Truly a beautiful moment on many levels. Bobby is a prodigal child of Earth who finally made it home. Think about this Bobbie is of Samoan heritage and has never seen an actual ocean in her life. If memory serves me right that was the first thing she wanted to sea.

But I think it is more than that and it’s cultural.

@@technopirate304 Idk about the pilgrimage thing it just seems out of character for Series Bobby ( haven't read the books yet) like she doesn't seem that emotional and the cutural background of her family isn't mentioned at all. The significance of the ocean is mentioned by other martians in the show so I'd assume it's more of a martian cultural thing (as in they can build domes and 'make' the skye and plants. probably lakes and all but despite all their efforts having an ocean on mars is still impossible and will be for generations, also it being the cradle of life an all.) than Bobbies personal journey but idk.

20:50 That. Mao needs a patron. He first reaches out to an Earther official, Errinwright. When he realizes that Chrisjen is on to them, they fall out. He tells Errinwright that he will be forced to pursue other options. After the Eros incident, Mao becomes a wanted man on Earth which greatly diminishes those options. Midway through the peace-talks on Earth, Bobbie lets it slip that the marines on Ganymede were killed by a man that wasn't wearing a vac suit, which Mars then tries to supress. "Sergeant, do as you were instructed". 1 man without a vac-suit annihilating a bunch of marines = weaponized protomolecule. That's when Errinwright suspects that Mars might be using peace as a distraction and that Mao must have reached out to them.
@thontor
@thontor 3 жыл бұрын
Rick, it's not that complicated. Mao is doing stuff with the protomolecule and was backed by Errinwright. Because of that Errinwright knew about Project Caliban. Mao and Errinwright broke up so Mao went to find a new backer and Mars was more than willing to back him for access to this new weapon. Errinwright deduced through what Bobbie said that what she was talking about was Project Caliban which he already knew about since he used to work with Mao. With the realization that Mars had to have also known and therefore Mars was now backing Mao and this new weapon he felt the need to come clean to Avasarala.
@marcc1830
@marcc1830 3 жыл бұрын
Errinwright pretty much funded the development of Project Caliban but by the time he can deliver a prototype, he had a falling out with Mao. And somehow a Martian marine describe encountering a prototype on Ganymede. Not too hard for Errinwright to put 2 and 2 together.
@sparrowlt

Mao was allready in contact with someone in MCR military before falling out with Errinwright .. he basically was securing funding and support for his research ..if one side failed him he would had the other.. if no one failed him he would go with whoever would be more convenient.. if there would be someone in the Belt able to afford/support him he probably would had gone with a third option too..
@Adobomonster
@Adobomonster 3 жыл бұрын
Errinwright knows all of Mao's projects because he was his patron before the Eros incident. Remember that Mao and Errinwright had a falling out after. Once he realises that these projects are being tested without his knowledge, then it must only mean one thing - that Mao has a new patron. Someone who wants the Ganymede incident (protomolecule weapons test) to be swept under the rug, so much so that they're willing to accept responsibility and pay for the damages.
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 3 жыл бұрын
Mao could give a flying fuck about having a "patron". Mao has been trying to start a war between Earth and Mars since s1.e1 so he can sell his alien tech to the highest bidder. He's had ties to people inside both governments all along so they could submit their bids to him. Errinwright's second or two of shock at hearing Roberta's testimony is his reaction to hearing evidence that might cause someone to look more closely at the weapon test. It was videotaped by drones, and I'm sure Errinwright viewed a copy of it. Earth's official policy was peace, not war, and Errinwright's support for conquest of Mars would have been considered treason.

Heart of the Tempest a protomolecule spaceship created by Rogue Martian will show up in Season 6 of the Expanse. The ship Heart of the Tempest is built at the massive ancient shipyards in orbit around the planet Laconia, the Tempest was one of three total Magnetar-class vessels in service. The Tempest utilized numerous technologies acquired from the long-dead protomolecule creators, including a powerful magnetic beam cannon and a self-repairing hull. We got to see this ancient shipyard in the ending of The Expanse Season 5. Laconia is a planet in the system with the same name. Following the reactivation of the Ring network, the planet was settled by a rogue element of the Martian Congressional Republic Navy, effectively establishing a functioning government the Laconian Empire in the absence of direction from any human power. Never thought about the "Simple Complex System" situation like the opposite of "Life finds a way" but it fits strangely well. On Earth there's enough "life" for something unexpected to occur to combat a life challenge (e.x. inability to procreate) while out in space there's not enough "life" to deal with a life challenge (e.x. key part of ecosystem fails).
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps

It's like it's a very complex system but because it's only one each subsystem only has so many paths to choose from so if a high-priority one is compensating long enough low-priority ones start to deteriorate to the point that even removing what taxed the whole system it's too late, more and more subsystems will simply fail.

Mao was working on the same project for both sides without either side knowing. Errinwright was visibly startled when Bobbie mentioned the man without a vac suit because he already knew about the "Caliban Project" that Mao had been developing for Earth. But he suddenly realized in that moment that Mao had been working on the same thing for Mars. It might have begun when Mao threatened to find another patron, or Mao may have been working both sides all along. But he also realized in that moment that Mao was at the point of actually receiving a working copy of the Caliban project. Ultimately, Errinwright is "Earth First," so he was forced to confide in Avasarala so that they could find a way to stop the Martian salient. There is no reason Mars would cover up a superweapon that wasn't theirs. They would presume it had been an Earth test and be protesting the Ganymede incident as an attack, not covering it up and accepting fault. "All" of the Martian government is not aware of the Caliban Project, any more than "all" of the US government was aware of the Manhattan Project. But the Manhattan Project was a "US government" project, just as Caliban is a "Martian government" project. If the Martian officials really had no clue about it, her superiors would have intensely interrogated Bobbie about exactly what wiped out both a UN Marine squad and a top-notch Martian Marine squad. What we saw, however, was that every time Bobbie began to talk about a "thing," her own superiors cut her off. Food produced by Ganymede was primarily for Belters. Belters are the primary group that will suffer from the loss of Ganymede. You don't see either Mars or Earth shedding any tears over it.

