My guess is a lot of oldies come out because they want to know what the noise is and to tell them to shut it off. Then they see people are actually doing something of use so stand there trying to figure out what is going on. They eventually get a waft of odour and realise it's sewer lines so go back inside and no longer worry about the noise.

On what Brett was talking about at the end, I had a similar hallucination that I solved the problem with time travel and the math was so simple it had to work. I have never had a hallucination ever before in my life. I had the same "sickness" nearly the same time, felt bad 1 day then haven't felt bad since.
