Great video as always. Here’s one of my favorites. Soon after Tom Selleck shot the pilot of Magnum P.I. he was offered a movie role but CBS would let him do it. That role was Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Glad you enjoyed it! Yup, that's a wild one. I think Harrison Ford would'e been a big star without Indiana Jones, but it really cemented his icon status.

Smith also passed on it because they wouldn't hire Jada Pinkett as Trinity. He admits now that he would've been the wrong choice. He wouldn't have played Neo the way Keanu did, which was very understated. The movies would've been quite different. He says he didn't see Neo that way at all. That his vision for Neo would've probably ruined the movie. He also had story change ideas that the Wachowskis weren't amenable to. He also said Keanu was the right choice for the role. It just worked.

When I met Harrison '72, he was hoping to put food on the table, by tellin' folks he knew what a good cup of coffee was, Chasing Commercials, but had only had one in past 18 months!! I said 'Eff that', & Carpentry azz-well! He was doing remod on Cousin's home in Santa Monica, w/o back-up project, fallin' behind w/lectric, to be shut off on his home, when Cous sent for me in Mich. Jetted out there, sanded entire project with him, & he had six days to apply finish! When Cous, Hubby, & myself returned, they had a Brand New Home! It was so perfect, 1st time in Cous's life she cried...& just couldn't stop! Her Hubby Al, read tent note from 'em, which said wanted pictures, so Hubby vowed we'd get him a set w/Rolli Flex Camera! I flew for film, Cous & Al prepped home for shoot, & I shot entire roll w/o Tripod, but they came out Aces!! We had just viewed Photos, when Harry Ding-Donged us, had Wife's 35mm strapped around neck, inquiring about pictures. Cous made him wait a bit, because after all, he'd made her cry! Out to his Panel, and quick back to door, it was Harry again! He said in comparison, his Acting Portfolio Photos, looked like Doggie Doo, could we take new ones for him? Lucky, both he & Al same size, height, wt, build, etc & soon Harrison was Carpenter, Soldier, Cowboy, Exec, Naval Ofcr, Golfer, On Safari, Yachtsman, Bettor at Track, Fisherman, & to get Mr. Lucas's Eye, Harry was a Gear-Head in pinstripe Mechanics' Coveralls workin' on a car....., so in few days, Harry really was, Bob Falfa in George Lucas film, American Graffiti, not too distant from Star Wars!! Wasn't that lucky!!! Betcha, you've never seen truth like above in your "Way Off The Cliff Notes", Buddy, and wondered why in the hell, in early interviews, he always mentioned, it's important to do good work! I wonder where on Earth he'd ever gotten a silly idea like that?? Only reason commented, is fact, have no idea how to contact Harry now! Bite is, I'm Principal in True-Life Oscar Quality Tale, where Jetliner Capt, saved 155/155, where NTSB's opinion was, there wasn't opportunity to even save one!! I was the Ahole State Hwy Wkr in Orange Pickup, that alerted Capt to danger, that NTSB claimed initially did not exist, to back up their opinion, but Reopened Investigation straightened it out, so where the hell is Harry??

I believe that one of the reasons Connery turned down LOTR was because he didnt want to spend 18 months shooting in New Zealand. I really want to believe that that was actually the biggest reason he turned it down. I mean what is there to understand other than LOTR is a hugely popular literary classic loved around the world. Surely Connery understood the box office potential of the movies. But when you're already rich, inconveniences like difficult 18 month shoots might be a unappealing no matter the money. Much like Eastwood turning down Apocalypse Now. Of course the Apocalypse Now shoot turned out to be much harder but the LOTR shoot was no picnic either.

That's what I've heard from somewhere too about Connery and LOTR. Quite a bit of actors did want to work with Coppola, but did not want to leave Hollywood to film "Apocalypse Now" and that's reasonable thing.

True, I was thinking of Time Bandits. Also funny, he didn't understand LotR and The Matrix but for some reason does end up in Zardoz. I mean how do you explain that? 😂

I could be convinced otherwise. I've mostly associated Connery with more action, more serious, almost Christopher Lee-ish type roles. He has his moments in other films, but I also think those kind of roles suit him. I'm not so sure he could've done Dumbledore or Gandalf better than Harris or McKellen, but I could've seen him as Count Dooku (even though I think Lee nailed that part).

To be honest, I'm glad all these turn downs happened, all these movies are way better the as they are even if those other actors are amazing. As Clint said, for somebody, but not me.
@Syntopikon
@Syntopikon 20 күн бұрын
I think we're along the same line. The movies could've been different, but not necessarily better. I think most of the roles were well played by the actors chosen, and the only one that I could REALLY see an equivalent for is if Clint Eastwood played K in Men in Black - but even then, I don't think he could've pulled off Tommy Lee Jones laconic humor. (like how TLJ says "Whatever you say, slick" in the first one).

Clooney being allergic to opiates on top of the chronic pain is tragic. As someone who's dealt with chronic pain and had to use opiates ( as horrible as the addiction. experience is) trying to manage a tense pain without them is worse

It's interesting as he was much more discerning early on in his career. But in the 2010s, he started running into financial issue, which is why he took on roles in movies that aren't particularly good. He even said that he did Jack & Jill because he was almost broke.

@@Syntopikon Yes, that's sad. Remember how we all treasured long-awaited confrontation of De Niro & Pacino in "Heat" and it was so great and then after ten years or so there was another team up which was just so dull and uninspired - "A Righteous Kill" was it called?

I stand by it. I know a lot of people like it, and some consider Prisoner of Azkaban to be their favorite, but I don't think it comes near Richard Harris. Gambon is more, for lack of a better word, energetic, than Harris, but the latter feels more Dumbledore-y.

@blakel8121
@blakel8121 20 күн бұрын
@stdamonsbeard ...yes. it was written for children to be able to read and understand it, that isn't a criticism. It's a straight forward and well written story so the idea that he couldn't understand it is funny.
@melissaharris3389
@melissaharris3389 4 күн бұрын
@blakel8121 the LotR is NOT a children's book and was not written for children. It's well above a primary school reading level. The Hobbit _is_ a children's book, or more acutely, young adult fiction. Tolkien wrote the Hobbit based off stories he's told his son but the LoTR was very intended as an adult book. Connery not "understanding" the LoTR is widely believed to have been his excuse not to spend a year in New Zealand shooting on location. The man was in his 60s at the time, and I can honestly believe he didn't want you to be involved in what was clearly going to be a massive production that required _long_ hours in less then ideal conditions.
