The one thing I will always love about this episode is the ending; the words “and they both lived happily ever after”, but then the “ever after” dissolves, because it wasn’t ever after, only 24 years. And then the “and they both lived” dissolves, because they didn’t both live. But the one word, “happily” remains, because they were happy, and that’s what counts.

You're both right: 24 years may not be forever but since they are both Time Travellers, they can pop in and out whenever and wherever they like. They can have numerous adventures altogether. For them, time is just a timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly thing.

For River, it's before the library but after The Angels Take Manhattan where she's just become a professor. The stuff about the doorstep and the suit Aaron mentioned was said in the library. "Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you - the future you, I mean - you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver; that should've been a clue."

Definitely. The only way to top it would have been if he had said "Penny in the air......and the penny falls." and then "Hello Sweetie." The penny line would be a call back to River's earliest adventure with The Doctor from her perspective (Let's Kill Hitler), and it was the line she would always say when people didn't catch on to things, including the fact that the Doctor didn't recognize _her_ because her face was different. It would be the perfect mirror.

I found 'The Husbands of River Song' to be one of the most underrated Xmas specials. It was a charming story about two people who love each other yet aren't sure if the other loves them back, the moment when she recognises the Doctor and the ending on Darillium are both my favourite scenes, and it proved to be a fitting farewell for River.

It may, indeed, be a nod to Rory's father, but archaeologists utilize trowels as part of their excavation tools - it's for when much smaller amounts of earth need to be moved, with a greater degree of control than you'd get with a shovel or a pick. Watch a few old episodes of "Time Team" and you will see trowels all over the place!

I once tried watching all the River episodes in her order. I though I didn’t repeat it if she was different ages on the same episode. Honestly I'm not entirely sure if this will be the definitive end for the character. There have been times where I felt the character was at the end but was proven wrong. I.e Name of the Doctor.

I like that River is waiting for the doctor to have some elaborate plan to save her but all he did was make sure that they could live with eachother in one place for 24 years. Usually they only pass eachother by but this is when they both knew eachother the most and they got to stop and spend some time alone.

The Library wasn't the last story in River's timeline. The River in The Name of the Doctor was the digital River from the Library and it's sort of implied that she "died" at the end of it, after the Doctor "let her go."

Let me just correct Aaron a tad on River's timeline. This River would have come after The Angels Take Manhattan. And yes this does take place before the Library episodes, where she tells the 10th Doctor of the singing towers which is why the Doctor is always putting it off, he knew because River told him it was their last night together. But, the last time River sees the Doctor is during Name of the Doctor where she is already in the computer.

The guy at the restaurant actually goes through River's diary in this episode and confirms that River came into this episode directly from the events of Angels Take Manhattan. So River's timeline is basically. 1 - Escaping the Silence and turning into Mels 2 - Growing up with Amy/Rory and turning into River 3 - Being arrested for murdering the Doctor, but escaping to help him with adventures 4 - Being released from prison and becoming a professor 5 - Watching her parents "die" in New York 6 - Her final date with the 12th Doctor 7 - Dying at the Library after meeting the 10th Doctor, but he uploads her minds to the library computer 8 - In "Name of the Doctor" the 11th Doctor encounters the digital consciousness of River on Trenzolore.

So we mostly see River with the Eleventh Doctor and we only see River once with the Twelfth Doctor When she met the Tenth Doctor she said things like "Not my Doctor" or "The real you. The future you I mean..." It makes me wonder if River's Doctor is actually Twelfth, and not Eleventh...

I think she means 12. Although she marries 11, she spends 24 years with 12. She had very important moments with 11 but they weren't continuous. I can only imagine what her and 12 get up to for 24 years. That would make her the longest running companion he ever had.

