Why your dress size is a total lie.. What is vanity sizing?

Do you let the size on your clothing dictate your happiness? Do you feel like you can only be more confident when the number on your size tag gets smaller and smaller? Guess what? Even if you buy a smaller dress, that may not even mean you've lost weight. It could be all a big marketing game that the retailers are playing with you. It's called VANITY SIZING.

+Яна Гульницкая haha not all fat people sit on the sofa all day eating burgers... I'm 20 to 30 pounds overweight and for the past 9 months I've been eating clean, counting calories, weight training 2 to 3 times a week plus doing regular cardio, at home workouts, yoga, walking, hiking, hiit, and some running too. Honestly not even sure why/how I'm still fat... That being said I don't see how anyone could have gotten offended by the original video- I thought it was really funny! There was nothing offensive about it at all!

When I was around 10 years old, I was SUPER tall for my age. My hips were (and i guess, still are) pretty big. I was struggling with self-image and insecurity. So one day, my mother took me dress shopping. Because I was so tall, and my hips were so big, I could only fit into a size 16 (remember, I was a kid, so the sizes were based on age). Afterwards, I asked my mom if I could have some of my brothers leftover birthday cake. She laughed and said no. "Are you kidding me? You fit into a size 16 today. You are NOT getting any cake." I went up to my room, and cried. She apologized later, but it was the absolute wrong age to say something like that. That sentence has struck with me, and now I REALLY struggle with body image. I have vowed to never comment on my daughter's body, because that one sentence had me holding in my stomach for a whole summer. A WHOLE SUMMER! Please, if you're a mom, just sign your kid up for a sport. Don't laugh at her body, and please, PLEASE, don't say anything about sizes.

as a bigger girl this makes me so happy that you are actually taking action. I so badly wanted to get some pop flex items but I'm really big busted and I'm a size 14 or up to an 18 ( see sizes don't matter that's a huge range) but I still couldn't confidently purchase since the sizes were so small. I want to look great and feel great when I work out but it's not really possible when most of the brands cater to the petite. I'm so taking that survey and I am really hopeful my 36H self can get some gear in the future besides a water bottle!

I'm really happy you made this video Casey, this is something I have been struggling with especially after having my daughter. I worked really really hard after pregnancy to get my weight back down and when I got to a point where I started feeling good and proud, I go shopping for jeans and see that I'm still a size 16!!! 16!!! in the past, size 16 was for very voluptuous plus size or obese women. It was really messing with me because even though I'm not the skinniest or most fit girl out there, when I look in the mirror I do not see a "size 16 woman." I like that you explained what vanity sizing is and the fact that there is no standardized system for women's clothing. It truly does make me feel better about my number. I was hoping you would touch on the fact that A LOT of stores are starting to REMOVE SIZE XL ENTIRELY from their stores!!! Some of my favorite stores (forever 21) I can't shop at anymore because of this.. I think it's absolutely ridiculous and a form of discriminating. also wanted to point out a lot of KZbinr's and social influencers all shop at those places you mentioned, which makes others feel like they have to shop there as well even though those clothes look better on the socialite model size person versus an average size person. All of these things come together to just make us feel BAD about ourselves!!!! I'm glad you made a video on this topic.. it's been on mind a lot lately & it 100% needs to be discussed! Love ya casey

Went to take driver, but size 0 isn't there. I'm really petite and could probably shop in the little girls sizes but I'm in my mid 20s. Size 0 is the only way I can wear big girl clothes! ☺️ It'd be great if that size were included in the survey! Thanks! You're doing great.

@SelphieFairy
@SelphieFairy 8 жыл бұрын
I agree that Cassey isn't one to shame people for not being thin, so I didn't think much of it. But at the same time, I do understand how people could have misunderstood. The truth is, a lot of people who preach being "fit" instead of "skinny" still inherently include being thin in their definition of "fit." True story, just look up those "fitspiration" photos. They claim that they're not about being skinny, but all of their inspirational images still only include incredibly thin women. The only difference now is that they're very thin women with muscles and big butts. They basically just created an even more unattainable standard for women. So, while it's sad it's necessary, it's good that Cassey clarified.

Same! But it's not only the length, if a pair of pants fit my ankles like completely tight, won't they fit my hips or ass and it's so annoying! I literally only have 2 pairs of skinny jeans that fit me perfectly. why does it have to be so hard to find some pants that actually fit?🙄

actually I don't care anymore when it comes to sizes. I'm size 0-2 but I often buy clothes that are bigger bc I feel more comfortable when I wear sweaters or jackets. but what I really hate is the jeans industry. I usually need a 32 or 34 for a jeans but in some stores like tally weijl or h&m their jeans are way too small?? like girl not even a doll fits in them. they really need to check on what they sell out bc it really frustrates me. anyway I love your video it's so inspiring to me and a number shouldn't follow someone for the rest of their lifes it brings nothing to them. 💜

"the best accessory is your confidence" Everyone should remember this sentence that Cassey said. I am a US 12, 169cm, and for an asian I am considered qute tall for a female asian. Im bigger in size than an average asian so. Well, in all, I stand out. I used to be conscious about what I wear but as I grew up I brushed it off and wore whatever I felt like wearing. My friends once told me that I looked confident in whatever I'm wearing. That compliment made me feel good about myself because I CHOSE to be confident. :)

Your video is very inspiring. :) In the last 15 years, I have found my center and because of that, the love of my life 6 years ago. I am not thin, no, but I don't need to. Being happy with myself is what makes me gorgeous. And being smart enough to know, that I am enough the way I am, is making me just perfectly imperfect. :) No one can tell you how you "should" look, because the way you think you look best, is what matters. It's totally okay if others don't understand this, as long as you do.

