Riders even has characters running when their boards run out of air, and also has hover skates like Shadow. Between that and the boost, Riders can probably be retooled into a modern boost formula racer pretty cleanly. We know the formula works because of Riders and the boost games, and it has the characters on foot. They could even toss the Babylon Rogues in there using their boards instead of feet.

I had the PC version first as a kid (the music didn't work unfortunately), but I always really enjoyed this game, although it was pretty short (although as a kid I sucked enough to make it last much longer). I replayed it quite a lot as a child, later on I got the GEMs collection version and learned that it had that killer soundtrack, to this day its music stays on my playlists.

This game's soundtrack along with the classic trilogy solidified the positive sonic-stereotype (which are very rare) that "No matter how shitty the game itself is - Sonic always have banger music". An argument can be said about the levels, they vary in alternate paths with a lot emphasis on exploration, and they look kinda impressive with lots of detail for 1997 even if the gameplay sucks like, a lot. Mario Kart 64 aged pretty badly in terms of looks in comparison and was nowhere near impressive in graphics BUT it's a way more enjoyable and straight foward game because of it, as usual. It just gets to show what can be considered as impressive at the time isnt always the better option.

MK64 is far worse in design than R, playing R skillfully is actually interesting and many of the tracks have different ways to handle them regardless of your goal (item collection, time attack, bonus modes, character-specific runs) where-as MK64 barely has any worthwhile differences between tracks beyond gimmicks and most of it's actual gameplay is buried under mindless item usage
