I don't understand this stigma that black people don't fit in if they enjoy music outside of afrobeats & hiphop Without african Americans inventing blues I'm not sure rock music will exist today... I'm east african and I've listened to indie/alt rock since I was 10 or so, it's probably because I was exposed to alot of music derivative of rock on TV since I'm British... And now I'm 25 years old I listen to literally anything these days; Afrobeats, jazz, bossanova, salsa, ska,RnB, contemporary hiphop, dancehall, jungle, dnb, tech house, trance & occasionally classical if the piece stands out to me. I just follow & trust my ear, even using "genres" to describe my musical taste & sensibilities feels trivial to me

You know what's weird. On the U.S. release of the Silent Alarm CD that I bought in 2005 when it was still new, this song is on it. It quickly became my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite songs of the era, just an absolute anthem. I only just found out the other day that it's not on the UK version of the album! And that it's not even available to stream now! Utter insanity! The album absolutely feels incomplete without it. Just really feel for the newer fans who don't know this song and don't know what it does to elevate that album.

The early 2000s we're just something else. I'm not just speaking because of nostalgia, it is that the air had a fragrance, the world sounded different.....from car engines to the slangs and language people used, to the sound of hustling leaves in the parks, to the cell phones. Everything was good back then.

Met guitarist Russel Lissack after the gig who was a nice guy and down to earth. Signed my ticket. Some mad random bands came out of the UK in the mid 2000's...even though my era was the late 80's & 90's the mid 2000's was great for music. Some bad stuff but plenty of good also.

@@kubrickking5101 no band not even bloc party themselves will come close to producing indie rock gems similar to the silent alarm / weekend era. the best word to describe their music this era is exuberance. i like the strokes and am but man i still think bloc party put themselves over the moon with an unmatched distinctiveness making music that surrounds you in this white energy that perfectly encapsulates what being young in the modern era is like. imo the band took the genre really way far, more so than their pioneering peers. i dont really hate the indie rock that came after their prime but most of it has slowed down and follows the mac demarco tropical trend which isnt really bad per se at least to me but with each listen of the same sounding stuff your ears grow numb to otherwise uninteresting cookie cutter tracks that are afraid to move from "deep lyrics" and bassy rhythmic rhythms (i mean lots of basslines in pop today arent melodic; bloc party isnt the anthesis but im just making the point of characterizing how much of IR is redundant nowadays) and towards frantic soundscapes of fast tempos - and i dont mean but not also criticism a la vampire weekend just any which way the music goes: bloc party paints pictures with their music and puts me in a specific mood whenever i listen to a specific track of theirs. the understanding between the connection of music and words and the purposeful display of technical proficiency and comping is why i enjoy BP more so than almost any other rock band today.

Short story: I used to get high and play Guitar Hero with one of my homies. There was a song by Bloc Party, which I dug, so I went and downloaded the whole discography on a torrent (yes, I was a baller). I had an old "scrolly wheel" I-pod at the time, which held 20 gigs of music. I remember the day: fucking around on I-tunes, trying to find new music I wanted to listen to out of my giant music collection I illegally downloaded from torrents (yes, I was, and still am a baller). I saw Bloc Party and I was like "why not?" I picked the "Tulips EP" because my I-pod was almost full of music already, and it was only two songs long, and I hadn't really listened to any Bloc Party other hearing their song on Guitar Hero... One day (while on one of my many random adventure-journeys) I was playing my I-pod on shuffle, and the Tulips EP popped up, and I was like "wow, that was jammy af", so I listened to it on repeat for like 3 days straight. Then I was like "this band is the shit!", so I went and put a bunch more Bloc Party on my I-pod. Little did I know it would become the soundtrack to my life for the next 3 years. Some really "deep, reflective" times for me. Kind of like "years of self-discovery". One line in particular changed the whole course of my life...: "If I could do it again, Id climb more trees, Id pick and Id eat, more wild, blackberries..." Actually part of why I look like what I look like today (I used to be very clean cut, believe it or not). Just some deep, esoteric shit going on in my head during those times, and these songs were the perfect soundtrack for that. I'm telling you, soundtrack to my life... My friends at the time had different tastes in music, so It was kind of my "personal soundtrack" for when Id venture "to and fro their house", a good 5 miles away, walking, in the middle of the night, through various trails, forests, and shortcuts, just kind of "wandering", with only the moonlight to guide me, and Bloc Party in my ears... Kind of crazy, but also crazy awesome... Just, "those experiences" are forever engraved in who I am. Its like Bloc Party and I now have a "soul connection", and Its all because I put the silly little "Tulips EP" on my I-pod. Crazy. Those were legendary times, a lot of which "made me who I am", which, surely, can and does find its way into the world (in one way or another...) Super awesome... I doubt anybody would have anticipated such awesomeness coming out of music, but, it surely did. I will be forever grateful. Thank you Bloc Party... You are legendary in your own right. I just hope that anybody that comes after us can find similar experiences, maybe by the hands of your music. I suppose we can only hope... Until then...

Some of their new stuff is good to listen to, others not so, but they're taking a new directions, which on the one hand is cool, but on the other is a little annoying as their early stuff is clearly fucking awesome.