OF COURSE she meant 12. On screen we saw mostly her with 11, but the truth is that she spent far more time with 12 and the direct episode after this one is Silence in the Library with 10. In fact she said to Tennant's Doctor: "the future you came to my doorstep with a new haircut and a suit, we went to Derillium to see the singing towers... and your cried. You didn't tell me why, but I supposed you knew it was time... time to come in the library. You gave me a screwdriver". We actually NEVER saw the Doctor say to River is real name... also in the wedding of River Song the 11 Doctr didn't say his name to her... I suppose the 12 Doctor said it to her during those 24 years. Because they pratically become a real couple... I supposed is also in those 24 years that she learnt everything about TimeLords, she learnt the alphabet and she learnt how to drive a TARDIS better than the Doctor himself... they lived a whole life as nobody really could with the Doctor and that's why in Silence in the Library she seems so convinced about the trust the Doctor put in her. It isn't because of her story with 11, it's because her story with 12. Remember also that potentially this period could last that forever, because with the TARDIS they can go and back when they want (like Clara in her "TARDIS"). Only the Doctor knew when was time to go and after so many years together, she finally accepted her fate and went to the Library. I really would like to have more 12 and River, they had an amazing chemestry.

I never felt like she was isolating a specific incarnation of the Doctor insofar as the general concept of the Doctor she had shared experience with. River had been married to the Doctor for most of her life. So it was obviously surreal to interact with a version of him that straight up doesn't recognize her. Although also, yeah ... after 24 years on that one planet, the River of "Silence in the Library" most likely primarily envisioned Peter Capaldi as the Doctor even though her formative years and the vast majority of her adventures were in the Matt Smith era

I have actually done that when I was sick and in bed for a couple days. In my opinion it holds up very well with the exception of 5x12. I can rationalize River's reaction to seeing Rory for the "first time" as her acting for his benefit, but her behavior when she's alone in Amy's house in that episode doesn't make much sense after learning in 6x08 that she spent a ton of time there as a kid. Those couple scenes aside, her timeline is incredible to watch.

Nobody ever realises that Nardole was from a show called Little Britain that was narrated by Tom Baker and was very popular at the time. He is quite well known in the UK and abroad.

This is my favorite Christmas special but impossible to show to newcomers! It's amazing how well the River storyline was concluded. Watching Silence in the Library right after this is so great; you see so many callbacks in the script. The first time you watch Silence in the Library, you're seeing it from the Doctor's perspective. The second time, it's from River's. You the viewer see this super young Doctor and you have so much knowledge about his future life.

First -- That whole scene of River & Twelve entering the Tardis: it's almost like Peter Capaldi is playing the Fourth Doctor. I could easily see Tom Baker doing the scene. Second -- I realize technically this is the last River Song story from the viewers' perspective. But with a Tardis and a 24-year night, who's to say that the Doctor and River couldn't run off and have adventures, then return a second later? Her 24 years might be more like 48 that way. Big Finish, take note. The only complaint I have with the special is that we couldn't have more River and Twelve episodes. Their chemistry was amazing.

Aaron got a bit mixed up. The thing with Byzantium was just after Wedding of River Song when Amy thought 11 was dead. River says she just climbed out of the Byzantium to Amy so Amy knew when in the timeline she was. What was mentioned in this episode was the waiter reading River's diary and saying she just been at Manhattan, aka when Amy and Rory left 11.

I struggled to enjoy seasons 5-7 with so many loose ends esp Rivers last date not shown. But Heaven, Hell and especially this - I felt like S Moffat gifted me everything I desperately wanted and more, I forgave Steven and this era became my favourite of all time. Love the Twelfth Doctor

YESS! Commenting here before I even watch the video but I know it's going to be good! This is one of the best specials in my opinion. I hope they still some how manage to bring her back in the future one way or another since she was such a great character! I hope they reliase when watching that it's all come full circle. It would be amazing if they watched the Silence in the Library two parter again having knowing what they do now.

I loved this episode. It was a huge payoff to finally see the singing towers after watching River's first episode years earlier. I remember as a little kid watching "Silence in the Library" for the first time asking my older sister if we would ever get an episode where we saw River and the Doctor at the singing towers. She said "no" but then I got to laugh at her when this finally aired.

Greg Davies is a great stand up comedian, comedy actor and writer. He shines on UK panel shows like Would I Lie To You. He tells a great story. He is also the Taskmaster on the show of the same name which is worth checking out if you can find it. His stand up show “You Magnificent Beast” is brilliant - it’s on Netflix I think.

Lol. '8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown', 'QI', 'The Inbetweeners'. Where do these Americans watch these standard British shows? What channel? I know it's a smaller world nowadays...streaming etc., but I find it funny hearing them talk about quintessentially British stuff that I grew up with.
