This is why actual fight experience is essential: Moore didn't try to "outspeed" Bruce, he OUTREAD his movements, something that many martial artists who only rely on conditioning and repetition drills have no way of learning. Also, respect to Mr Moore, who competed back when Karate tournaments were closer to what they should be, instead of the games of tag they are today.

Does anyone actually SEE what is happening during the replay's? I've only been active in MA Training since 1976, but I can see what is going on here. Should I explain, or would all of you like to figure it out for yourselves? IT'S like this: During the replay of each repetition of the strike, regardless whether it was directed / intended to go to the head or the chest, FALLS impressively short of the target. It's that simple. IF you Look (Carefully), You will See. IF you Seek (Ernestly), You will Find. I've see this demo series of videos over the last 50 years and come to several conclusions. The pertinent conclusion here is that the Hype of the event affected Vic more than he expected and more than was necessary. Even with a shuffle / slide step, making up four steps (as stated in the vid) in one movement is somewhat difficult; The fact is (noted by the video evidence), none of Bruces back-fist strikes were intended to "hit" a target - it was just for show, a show of one individuals speed in "Action" mode vs. another individuals speed in the "Reaction" mode. This is an age-old question: Which is faster, Action or Reaction? The main point is that Bruce only comes to within an inch or two, twice. This is when Vic "touched" Bruces hand as it was within the space to "touch and defend." All the rest of the repetitions of Bruces back-fist strikes are concluding their motion outside of TWO (2) FEET away from Vic's head. Vic Moore was a really good champion Karate Fighter, I wonder if James Williams and he fought in the day? Bruce Lee was a natural Martial Artist (just like Vic) who decided to try to make money performing in movies. It is a good story none the less and both were very good Artists.
@donoberloh3 жыл бұрын
I caught that one too. Bruce’s strikes are pulled way before even coming close to Vics face. He also was not Four “steps “back unless they are baby steps. His so called 1-inch punch also starts over a hands length away. Push someone and they they fall back. Hit someone properly they should crumble up or collapse. Reaction is always a step behind the attack. It can’t help it because to react is to not do anything until the attack is already half way to the target. Try dropping a dollar bill straight down through someone’s open thumb and point finger, and ask them to grab the dollar before it goes through their fingers. If the bill is straight and flat they always fail to grasp it unless they anticipate the drop, which negates the experiment.
@shihanUKS3 жыл бұрын
This valid articulation should be full of replies but it doesn't fit the mythology people were wired to believe. There is A LOT of context surrounding this event that happened the night before that shaped Vic's perception, the outcome, and later everyone elses. It wasn't even Vic's idea to go up there. Vic visited our school and my instructor's home many times. Both of them were USKA and my instructor was present at this event. The fly on the wall heard it all.
@MrRickyw013 жыл бұрын
I saw the same thing. The 'strike' was not a strike! Showmanship is a talent. Bruce Lee had it. MMA today is about as real as it can get. To deliver a power strike requires a different muscle group and body positioning. I remember the boxing media commentary on Cassius Clay 'phantom' knockout punch of Sonny Liston. I saw the punch. Then reviewed the video in slow motion. At the time Clay(Ali) was in his prime. He was super fast. The punch caused Liston's forehead skin to ripple from the punch. The knockout occurred because Liston's brain bounced very fast within his skull, a newtonian force=mass times acceleration situation. As Ali aged, speed decreased, hence fewer knockouts. But, as we know today, boxing is not the same as 'fighting'. Your analysis is dead on.
@askfrank98533 жыл бұрын
This is the question? Was Bruce's speed punching powerful enough to knock out his opponent? I don't think so. Well obviously it would depend on who his opponent is. But in general I don't think compared to today's MMA fighters that Bruce would rank under the first 5.

The problem with Bruce Lee's punching demonstrations is that the other person's hands are down to their sides and are expected to bring up their hands in time to block Bruce Lee's punches which is almost impossible even if the person throwing the punches is much slower than Bruce. Plus nobody fights that way. What would have been real is that the person is already in a fighting stance and moving as in a fight and Bruce Lee trying to touch that person's chest or head before that person can block it or move out of the punch's way. This would have been refective of real fights and how fast Bruce really was.

