The Praetorian Guard was a body of elite soldiers who acted as bodyguards for the emperor of the Roman Empire.

Yep, they were the secret service protection for the emperor. Maximus was in charge of the felix legion armies of the north.

and them turning on the emperor is actually very historically accurate. if the guard weren't paid enough, weren't respected enough or simply didn't like the emperor, they would turn on him. at the very least, they wouldn't protect him. at the very most, they just straight up kill him themselves. look up how the roman emperors died and you'd be surprised to see how many died of "killed by the praetorian guard".

11:56 - when Lucilla said "my father favors you now" implies that at some point, maybe years earlier, Maximus intended to marry Lucilla, but the emperor didnt see Maximus as a proper suitor. Given how sour Maximus still looked, he might really loved her and felt somewhat crossed.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this movie happened offscreen! Oiver Reed (Proximo) had a heart attack and died suddenly about 3/4 of the way through filming. It was supposed to be Proximo who buried the statuettes in the arena at the end. USing footage from the editing room floor and some CGI magic and a stand-in "back" for Proximo's deagh scene, they finished the film and let Juba survive and bury the statuettes.

Although it's true that Commodus was a crap emperor, he didn't murder his father, Marcus Aurelius. Marcus Aurelius was a great leader, philosopher, thinker, strategist, and a man full of virtue (he was a devotee of the Stoic school of philosophy). The murder was a dramatic device, and a very good one for the purpose of this film. You can still read The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, which is really just a journal he wrote, often while on campaign, as shown in the film. He was a bit of a guru, lol, as odd as that sounds for someone in his position.

roman emperors were often times elected by the senate if the emperor didn't declare an heir. a lot of times, children or relatives of the emperor weren't always the next in line for the throne. hell, the emperor didn't have to pick someone related to them as their heir. hence why commidus, when he found out his dad wasn't picking him to be emperor, asked which senator was taking over.

I firmly believe that Quintus felt like trash betraying his general in the beginning. In the uncut version, several Preatorian soldiers under his command were shot in the heart for failing to execute Maximus, even though Quintus went to bat for their integrity. He had seen enough from Commodus. The thing about ancient Rome is that it was brutal. Families killed fathers, sisters, children on mass to stay on top. It wasn't uncommon for people in Quintus or Lucilla's position to survive any way possible...Gladiator 2 comes out in a couple weeks 😊

@30:56 normally when a spectacle where it would seem unfair(one side having horses bows, chariots, armor)it would be where the predetermined losers would be criminals sentenced to death in the arena. The fact that the group Crowe was on was doing this is B.S. 1-3 of the owners gladiators would have fought evenly against others. In fact, I believe it was Commodus(villain of the movie)2 gladiators fought to a standstill(after a certain time, each piece of armor is removed to make the fight not go on too long)these 2 were so good they wound up fighting bare knuckle, commodus freedthem both

This movie is one of my alltime favorites.. bitnit does play a little loose with history... Marcus Aurelius was considered one ofnthe greatest emperors of Rome, he was the last of the 5 emperors who ruled during the Pax Romana (Roman Peace), a time when they were able to solidify their borders enough to repel invasions and the people enjoyed prosperity. His son Commodus, although a self serving a-hole like in this movie, may or may not have been as morally twisted as in this movie. But he did NOT kill his father. Probably. His father DID name him in ascension, and the 2 co-ruled for 3 years until Aurelius's death. Commodus ruled for another 10 years until he was murdered, possibly assassinated. By his sparring partner (he loved sparring matches and also joined in arena one on one matches). There were more than one plot against him, and one of them DID involve his sister, who he banished along with 2 other co-conspirators. The next year he had the 3 conspirators executed.

Maximus was a general in the roman Empire. Comodus did fight the gladiators in the arena. He was trained by a slave/gladiator named Narcissus. Comodus gave him his freedom so that he could train him to fight in the Coliseum. Narcissus ended up killing Comodus in 192 AD because he found out that gladiators whom Comodus fought were given dull swords under his instruction, and those gladiator were worked up so much that they were tired by the time the fought Comodus. Also, his sister was the evil one trying to find ways to kill Comodus for the throne because she was older than him. She felt she needed to run the empire and not this young emperor. That is why he fought in the arena as a gladiator, to show that even though he was young, he was brave and could fight. Comodus lived a very lonely life, didn't trust anyone because of the many times people were trying to kill him.

In the uncut version Comodus does something that Quintus does not like. And then to top it off, he stabs maximus before the last fight. Quintus, as a true soldier does not respect, cowardice, that’s why he does not give the Emperor a sword at the end. also you have to remember, that Quintas did not know that the emperor was going to make maximus the next Cesar. So Quintus thought his loyalty was supposed to be for Commodus.

"Hows it coming out of his mouth?" That was an unfortunate edit... just seconds before, Max had smached the guy in his face with his shield, broke his nose... and then when he got him in the foot and dude doubled over in pain the blood spilled out of his mouth hole in his mask. He wasnt actually bleeding from the mouth cuz he got stabbed in the foot.

No, it wasn't. "Sins of the father" was the very opposite of Roman tradition, and most inheritors of the Empire were "adopted" as adults anyways. Centuries after this period it was sometimes a thing, due to sons increasingly being automatically associated with their fathers Imperial claim, but Commodus' action here is deeply un-Roman, even anti-Roman.

I know it isn't the point of the movie and it's boring to hear about it but gladiators weren't put to death. Gladiature was like the WWE of their time. Extremely valuable athletes who put up shows. They were trained and valuable, as football players would be today. You wouldn't want your gladiator to die in the arena and it wasn't the purpose. At the time "slave" had a realy different value aswell. It was more like a social status. Doctors were slaves as they bound their lives to the people they took care of. Slaves could own slaves. Anyways, I love this movie non the less
