Did you ever read how he died during the filming of Gladiator? During a break from production he had a drinking contest against several royal navy sailors in a pub in Malta. Out drank them all and arm wrestled them. Then had a heart attack in the aftermath. Crazy way to go out.

He drank 8 pints of German lager, 12 shots of Rum, 1/2 bottle of whiskey and some shots of Cognac, beat five sailors in arm wrestling matches before collapsing from a heart attack. Sad thing was that he'd managed to cut back on his alcoholism during filming and was pressured into the drinking contest because of his reputation as a hell raiser.

Top ten of my favourite movies. My #1 favourite soundtrack. Too short on time to go through all these comments and see if someone said this: the slow mo in the first battle that you didn’t like was an on-the-fly practical fix. They didn’t schedule enough time to shoot the battle, and the sun was going down. Rather than spend the time and extensive money to redress the scene, reset everything, pay actors for another days’ work, and fall behind schedule, they shot it with the different shutter speed to match the lighting of earlier in the day. I don’t find it distracting at all. I find it dramatic, and when I found out why they did it was impressed with the ingenuity of fixing a very costly error with almost no time to think.

Fun fact the fight scene at the start was filmed at Black Park not far from me in London, UK. Ridley did get permission from the Forestry there to burn down part of the park which was due felling. As I believe the only CGI was the Colosseum scene where you see how many are present in seats. Great film with classic actors, Oliver Reede died during the filming of Gladiator and they used his voice and previous footage to include him to the end.

The real Commodus did like to do stuff in the arena, but he also ruled for 12 years, not the year or so this movie portays...and was strangled in a bathtub by his wrestling teacher...who was probably paid to kill him. the reason the theme is very similar to PotC theme is because Klaus Badelt was commissioned to score PotC1, but he got a very small time window to compose, this made it too difficult for him so he got help from 5+ other composers one of which was Hans Zimmer who composed the main themes and the rest was done by Badelt with help from Jim Dooley, James McKee Smith, Blake Neely, Trevor Morris (who later did Vikings), Geoff Zanelli (who later did many films like PotC5), Steve Jablonsky (who later did almost anything directed by Michael Bay), Nick Glennie-Smith (who worked with Zimmer a couple of times mainly on The Rock) and last but not least Ramin Djawadi (who later did Game Of Thrones and Westworld)

Hi guys, I like your reactions and thank you for this. When i was see this movie for the first time it was amazing. But now, when i was reading history about old Rome changing my opinion. Especially the last scene of the movie, when the Emperor fights with the gladiator, is ridiculous. The praetorian guard would never allow the emperor to be killed, because they were well paid and that way they would lose their jobs. They was a bodyguars and the emperor would never enter the arena.

All the reactors skip the ascension into the coliseum after Commodus stabs Maximus. That scene to me is the greatest scene in cinema history. The stakes of glorious battle. No way out. Either Maximus dies alone or he takes Commodus down with him in glorious vengeance. Commodus has the weight of betrayal and insecurity on his back, clinging to his power for dear life. Maximus has the weight of vengeance and Marcus’ wishes and the fate of Rome on his. It’s such a glorious scene them ascending to the light of the coliseum slowly with the epic choir

fun fact: the pretorian guards, the emperor's bodyguards, had more power than you think. basically, the emperors had to keep the guards happy and well paid because they were in charge of protecting him and they could easily not protector him or worse, kill him if they did shit that they weren't happy with. i mean, who do you think killed Caligula? so that part of the finale where the guards just stopped listening to commodus was very accurate.

Rome went to hell really quick in terms of leadership. I hope in the sequel they touch on how powerful the Praetorian Guard became during the Year of Five Emperors time period.

That's the problem with dictatorships. If you have a great leader the country will prosper and will be way more effective/stronger than democracies. When you have a bad leader though. Ouch

@@cassu6 Yup..you get an enlightened guy who creates the empire or expands it.. then you get his son or sons making a shit of the job by being morons or fighting for the inheritance... so many examples in history... Take the roman Empire... in the III rd and IV th centuries they fought each other for power more then they fought the barbarians or the persians... No wonder they destroyed the empire.

The end with (forgot the guy) where he burys them in the arena sand. That was an improv last-second scene the actor said they should add. So they did. Really worked well for an final scene.

Rick mentioned that he likes Roman history. Just curious is you guys have seen HBO's series Rome. Its the story of Caesar and Augustus and is an absolute recommendation. It was basicaly what eventually inspired HBO to make Game of Thrones. Tonnes of actors from HBO Rome also played a role in GoT, like Ciaran Hinds, Tovias Mekenzie and Indira Varma. Plus one of the main roles is played by Ray Stevenson, i mean, c'mon any better?

Commodus shows from the start just how painfully stupid he is. While it might be selfishly justifiable to want Maximus dead, it would've been far more beneficial to his position to have Maximus taken out and killed, then claim he was assassinated and martyr him for Commodus' own gain. Say some savage that survived the battle, got him as he was walking the grounds of the camp. Then, praise him, make him the hero his troops believe he was, give his family special status, and use his name as a rallying cry to bolster support for his claim to the throne. As it is, had Quintus agreed that Maximus' family would be well-cared for, even given special status (at Commodus' order), he probably would've gone off to his death with no resistance. Commodus CREATED the problem by giving him something to fight for. Had they just promised (and kept the promise) to care for his family and elevate them, he might've just let himself die for their gain. Like killing yourself for the life insurance to help your family. Commodus was just an idiot. He was kind of terrifying, and extraordinarily dangerous...but very very stupid.

Fun fact in addtion to Rick's: Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were real people, maximus definitely was not. Marcus Aurelius is known as the Philosopher King, he was a wise ruler that spent his life in the borders of rome fighting German Barbarians. but he never wanted at any point in time, to give power back to the senate (honestly the senate was usually a bunch of corrupt old men that wanted the power remain with the Aristocracy and not the people) When Marcus Died (commodus didn't kill him), Commodus basically spent his entire rule not doing what the last 5 emperors before him (who were widely regarded as the best Roman Emperors) did. He spent it spending the Roman treasury for bread and circuses to make the people happy, he spent so much that he was bankrupting the Roman Treasury. he also spent his days in the arena, but there was no danger, he mostly fought animals that absolutely had little to no chance of escaping or harming him. he killed hippos, giraffes, Ostriches, and all sorts of exotic animals. eventually he was assassinated. and thus the Pax Romana (The Peace inside the borders of the Empire) came to an end. and Rome just steadily went into decline after, it would never reach the same heights that it did during the period of the 5 Good Emperors.
