Just wanted to know....do you sell our donated stem cells or provide them for free to patients? Do we get to meet the person whom we donated our stem cells provided its a match. Please answer.

Thanks for your message.. Yes, you get to meet the person whom the stem cells has been transplanted, after 2 years of the transplant, once the patient has recovered completely.. DKMS-BMST is a donor center. Our mission is to give blood cancer and blood disorder patients with a second chance at life by facilitating a successful stem cell transplant. WE work with transplant centers across the world and when we receive a request from the patients transplant physician, we contact the donor who has been matched with the patient. Our work is primarily to facilitate the donation procedure and therefore do not get directly involved with the patient or his/her treatment. DKMS-BMST incurs expenses at various stages from registration costs to when a donor donates such as medical examination, laboratory costs, stem cell collection, travel costs of the donor on day of donation and loss of wage. These costs are all covered by DKMS-BMST. Being a not-for-profit organization, any additional funds received by DKMS-BMST is reinvested into the mission to provide as many second chances at life as possible!

Its my birthday today...i am going to register myself....i am 24 and healthy... might as well make use of it..just one question...is it safe to have the procedure during this covid pandemic ?

Thanks for your message. When you register with DKMS-BMST, you are making yourself available as a potential blood stem cell donor for a patient in need of a transplant. The safety of our donors is extremely important and we follow safe and effective procedures and processes. You will only be asked to donate if you match with a patient. You can register as a potential blood stem cell donor by checking your eligibility and filling the registration form at dkms-bmst.org/register A swab kit will be sent to your address. You have to collect your cheek swab samples and sign on the consent form and send it back to us. Then we will send your swab samples to our lab for HLA typing and this information will be anonymously stored on the global database. Only when you come up as a match for a patient is when you will be contacted by us to donate your blood stem cells through a procedure called PBSC which is similar to platelet donation. Then we will send your swab samples to our lab for HLA typing and this information will be anonymously stored on the global database. Then you receive a welcome email from our end.. Only when you come up as a match for a patient is when you will be contacted by us to donate your blood stem cells through a procedure called PBSC which is similar to platelet donation. If the person is a match but cannot go through the process if their veins are not big enough, is there an alternate in that case? I wanted to donate platelets once but i was rejected as my veins are not big enough to extract and push back blood.

Thanks for your message. There are two methods of stem cell donation - Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) collection method and Bone marrow transplant. But in India, we follow only the PBSC method for transplantation. The other alternative to the veins is femoral line.

After the stem cell removal blood is again put into donors body Why? and if I want to donate but I am not sure about putting blood again to my body..

Thanks for your message. During PBSC (Peripheral blood stem cell collection), you donate only stem cells that are extracted from your blood. The blood is taken from one arm, passed through a machine that separates your blood stem cells and then the blood is returned to your other arm. This is similar to platelet donation.

I have registered for stem cell donation and the swab kit will reach me in a few days but what if there are no collection centres of dkms in my town.... In that case if I find a match how will I get to the nearest collection centre.

You may not always have to travel to a different city to donate, it depends on your location and if we have a partner collection center in your city. It is not possible for you to donate at just any blood bank as collecting blood stem cells and transporting these, is a highly skilled procedure and unfortunately not all clinics have the technological capabilities and expertise needed to do this. DKMS-BMST incurs expenses at various stages from registration costs to when a donor donates such as medical examination, laboratory costs, stem cell collection, travel costs of the donor on day of donation.
