ep from the literal start to the literal finish is a sublime masterclass in how to do a sitcom. The characters, the acting, the scripts, the dialogue, the direction, the editing, the pacing and so much more is perfect in every episode. It doesn't drop in standard, I wouldn't even venture that it gets better, it's just ALL excellent.

It's difficult to fully describe the place Bernard Cribbins has in the hearts of at least a generation of British people, he was *everywhere* for years, from the early Dr Who movies in the early 60s to Wilf in the 21st Century Who, from Carry On films to Jackanory (an after-school programme where a 'name' would sit in a chair and read a story from a book - I know, crazy idea!) The programme ran for decades and Bernard Cribbins was the most regular and popular reader, that's why he is so fondly remembered.