Very rarely does anyone else see the tag inside your clothing. They only see what a clothing item looks like on your body, so it's best to get a bigger size if you need it, because all onlookers are going to see is the clothing item, not the tag. You'll be impressed with the small tag for a moment, but the appropriate sized clothing would make you happier in the long run. I've also heard people say that it can help to cut the tag size out of clothing after you buy it if you struggle with fixating on it too often, or it effects your attitude towards clothing.

Great response Cassey! When I first saw the "things fit girls understand," I didn't think I would be able to relate to anything, but I did, and it had nothing to do with different body types. Anyone of any size who regularly works out would understand. :)

love it for a big yt'er like you to talk about this!!! dress size is only a number we made up all together, and now we believe it is some kind of a 'truth' - which in some way is weird. let's just look at a body and see it's shining beauty instead of a number

In my wardrobe I have clothes from UK size 6 -14 , It's been a long time since I cared about what the label says and just bought what fits and makes me feel good (I'm currently at my biggest weighing 60kg and in my third trimester). You're right; more people should not care what a tag says and be more confident! we're all beautiful

Cassey, I am so happy that I have never done the vanity sizing thing. I Don't have problems with things being too tight but I used to struggle with jeans. If they fit my butt than the length isn't right or the other way around... I prefer tights anyway so I have stopped struggling. I pretty much only look at sizing if what I have grabbed doesn't fit well enough. I have no idea what size most my clothes are. I cut off the label things because they are itchy. I workout every once in a while and there are things I want to change about my body because I have noticed that my blood pressure evens out when I work out. I want to make my body hurt less because of my back so I want some muscle to hold it up better. I feel comfortable naked although I have some muffin top and cellulite. I have stretch marks around my thighs and on my hips but I'm not ashamed or self-conscious. I Like my small boobs and my butt. I'm 57 kg and I'm 160 cm. I gained 6 kg over the summer. Thank you for your video and sorry for the long comment but I wanted to give some info and help you get to know one of your popsters. I love you!

I LOVE your designs and I love that you're doing this survey. A problem that I noticed brands pay little attention to is color. I'm a Deep Autumn and I wish I could look good in your pastels (your mermaid shorts are gorgeous). I would love to see rose pink, dark orange, lime or hot turquoise. Deep, rich, vibrant colors you would see in India :)

Clothing sizes are so varied these days. When I was younger a size 2 was a size 2 throughout various brands. I'm 40 now & I wear everything from a size 2 to a size 6. Shopping is so frustrating now.

I used to buy jeans at hollister. My size is usually a 1 and I had bought that size there before so I picked up a pair of jeans in that size without trying it on. When I got home and tried it on it was too big on my calves and hip area and too short at the same time. So that goes to show how these stores are just putting numbers on clothes to make us spend more money. Great vid cassey!❤️

So yesterday I was at UO trying on jeans. I took two different washes of the same style/fit jean, same size and everything, but actually could barely fit into the second pair. Just thought it was super weird.

why were people being dummies about how she titled the other video there is a difference between fit people or people that work out and people that don't lol simple as that the things she named are things people usually experience while or after working out people that don't exercise won't experience those things what's the big deal I'm tired of people not coming to the reality that some people just don't workout and/or are not healthy and that's fine whatever floats that individuals boat but don't get mad when us people that do workout get a video there's nothing wrong with it in my opinion

I agree. Size is just a number. A number that no one will ever check, unless they are looking through your clothes. Sometimes I even feel bad about the size but I try to remember if it looks good and modest, wear it

it's so true, honestly. I lost 25 pounds (I weigh 125 lbs) and I went from a size 9 to size 7, but for some clothes, sizes 8-10 fit me so much better, Large is sometimes more comfortable than Medium in dresses. and when I try on Small, they fit great! and for a while, I thought I was extra-small! but then, I try on medium and it just becomes a mess again. so I have a bunch of different sizes. my mom has encouraged me to just pick out the clothes that fit me well, not the clothes with the size I think I may be. a tip: always try on the clothes you want before buying them!!!! that way you can get a different size if it feels too tight or too baggy!!!

Every inch of your body will speaks out with radiance. xx

Love this! I am short and small. I usually in pants a size 6. But every store is different you can either be the same size, smaller, or bigger size pants. Shirts I am either a small or medium, but some mediums are like dresses on me! I am very healthy and fit but some places don't take into consideration that some women got muscle muscle weighs more than fat. I went to college for health and wellness so if anyone is concerned with your BMI if you are exercise and are fit remember muscle weighs more than fat. If you take care of yourself and happy what you look like then its all good :)
