Harri, The Spinners started out in Detroit in the '60s but went the whole decade there without success or fame. But circa 1970 they moved to Philadelphia, which had taken over from Motown as the new capitol of Soul/R&B, and flourished there. That music scene in Philadelphia was known by a few different names: The Philly Sound, Philly Soul, Philly Beat, and even T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia). It was there in the City of Brotherly Love that The Spinners found stardom, pumping out hit after hit after hit, including this one! Next from The Spinners, please react to, "I'll Be Around", using the same Soul Train video. (They're wearing the same outfits.)

The Spinners had minor hits in the 60s, such as: 1961- That's What Girls Are Made For 1965 - I'll Always Love You 1966 - Truly Yours Their first (and only hit) "It's A Shame" was in 1970, produced and written by Stevie Wonder (who also played some of the instruments). The lead singer on this song was G.C. Cameron, who originally recorded "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday" for the 1975 movie "Cooley High". That song was covered by Boyz II Men in the 90s. After "It's A Shame" faded into the sunset, The Spinners never had another hit record at Motown, and was all but forgotten until 1972, when they left Motown and went to Atlantic Records, and thus the hits started rolling back to back, produced by the great Thom Bell, who also was a hit maker for The Stylistics, The Delfonics and The Intruders, and New York City. The Spinners never won a Grammy for any of their singles or albums. The four core members, Bobbie Smith, Phillipe Wynne, Billy Henderson and Pervis Jackson passed away, so the last surviving member is Henry Fambrough. John Edwards replaced Phillipe Wynne in 1977 when Wynne left the group to go solo. Going into the 80s with John Edwards leading the group, they had minor hits but not with the fervor of the 70s. Also, they were no longer guided by Thom Bell; instead Michael Zagler produced some of their 80s records such as Working My Way Back To You (their cover of the Four Seasons' song), Cupid (cover of Sam Cooke's record), Heaven On Earth (So Fine), Funny How Time Slips Away, I Just Want To Fall In Love, Right or Wrong, Magic In The Moonlight, and a few others. The Spinners have newer members and still perform to this day, singing their hit songs.

Could it be ? Yes I have long ago fallen in 💘 with this tremendous song and performances on SOUL TRAIN. This song soars and flora like a beautiful butterfly. It is timeless and yet preserved in amber for all time. Like all great songs performed well it blazed across the sky. It flies low and climbs high. It floats in just the right directions and while the great best continues the supreme keyboards takes us to a Place far off in the sky. I love the song and the great group that performs it with gusto, balance, harmony and wonderful choreography. I am at a loss for words because I am so genuinely moved by the combination. It always chased away the blues. It is sheerMAGIC. I think t is one of the all time transformative songs in popular music. PERFECT.

The Spinners version is, however, the original and the definitive! One of the most romantic tunes of the late soul/early disco era, when disco was romantic and soulful -- mellifluous, sweet, heartwarming, ROMANTIC -- nobody falls in love anymore, not like this! (Apologies, the Grant/Graham just isn't in the same league as the original...it just isn't). Some songs are sung as "performances" of the band/singer. That's nice. But others are genuine MASTERPIECES, irreplaceable, where every element is at maximum expression. In other words, the Spinners version captures the "moment of realization that one is falling in love with someone most special", in formal terms known in art as "the Myronic Moment" (see the sculpture "The Discus Thrower", by Myron, an ancient Greek artist), the moment that captures the most profound essence of the piece, the moment before the climax, the moment of no going back. The Spinners achieved the latter several times in their songs: Check out "It's A Shame", "I'll Be Around", "Working my Way back to you". God bless!

These guys I knew simply as the Spinners. Googled them and learned, they were known as the Detroit Spinners or the Motown Spinners in the UK to avoid confusion with a British folk group called the Spinners. Listened to the six-and-a-half-minute maxi-single by David Grant & Jaki Graham (1985), and it is beautiful! I’ve always liked the Spinners’ version (1972), and so now I have two versions to enjoy. Another good popular song from 1972 is “Alone Again (Naturally)” by Gilbert O’Sullivan.

Excellent request, and you are right Harri, absolutely blissful. Detroit/Motown is one of America’s BEST creations. It is so sad that there truly is not music like this today; the young generation today (school age) is at such a disadvantage; too much manufactured, negative, morally corrupt music; it has an impact on the psyche and it shows.