A closed station works like an aquarium The purification system is relativelly simple but its setting must be precisely done If not, you can have a subtle change in the water PH level, which would cause algae to grow, those algae would jam the filters then the pump and so on And when you have reach the point of no return (the cascade) you can't do anything to fix it. All you can do is pick the fishj up, emptying the tank and restart from scratch Except, with a station on a planet/moon without breathable atmosphere, you can't take the people out that easy

Aaron (sp?) has figured out the key to the show, really. The people to root for, in this series, are those able to look past the perceptions of others -- the stereotypes and the bigotry -- taught to them, and see other people as the complex, varied individuals, no matter where they're from. That individuality, that lack of desire to conform to others simplistic perceptions of us, is a fundamental part of our humanity, regardless of where we're from. All science fiction comments on the events of the day, and those made by The Expanse have particular relevance, because the authors wrote all the books in the past decade. That willingness to hold a mirror up to reality, and a take frank look at how technology could make our world better or worse, is what makes science fiction an inherently subversive form of literature. :) As for Project Caliban, the name of the second book in the series is, Caliban's War. Caliban is the half-human monster under the control of the exiled mage, Prospero, in William Shakespeare's, The Tempest. So, we had Cervantes, last season, and now Shakespeare, in this one. Oh, and how do you think the OPA found out about what went on, at Phoebe? ProtoGen is a subsidiary of Mao's main company, working with Mars on that moon's research station. It was *Julie* who found out something big had happened there, but didn't know what. Julie took the information to Anderson Dawes, and he authorized what everybody expected would be a routine pirate raid on a cargo vessel full of scientists and regular spacers. Unfortunately, what they thought would be a standard cargo spacecraft turned out to be the Anubis, manned by a bunch of Mao's hired guns who'd had their empathy magnetically removed. A lot of your questions about Errinwright, and what he knew, will get answered in the next couple of episodes. Just remember, Jules-PIerre Mao has the same loyalty to any one "side" as any other weapons dealer. :) Earth doesn't need to grow food to feed its people, and Mars probably is agriculturally self-sufficient, also. Most of the food on Ganymede is grown to feed Belters and the Earthers and Martians who work in space, and it's grown by Belters. However, the facilities are owned by Earth and Mars corporations, and not by the Belters who grow the food and buy it.

Here is my interpretation: Mao is a weapons contractor. And he works with both Earth and Mars on various contracts. The PM, when his people discovered it on Phoebe station (which I think was a Mao controlled research outpost), Mao struck a deal with Errinwright for funding of his research into the PM as weapons potential. Errinwright definitely knew about the plans for Eros despite his protestations, and clearly had some knowledge of the Caliban project. That project had yielded a promising hybrid that is multi-phased. Errinwright wasn’t willing to deal with his Avasarala problem so Mao then took the Caliban project to Mars, who wanted a demo of it against UN troops and against Martian Marines. My guess is they didn’t expect their marines to get wiped out.

No one purposely changed anything with the environment in Ganymede, be it the water or good bacteria. The moon's natural state was barren and does not support life. The "change" was years ago when they built a space station there. And as a man made system, it lack the complexity of nature. Once you have a large enough disasters it will break enough things that failure cascades and kill you. Another instance this show made me appreciate what we got on earth.

To put it simply: *Protogen* is the primary company that Mars approach when Protomolecule on Phoebe. From that point on, tracking who has what is pointless. *Because as the 'project' grew, it starts to involve a wide range on subsidiaries, sub-agencies, contractors, from Earth, Mars and anyone with power in the system.* And betrayal started happening all over the place. When Protogen fell, everyone with their own part of the pie no matter big or small, went their own separate way with their own parts. Somewhere down the line there are groups that come together to share/betrayal their parts. etc. There are way too many sub-groups. Think in terms of Table-top RPG, it's up to the GM to make up whatever group they want. *Saying Earth or Mars is involve is like saying someone in a particular government is involve. It's too large a scope to cover.*

I think the horizon issue for Martians on Earth has less to do with them living inside domes, and more to do with the difference in the planets. Martians go outside the domes in vac suits. They need to build more infrastructure if they want to grow and eventually terraform the planet. And as we saw with Bobbie's squad, vac suit training exercises take place for military personnel. Being in a suit isn't going to change the way you see the horizon. And even the people inside of buildings are going to look out of windows and see the horizon. The real problem for Martians is Earth is a much larger planet than Mars, the surface is going to curve away much more gradually, making the horizon appear further away. On Earth, if you are 5 ft. 7 in. tall, standing at sea level looking out across the water, the horizon is about 4.7 km away. Someone of the same height standing on a mostly flat portion of the Martian surface is going to see the horizon at about 3.4 km away. If you spend your entire life only ever seeing the Martian horizon, Earth's horizon being that much farther away is probably going to disorient you a bit. Combine it with the higher gravity that your body is not used to and you can see why the Martians feel sick on Earth. Though I would expect the personnel that live and work in space shouldn't suffer from it as much.