It did not take over 50 years. This was the story since the day it happened. Lee's promoters edited the video to control the narrative that Lee was better than these worldwide champions. Moore's interview is pretty clear on these events. He was interviewed for a book by Black Belt Magazine in 1993 so this info is credible not just by Moore who IT HAPPENED TO but others who were there as well.

Clearly Vic Moore surprised Bruce Lee with his ability to block his punches. I'd wager that was the first time it had ever happened. The thing to consider between the first 4 where Vic was able to block, and the last 2, where he fanned, is that he knew when and where the first 4 punches were going. Vic had the ability to sit back and prepare himself for a hand strike to the chest. Vic obviously shoed great speed and represented himself very well by blocking them. How often does your opponent not just telegraph, but outright tell you what to expect? For the last 2, Vic was in a real world scenario, he wasn't warned when or where, it was up to him to react and in that situation it wasn't fast enough.
@MartialMadness3 жыл бұрын
Vic Moore never denied missing Bruce's last 2 swings. He was dismissed as the first 4 attempts never happened. The thing to consider is Moore did block the first few like he testified all those years ago. The last 2 were not real world because he was standing there with his hands down. Also Lee was feet away from target so there was nothing to block. People still try to discredit Moore but that ship has passed. All those stories about Lee and this never was brought up. They conveniently left it out and edited the footage and removed the audio of the entire event.

Wow! I must admit, Master Victor Moore definitely got skills from what I have observed here. For anyone to block 4 out of 6 punches from Master Bruce Lee is an accomplishment. However, I feel that both men are extremely great at what they do. I give credit to both Masters. What an incredible display here... and this is coming from a diehard Bruce Lee fan. Peace. 💖💖 #LegendaryGreatness

I’m a Lee fan, but an exhibition doesn’t cut it. Ok, true that tournament fighting isn’t quite the real thing, but if Lee was that good he could have made the adjustment and actually fought the best. Because he never did, we’ll never know how good he really was.

Grandmaster Vic Moore's account from DECADES ago, lines up with new angle footage. 1. @ 2:50 and @ 4:35 - He blocked several strikes to the chest. Specifically a Palm Heel Block being the 1st of 4. 2. @ 4:44 - Bruce Lee being surprised/embarrassed. 3. @ 4:32 - 5:16 The count of 4 strikes Bruce attempts from spectator Point of View. 4. @ 5:10 - Bruce patting him on his right arm admitting how fast Vic Moore was. 5. @ 5:19 - The Stadium Angle (the really clean color footage released a couple years ago), makes an EDIT removing Vic Moore's first 4 blocks. It then cuts to the profile view of Lee doing only two head strikes from 2 feet away. It is this footage that was referenced as proof of Moore not being able to block Lee. Which we see now was never the case. 6. @ 5:25 - Vic Moore telling Lee the speed drill was to block punches to chest, not the head. And them laughing before concluding the demo.

Let's b clear BOTH men r Great @ what they do! I bleve Master Vic was telling tha truth on tha account but I think we dramatize tha Speed thing 2 much! I can see tha chuckles n hate coming from tha Tournament fighters and Bruthas wanting 2 jump in n take a crack @ Bruce 😳! But remem Sen' Vic said @that time he was n his prime as we hav an idea of when Bruce was in his prime definitely not then (tha Wong Jack Man fight also) Bruce probably came 2tha Tournament cocky and tha whole xperience forward 3-4 yrs lead him 2 his unquenchable thirst 2b a Greater version of himself. While most MA's worked on upping their techniques Bruce worked on techniques AND his body structures, speed n power performance. Ya'll kno its documented he went way beyond tha norm (obsessed)! Steve Muhammad was there n agreed Master Vic did his thing but after seeing Bruce a few yrs later he mentioned Bruce was on anotha level! I think it was said Bruce copied n tweaked Master Steve's backhand cuz it was so fast! Let's also not 4get it wasn't Bruce's fault they (Hollyweird) threw him a few movie roles hell he was discriminated on 2! He opened tha door 4 MA's 2 seen on tha screen but Y'all kno they pick who they want n Who ALWAYS dies during tha flick! How many fighters back then wud honestly say they wanted their chance 2b on screen?? Anyway tha point is both Great MA's made their own personal contribution to their perspective arts so let's b glad we can see footage of what was n where MA's evolved...from tha Dojo's to film! Shout out 2 Sijo Bruce and living legend GM Vic Moore✌

