Very cool! A one off payment like when we are paying for the game though might be more my speed.

Same. I’d buy it with a slightly higher one off payment, and even more so if it were available through something like Steam for instance. I don’t do subscriptions 😅

Ben Burns explains the need for a subscription model in a comment above. Subscription is a way better model for this kind of thing than something with microtransactions, or paid for expansion content.

@@enemyv I understand it from the business angle, but from a customer's POV, it's not in their best interest to sub in for a game. That's the risk you take and based on what I'm seeing in these comments, the money made from people that want to buy the game outright compared to those subbing are larger.

While I do love the work you've done on BotC (both physical and digital) I have to say that, while I would like to, I cannot really justify paying a monthly fee (and one so high at that) to have access to the online app. Now don't get me wrong, I do think you deserve to be paid for the hard work, but as a customer I can't perceive the price as fair at the moment. I believe a lower point of entry or a once-off purchase could be more beneficial for the game in the long run, but hey, maybe I'm just not the target audience? I'll keep an eye out if anything changes :)

I feel ya. Judging by the 1991 in your name, I'm assuming we're about the same age. I also grew up in an era where you bought the game, be it a disk or a cartridge, and then you owned it and could play it to your heart's content. Unfortunately, a major problem with games that require servers, particularly servers which are streaming large amounts of video and audio, are that there are constant upkeep costs that just make a one-off payment model impossible for a small, independent company. The moment you hit critical mass with sales of the app, you slowly start to lose money until you inevitably can't pay for the servers anymore. Big companies, for example EA, can afford to do this, because they'll a) have loads of money to sink into it and b) sell you a bunch of cosmetics and equipment that makes the game easier for the player. Then, once it stops being profitable, they'll just stop support for the game and it immediately dies. We can't afford to (and honestly don't want to) do this. Maybe at some point down the line we'll be in a position to re-visit the subscription model for the app, but as things currently stand, this is the only way we can cover the costs of upkeep and continued development. I obviously don't begrudge anyone who doesn't want to participate. Like I said, I totally understand. But I don't want folks thinking we've chosen this model from a bunch of different ones that were available to us. It's literally the only way we can realistically develop the app right now.

If you typically play with the same 10-12 people, sharing the price of a minion account makes it quite affordable in my opinion. Or at least it is then a lot cheaper pp (and more fun) than a shared Netflix account.

While the app looks nice and seems to be very handy, the pricetag is just way to high... especially when you aren't in the US and have to pay even more for exchanges. I get it, development isn't free, servers aren't free and you guys want to make money too, but this pricetag just feels prohibitive if you ask me.

This app is the only way I'll play Clocktower moving forward. Discord was never a great way to play for me, and Zoom was decent but a slog (and also cost as much per month as this app does.) Video and voice is integrated, things run pretty smoothly, it's about as close as one can get to playing in person, and, oh yeah, new experimental characters coming this year!

I don't know how this works. I could be trying to get a group together sometime in the next couple of months, friends and family scattered here and there. Is it possible, and is it considered an abuse of the system, to just pay for the month I know I'm going to play? Asking for a monthly fee to play the game online is, for me, is like asking a monthly fee to do an Escape Room once or twice a year. I certainly do not mind paying a fee for the service. I think using the app for a month (or even for a night) for me and my friends for $15 is a great optional alternative to gathering everyone together to play. But since we will probably only play like 1-2 times in a year, I would probably only sign up on months that I plan to play.

Hey, folks of the Pandemonium Institute! Question/Suggestion: Do you have a playlist that explains to beginners how to play the game via the app with an explanation on how Trouble Brewing specifically works? I sent some videos to friends as I want to run a game with them (including the how to play in person video), but the app has its own level of learning thats outside of learning the script. I realize it gets tweaked all the time, but including how-to app stuff for people who are reluctant out of fear of looking silly or incompetent would be a plus. Also if you have a suggested example game to show said group of people, that would help, too! Cheers! Love you folks as you're amazing

To make server costs more manageable, has it been considered that the video data could be shared P2P rather than flowing through the server? Skype used to operate this way before Microsoft bought them out and ruined it...

Is the app something that you lose access to whenever you stop paying the subscription to the patreon? And also, if i were to get access to it, would i be able to send that out to all the other people who would be playing with me? Or do they also have to subscribe to the patreon in order to get access and play a game with me?
