Welcome to Modern Homestead Alaska. We are located in South Central Alaska near the town of Wasilla. Living in Alaska and building our dream of “modern Homesteading” through the wilds of winter and the long summer days. We started building our Modern Homestead in 2021. We have since completed the upper levels of our home. Built a 16x16 foot chicken coop that dreams are made of. Our chicken ladies live in luxury as they view the beautiful lake from large windows inside the beautiful coop. We raise our own poultry, hunt for our food. We are avid fisherman And woman. We also built an amazing and beautiful wood shed. We have great big garden planes for the future. Join us as we dream big dreams and live everyday working hard to accomplish them.

You are one of my favourite alaskan channels. You are so prepared but I watch another channel of a young couple just starting out and they are just so not prepared. This will be their 1st winter in Alaska. I really hope they watch your work. I'm in the UK so when we get snow here the whole country grinds to a halt . We only ever get 2or3inches. Absolutely nothing to what you have and it only ever lasts for a few days. Wishing you a very happy blessed thanksgiving. I hope you are going to share with us! Love you and stay safe

Hi Jessica, Aaron and sweet family! Aaron is such a hard working man and you are a hard working woman Jessica. The longest time I was without power was 5 days. You do have to prepare for what might happen. I always made sure my laundry and house was clean. Food that would be easy to heat up on my cooktop. Back in February 1998 in Northern NY, we had a major ice storm that took out electricity from South of Watertown on up into Ontario and Montreal Canada. That was on a Wednesday, and on Saturday, we received 18 inches of lake effect snow. We lost power for almost 4 weeks. We had wood heat and a spring way up on the hill that siphoned downhill even though we had no electricity. We had a frost free hydrant next to the garage, so our neighbors came and filled water jugs. The Fire Dept went out on snowmobiles to check on everyone. Goes to show, people come together when things go bad!

Thanks for sharing and the great reminder to stay prepared!! Here in Texas, we have tornadoes and ice mostly for us to prepare for in the spring, fall & winter... summer is the heat. Last February we had the Polar Vortex whch Texans are NOT prepared for- however we had spent the previous 4 months preparing for emergencies- so we had a Woodburner and other ways to heat food [and i can loads of food, so we ate well! Neighbors ate with us too] April we were hit by a tornado, and lost power for 4 days... again we had prepared, so we did good. Each time we see where we are lacking and then attempt to address that area as we can with our finances... sometimes it's a slo go, however we are continuing to work towards being self sufficent and helping others. I appreciate you real videos... prayers up ❤

When we were in NY and a winter storm was coming, people flocked the stores and not really clear the shelves, just get eggs,milk,bread,water, and meat. When a blizzard warning was in effect, forget it. A lot of foods not all are wiped out. People lined gas stations, filled propane tanks, and banks. We had blizzards before all the technology set in. Had to have my son’s school work all set in case the worst case scenario set in. Have a great Thanksgiving

Our power was only out for an hour yesterday afternoon. When I built our house I put in a sub panel with its own transfer switch to power lights, refrigerator, freezer and oil heaters. I can run our Honda 2000 over night on less than a gallon of gas doing this. We have a whole house transfer switch and a remote start generator when we need to run the pump and other high loads This is a gas hog so we don’t run it except for this. 25% of the Mat Su was without power last night. I see you live near the big tower. We see the top two lights of that from 10 miles away.
@ravenlaughs9757
@ravenlaughs9757 11 ай бұрын
We have a whole house transfer switch too. Next to a Generac its the best. To extend the generator we keep ours without oil or fuel so we fill them prior to putting outside, pain in the back but its how we do it.

When we lived in the woods in Maine and a Nor'easter was predicted, we would do all of these same things (minus the animal preparation as we didn't have any besides the cat) To this day I still always fill up 5 gallon buckets when I hear about a snowstorm, if nothing else we need them to flush toilets because the well pump won't work without power. When we loose power here in the winter and bad storms we fill up our bathtubs for water for flushing toilets , washing up and the animals. We always have a well so when the power goes so does the water . The longest our power was out was for 21 hours so we charged phones in the vehicles and stuff like that. We have a small generator. But we need to invest in a bigger one for sure

We live on the Mexican/Texas border by the Gulf and it rare for real cold weather, but understand the wind. We have lucked out for the last couple years on hurricane season, but wind storms we get a lot of.

Sounds like you make about the same preparations as we make for a hurricane on the gulf coast. The difference is the temperature. We make sure we have enough drinking water for people and pets. We make sure all the clothes are washed and dried and put away. We make sure we have plenty of food on hand because all stores will be closed as power could be out for several days up to several weeks. We fill up the bathtubs with water so that we have enough to flush toilets. We board up windows and doors to prevent flying debris from breaking glass. We fill all the vehicles up with gasoline as well as any generators and gas cans. We store all outside furniture and objects or tie them down so they won't get blown away or worse blown onto neighbor's properties where they can cause damage. etc. etc. It's a lot of work and you can't wait until the last minute as invariably some people do.

It did I didn’t go out in it. Our daughter had to come home. It’s hard to record without going out in the danger of it. It had no snow with it just wind. So it’s just miserable. Our son’s school lost power and he had to come home too. And the neighborhood near the school had thousands without power.
