There's a story/myth about how the name Macau came about, considering that the name of Macau in Cantonese is pronounced as "O-Moon" (or "Ao-men" in Mandarin). Rumours had it that when the Portuguese landed in Macau, the A-Ma Temple was actually where they landed and they asked the locals about what's the name of the place. The locals, understanding no Portuguese whatsoever, thought that they were asking about the A-Ma Temple, which is pronunced as "Ma-gok-miu" in Cantonese, so they answered "Ma-gok" to the Portuguese. The Portuguese, on the other hand, understanding no Cantonese whatsoever, thought that "Ma-gok" was the name of the whole town, and that's how the name "Macau" came into existence. Not sure if it's true, but somehow it seemed the most valid explanation (to me personally) as to why the Chinese and Portuguese name of Macau sound so different. There's an even funnier story/myth about how the name Taipa, which is the other side of Macau, came about.

@@sofialongevity5601 Some people, whose parents are all Chinese, born overseas, say US, also can get Chinese passports. Based on the logic of your argument, the US "belonged to" China?
@brianplum18255 жыл бұрын
@@sofialongevity5601 It all started with nitpicking words like Macao "belong to", "governed by". Politicians only like to use the word "administer". Macao is a Chinese SAR (special administrative region). But we're not politicians , we should just use whatever words we like as long as people understand.
@temporarytemporary98975 жыл бұрын
@@sofialongevity5601 I guess you mixed up the concepts "territory" and "colony". If a place is a piece of territory belonged to a country, the citizens there have political rights, like the right to be the supreme chief of the place or even the leader of the whole country. Nowadays, in Macau, a native Chinese have the right to be Chief Executive of the Macau, (indeed, Fernando Chui is a Chinese) or even the chairman of China, no matter how hard it is. However, when Macau was a colony of Portugal, the Governor of Macau can only be a Portuguese designated by Portugal. So residents in Macau from 1849-1999 even can't be called citizens at all, they were only miserable the colonized. Have you ever heard a Chinese Governor of Macau during this 150 years? It's more impossible for a Chinese to be a president of Portugal. And from the word "Governor", literally, you can see the attitude of Portugal gov: it thought Macau was only a colony for Portugal, because "Governor" is dedicated to "colony". So, to be more accurate, we say a "territory" belonged to a country, but a colony ruled by colonizers. After all, even "noble" colonists themselves felt sick to acknowledge that the a "humble" person in their colonies was one member among them, a compatriot, they only exploit benefit from people in colonies, but never share any rights or benefit with them.

@@sofialongevity5601 "Belong to" means Portugal got the sovereignty of Macau legally from some treaties like Treaty of Nanking, from which UK got sovereignty of HK. Then Portuguese heard " Macau ". In China has a song.The lyrics “你可知Macau,不是我真姓” explains it.

Macau is great and I personally was born and raise in Macau but let me tell you, it is the most boring place ever and it is quite depressing to be brutally honest.

I find it suspiciously unbelievable that you did not know Macau was ruled by Portugal. You were studying in China for a few years, so I assume you are interested in Chinese culture and history, surely you would have read something about this. Second, you have traveled to many parts of the world, and you should be more interested in history , and should have came across this fact. Third, in the age of the Internet, who would go visit a place without checking for information on the internet? If you were to look up Macau on the internet, every article would have mentioned Portugal. And lastly, when you got off the boat in Macau, you surely had to go pass the immigration/custom checkpoint. That should have ring a bell. So I find it hard to believe you did not know this. You were either a very careless traveler, or you were lying. Just because you have blonde hair, it does not mean you have to act dumb.

Perhaps she was really trying to act dumb so that she can get the locals involved with the video. Like interviewing the hotel front desk clerk. Nice try, but it made her look stupid. I bet the clerk was thinking....damn no wonder they call them dumb blondes.
