In this video Dr Sanjay Gupta discusses why blood clots form in atrial fibrillation and why you should continue anticoagulants even after you have had treatment for the Afib. My website is www.yorkcardiology.co.uk and my Facebook page is yorkcardiology@gmail.com

I am 75 years old and I was taking a low-dose aspirin every day and decided to quit taking it because it seemed to be bothering my stomach. I had an SVT attack 6 years ago, but haven’t had any more trouble since. After hearing your video today, I’m going to start taking it again, and make sure I take it with plenty of food. I wish you would move to good old Texas in the USA. You would definitely be my heart doctor! You explain things so well.

watched a reel from York Cardiology where the Doctor spoke of the possibility that not using blood thinners may not be the cause of AF blood clots.

So are we soon going to be putting everyone with a CHADS risk score of 2 or more on anticoagulants, whether or not they have a fib? That is a lot of people.

Only with my 12th stroke was I diagnosed with Afib and prescribed an antigoagulant. My brother checked my heart rate, as he is an official at equestrian endurance rides and his cardiologist neighbor "educated" him. That was 2004; my teams of doctors caught up in 2019. I seem to "collect comorbidities" of course.

how does one survive 12 strokes, not doubting that you did not have these but wow, what did you do or not do after the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.

I don’t think blood clots happen because of afib, but afib tends to be an ok marker of cardiovascular risk (though cac is much better and a zero cac would basically say screw afib, that’s why you have these studies of lone afib that show no risk). What I do not believe in at all are the quack treatments for afib like ablation or anti arrhythmics. This is just fighting symptoms, I don’t think any study shows any risk reduction (you simply don’t have the marker of disease, but you still have the disease. In case of ablation, you simply torch tissue until so little nonscar area is left for current to travel or cells to depolarize that it’s not enough to switch to back to back firing in case of hypercapnia say. I’m pretty sure these ablations come with the risk of torching the SA node or AV node, or the current is too weak, after which you need a pacemaker implanted. Of course it couldn’t have been the ablation. But even that is probably counted as a success). The only cardio event risk reduction is with anticoagulants, a trade off with bleeding risk and drug side effects.

I had nofood or drink for several hours due to a stressful situation...then I rushed out to a party and had a couple of Proseccos with food. Went into AF for 12hours. Am hypertensive and taking Bendroflumathizine 250 mg. Daily. Am 76 . I bought a little cardiac monitor due to having APCs. My GP wants me to have ACs. I wanted to find out more. I'm an ex CCU nurse. My echocardiographer sister in law and I follow you from NZ. Would be interested to get a subjective opinion regarding my situation. Go you! Faye 😷😍

Is devigatron good for patients with no comorbidity but have family history of stroke? Can Gene mutation leads to stroke? In spite of taking anticoagulant if a person faces stroke and needs for an urgent surgery then what can do a surgeon?I mean the action of anticoagulant can be reversed or not?Please ans sir.

In rate control for Afib using medications does it control atrial or ventricular rate.If these medications control the ventricular rate as these medications act on AV node ,how does it help prevent clot formation as the clots are formed in atria not ventricals.Can someone answer this please.
@davidpowell3347
@davidpowell3347 8 ай бұрын
The ventricular rate is what gets "controlled" but I don't know if the clot risk is affected---it might be possible-- I don't know if slower ventricular rate increases the variation in atrial volume over the ventricular filling/ejection cycle thus improving the flow through the flaccid passive atria during atrial fibrillation also why my resting ventricular/pulse rate is still 48 - 58 in spite of atrial fibrillation without any "rate control" medications