Thanks for posting this. Victor Moore taught John Jelks who taught Ed Brown.and Emerson Williams wno taught me. They used to tell some interesting stories about Master Moore. They Brown and Williams .learned well how to read opponents and were very hard to hit. They came up during the transition from traditional sparring to point soarring so the hits were real... Man, you woke up some unfinished business in me. I miss the training.

It's refreshing to hear of Bruce having limitations instead of being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, which is all we usually hear (aside from those that insist that he was simply an actor that "acted" like a martial artist). It's hard for many people to take someone who is only described as superhuman seriously. In fact, I believe that's partially why there's so much push back against his status. This, along with the recounting of the less-than-picture-perfect Wong Jack Man fight, help paint a more realistic and believable depiction of Bruce Lee the person.

Amazing ! My first time hearing this from Moore's perspective. I'm 62 and we knew back then that Vic was the one man that could beat Bruce Lee in a one on one . Seeing this with him narrating exactly what's going on in the clips is hearing Mike Tyson talk about fighters faults and of how he takes advantage of them. Moore talking about eye and other movements and of HOW he learned them is LEGENDARY !!

The first thing I want to tell, for what Moore said, Bruce Lee doing the same thing too! OK, So even I believe on this, but when situation for real fight, the power will come with the attack punch too, yes you did bock it, just telling us his movement is not really that fast with what some people think of, let's try to think one more step, what will be heppen on your hand or head if you block his punch! Remember you are taking the power which is like heavy wight in boxing! Will you choose to block Tyson's punch or move away?
@MartialMadness4 жыл бұрын
In real fight Vic Moore would not be standing hands by side waiting to be hit. Remember he was a professional fighter. In ring and on the streets. The problem here is they edited footage and removed sound all these years to say Bruce could not be blocked by the best of American champions. This is false information. A other problem is the demo was for strikes to the chest only. Since Bruce Lee did not test or compete for the tournament he was not allowed to actually fight. That is why sparring gear with Ted Wong. The only reason he backed up and swung at air was to show it could not be blocked. If Bruce Lee was better than Moore they would have released the full footage and audio demonstration but they did not. So as long as we can see that yes Moore did block Lee at least a few times. That is the point of the video.

Just to address Mike Tyson. He threw mostly hooks or more circular pulled punches. These are more powerful than the pushed strikes that Lee threw, though not as fast, because of the different application of torque.

Lee said he would hit his chest, he did not. Then Lee tried to cheat amd still failed..

Bro stop trying so hard to defend Bruce, the point in this video is he lost in this game of speed. Receiving his punch raw is a whole different story 😂

Tricks are being played on the volunteers during these demos. Whoever moves first is going to have an advantage in a reaction contest. The person reacting will always be slightly behind the person who moves first.

Exactly, that is why Joe Lewis got out on his ass by Lee, he had no knowledge of body mechanics....... Vic Moore had knowledge from observation and common sense, he even knew to keep his knees bent to lower his center of gravity and root so Lee had no weak target to aim for then in defeat Lee aimed at his face when he said he was going to lunch his chest........ So he showed Bruce Lee is human and could be defeated by a man of similar knowledge and physical ability......
@MartialMadness3 жыл бұрын
You raise a good point. Lee didn't expect him to stand square up to him ready to anticipate Lee's punch. He was expecting the person at 1:27 who had a more predictable stance. One thing I like about this testimony is Moore admits how he got Lee and how Lee got him back. Skill, experience and unpredictability. Lessons learned and taught by both men that day.
@kimgysen103 жыл бұрын
I have to admit to this. It saddens me a bit but it shows that Bruce also lacked some real sparring experience with skilled fighters as he would have known. Now of course this was very early in his career, he developed a lot after that, which can already be seen from his physical appearance only.
