I'm from Chengdu, I like to eat rabbit heads when I was young. It was only 5 cents per head. Rabbits can grow very fast, so was a very easy choice when people hard to find food to eat. I brought one rabbit head to my Singapore friend, end up, his boy had no dare to eat.

When I was working in a prison years ago, somehow a rabbit got in under the fence. It became popular with the inmates as a novelty but also because it reversed the usual route. One of my students, a young Chinese drug smuggler, saw the rabbit as a potential lunch so he stalked it, hoping to throw his coat over it and take it to his friends who worked in the prison kitchen. Luckily he didnt succeed or some of the Canadian inmates would have done him some harm.

The politeness of the Chinese, although not elaborate like the politeness of the Japanese, is pleasing because it is the politeness of the heart. The politeness of the Japanese, on the other hand, although elaborate, is not so pleasing, and I have heard some foreigners express their dislike of it, because it is what may be called a rehearsal politeness - a politeness learnt by heart as in a theatrical piece. It is not a spontaneous politeness which comes direct from the heart. In fact the politeness of the Japanese is like a flower without fragrance, whereas the politeness of a really polite Chinese has a perfume like the aroma of a precious ointment - instar unguenti fragrumis - which comes from the heart.
@wyz9815
@wyz9815 Жыл бұрын
@jonah_lau
@jonah_lau Жыл бұрын
但我们也要注意:辜鸿铭在这本书里提到的中国人,他加了一个定语,是“真正的中国人”(原文是:“In fact I propose that before the real Chinaman, the old Chinese type of humanity, disappears altogether from the world we should take a good last look at him and see if we can find anything organically distinctive in him which makes him so different from all other people and from the new type of humanity which we see rising up in China today.
@yiqi8526
@yiqi8526 Жыл бұрын

10:21 You're holding the chopsticks very far at the end. There is an old Chinese saying that if a child is habitually holding the chopsticks at the far end, when the child grows up he/she will be very far away from home. Guess that is true for you... 😂 I've been to Chengdu twice and tried the mala rabbit head once and it was very nice. The only thing I couldn't stand with Sichuan dishes is they put Sichuan pepper in almost every dishes. The first few days were still ok but after that I really couldn't stand it, especially when unknowingly biting into a Sichuan pepper stem in the dish (gosh). But the best dish I had in Chengdu was the chili fish. My Chengdu friend brought me to a restaurant to eat it, and I could really say it's the best fish I'd tried in my entire life.

Seriously if Australia opens its door to Sichuan people, no more rabbits holes in beautiful lands any more.

Meanwhile, the excessive amount of rabbits are taking over the land of Australia since no one looks them as a source of food 😂

I also wonder, if you eat their rabbit more, that the nuance of flavor will spring through the sauce as you develop you palate for the cuisine. I so love your content.
