Blood plays a paradoxical role in human societies, reminding us of both life and of death. When it comes to the biblical narrative, blood is no different. It’s all too easy to see the blood around which the sacrificial systems operate as a substitute for due punishment. In this video, Prof. Wright argues that, rather, this blood, and the blood of Jesus, work within its life-giving connotations.
Reading the Images is a weekly series of videos from N.T. Wright Online which explores the common images that run throughout the Biblical narrative.

Outstanding! I have been thinking about how God was pleased with the sacrifices rather than angry. This supports the idea that God's wrath was satisfied without him being angry at Jesus on the cross.

Prof. Wright, another brilliant, insightful and really important interpretation of the most crucial doctrine of God - humanity being healed through atonement in Leviticus and Christ atoning for human sin in the New Testament.

Wonderful explanation…I am constantly reminded to reprogram my understanding of death as not a ceasing of existence, but the idea of separation…we are separated from our body at death…spiritual death is separation from God…ritual cleansing is restoring access to God. Good stuff…

How timely. I just started reading Rethinking the Atonement by David Moffitt. That book along with this video is revolutionizing the way I view atonement. So cool to see themes in the Bible connect and come to life.

Very good exposition of what Dr Wright blood means! With respect to the Holiness of the Creator that you have mentioned, the concept of a saint referring to his children is defined as being set apart for the service of God. But what can we say about the Holy concept referred to God? Does the I Am set itself aside for the service of someone or some? Well, in the case of Jesus Christ, his words confirm that he did not come to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. The issue is that you cannot compare the Holiness of the Creator with ours. That is, God is Sublime. In reference to the blood, it reminds me of the statements of some unbelieving Jews who affirm that it is not possible for God to send his Son to sacrifice as if God were the god Moloch who takes pleasure in human sacrifices and death. It seems that they do not understand the concept of life in the blood but they also do not understand the permissiveness of God and the one who promotes human sacrifices and death, which is the adversary and his allies. God allowed the enemy to play along by allowing the passion and death of his Son, to deal a devastating blow to the Kingdom of evil.

God provided clothing for Adam and Eve to cover their shame resulting from their guilty conscience. Presumably it was an animal skin, perhaps a lamb , the first shedding of blood. Was the offering of an animal sacrifice a reminder of God's redemptive act, the shedding innocent blood so that we can walk with Him without us having to hide in our shame?

Excellent observation… not only were animals sacrificed in order to clothe Adam and Eve, they would have been covered by the blood of the sacrificed animals… Interesting picture…

Sin generates death. Death generates impurity. The Living God will not dwell in a place polluted by Death. The stain of death is removed by the application of life, in the form of blood or water that moves of its own accord (living water). The theological implications of this are staggering. God's will for us is Life! Let that sink in and shape your existence and you will be transformed. Oh how I wish God's people understood this.

@@parsaeye you are absolutely right. It's also true that the beauty of music lies in different voices contributing their unique sound to the whole. So the issue is separating signal from noise. This occurs naturally in the audience. A lone wolf, by isolating themself from their community and the feedback it gives doesn't understand that knowledge is generated and preserved by communities. This is true everywhere, not just in religion. At least this is the story I tell myself.

As soon as Jesus died and His Blood was shed the veil was rent in 2 and God presence was no longer isolated to a tent for just a few but God through Jesus in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, a new relationship, a new covenant was now for all, Jew and Gentile. Heaven plus earth reality convergence in our temples. At the time Caiphas, he being High Priest unknowingly prophesied that Jesus would die for the people. Also, caiphas did not know he would be the last High Priest to go behind them he veil.

If you take biblical theology seriously, then the only conclusion is that there is a place in God's kingdom for those who want it.
