I was ski instructing and mountaineering in Germany when I first saw the movie.... I was totally blown away. I’m in my sixty’s now and feel just the same way... Feels like yesterday.

I decided when I turned 40 that I would give myself whatever I wanted for my birthday. I moved to the French Alps and rode the grand cols of Tour de France history. The day of my 40th birthday was special. I drove with some friends to Chamonix, and we had Pol Roger Grand Cru on top of the Aiguille du Midi. It was this video clip that put the idea in my head when I was 18. As the tram got close to the entry station, I was shouting in my head "That's it! Plake's couloir!"

Plake is a role model for extreme skiing. remember watching this scene 20 times growing up. i got sponsored out in lake louise and made a career out of it for a few years. all thanks to Plake raising the bar of what seemed impossible.

Just went to this spot at Grand Montets last week. Scoped this line and it is even sketchier now that snow levels have receded due to climate change or whatever. Rocks everywhere. Seriously doubting anyone will ever hit it again.
@extreme_ryan_delena6 жыл бұрын
Legally Pumped dude it’s probably just a bad snow year. Some years are shallow some years are deep. Doesn’t mean it’ll never be skiable again
@markosterman497411 ай бұрын
@@extreme_ryan_delenaNo, it’s not just a matter of a bad snow year. Since this greatest of all ski movies was filmed, the glaciers and neve in the Chamonix massif have diminished dramatically. The absolute best example of this is the Mer de Glace glacier which has retreated dramatically, to the point where the Montenvers gondola which brings you from the base of the glacier to the train station has in the past forty years or so required the construction of a staircase further down from the bottom of the gondola to the ever receding surface of the glacier. Every few years they have added more steps as the glacier keeps dropping and they have now more than five hundred steps, if I understand correctly. More than a couple of hundred feet! And the couloir skied from the glacier tunnel exit at the Aiguille du Midi probably hasn’t been skied in decades, because it’s just rocks. Climate change is real and it’s ruining skiing!

Loving all the comments . We remember when xtreme was just skiing new harder slopes. This started the X - Games . My friends used to make snowboards when you couldn't buy them . Ski Areas banned them and the Punk attitude / Beastie bOys promoted the New. Come a lomg way all the way to the Oylmpics big air half pie border cross Snow boarding saved skiing. Now we are all riders on the snow.

Today's equipment is 25 years newer also, if you could land any jump back then into 3' + powder on twigs 210cm long you were a stud, make know bones about Glen's time was almost up just a few weeks ago in Tibet...

I remember watching the bit just before this. The guide, who was a Kiwi I think, was trying to act all cool. "The Poubelle, garbage chute, maybe we ski that later" and Scott says he wants to try it...."Is that OK Murray?" ...."Ehh, sure, sure" and you can see from his face he's wondering, who the fuck are these nutters?
