To clarify: I don't think all of these are bad translations - I actually think most of them are quite impressive. Nor do I know how much contact the english translation team had with From Software. I wish I did. I'm just doing my best to point out some discrepancies. Getting this video out of the way is important, because now we can be more confident in the english we're reading. If anyone is calling out Frognation for doing a bad job translating, then they're being vacuous.
And yes, I remember Rom is apparently female.

Considering Myazaki made the Souls games to try and capture the feeling he got when reading English fantasy stories when he didn't have good English comprehension, it's actually really appropriate that things in his games get _lost in translation_. XD
@Darkblos

He himself said that the books he read weren't meant for his age, so he made up the parts that he didn't fully understand, and added a bit of his own imagination to it, that's where the whole thing with the lore being in item descriptions and the ambiguity that surrounds the story of his games came from.

The Japanese name of Rom could be a reference to Azatoth from Lovecraft's works, as he's referred to as an "Idiot God", who has more power than he knows, and possibly isn't even thinking.
@RoboBoddicker
@RoboBoddicker 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. In fact, it's the same term used to describe Azathoth in Japanese: 盲目白痴の神 (Moumoku Hakuchi no Kami - the Blind Idiot God). And Rom is 白痴の蜘蛛 (Hakuchi no Kumo - the Idiot Spider).

@@RoboBoddicker Then it's a case of meaning being lost when Lovecraft was first translated to Japanese since _idiot_ obviously isn't being used as an insult but in an antiquated sense. Fitting that the word would get translated back to English with more meaning being lost.

@RoboBoddicker 2 жыл бұрын
@@n0denz Actually, the original Japanese translation of Lovecraft is pretty spot on. 白痴 (hakuchi) is an antiquated clinical term for severe mental deficiency, just like 'idiot' in English - it was certainly chosen to convey Lovecraft's intended meaning. It's an offensive term nowadays (like 'retard' in English), so it's unlikely you'd see it in a modern video game except as a reference to Lovecraft :) Sorry, I didn't make that clear!

Some insight from a trained translator: The most important aspect for translation is the understanding of *context*. The history, the culture, the situation during which the words are being said, the intended audience, the identity of the speaker, everything adds up to the context of a piece of work, and understanding that is central for a translator to comprehend the work they're translating, which is in turn the basis to produce good translations. Bloodborne though...well, let's just say it's a game that tells stories passively. You don't get pages of lore and dialogues like in most RPGs, and the world itself is a confusing mess (not that it's a bad thing). A professional translator would spend days to communicate with the original producer to figure out the context and intention, if all they get are these seemingly puzzling one-liners for characters who's background may take pages to explain. I'd imagine that Bloodborne's localization team didn't have the luxury to do so - time difference, inter-bureau communication, deadline imposed from above to plan ahead voice acting, etc. They may have to fill the blanks themselves during their "localization", which technically speaking is a very unprofessional thing to do, but hey, sometimes it will have to do. (Also there's the obvious copyright maneuvering for the set that clearly should be named "Tomb Raider set")

what if the old hunter's bone was Gehrman's amputated leg. It would explain how it gives the quickening ability to those who use it as the quickening was a technique of Gehrman's. It would also explain why the technique was used only by Gehrman's disciples. As eventually the bone and the technique with it, must have been lost when Gehrman's workshop was shut down. Why can't the betrayed scholar be the Queen herself? That would explain why her blood is so pure and different to not only become immortal but also to make use of the strange blood dregs. Historically it was pretty common for royalty to be educated by colleges, which had largely become exclusionary institutions to justify political power through "education". You couldn't get a government job without a degree, but you couldn't get a degree without a powerful family.

I think it is admirable that you are digging deeper into the lore by interpreting the original Japanese language Vaati, however as a native Japanese speaker who follows the lore forum down there, I need to tell you that they will prefer the English text and subtext to ascertain most details and sometimes, to even disregard the Japanese. Because of how ambiguous the language can be to describe things it is generally considered better practice to look into the English translations (much like how the Lost Sinner was found a female in DS2). If things are ambiguous in Japanese it is checked in the English version for clarification, not the other way around. The general notion is that Souls series has its roots in English, and whilst other localisations may lose meaning in translation, the English version is considered superior in terms of reference. That said, it is up to your interpretation to make whatever meaning you would like out of it and From encourages so. Because not many of the Japanese community write in English, I wanted to point out the peculiarity of backpedaling to Japanese. Anyway, there are additional points of contribution I wanted to make: 墓暴き(Tomb Prospector Set) - this directly translates to Grave Pillager. Still pertains the sinister meaning. 再誕者 (One Reborn) - If it was 再誕者達 it would imply plural, but the game description is just singular. "Resurrected" is probably a more direct translation to 再誕 白痴のロマ(Vacuous Rom) - 白痴 (hakuchi) is translated as Vacuous, traditionally used as a derogatory term for idiot, mentally disabled, and is a taboo. From this, it has been postulated that Micolash coined this phrase ("...As you did for the Vacuous Rom, grant us eyes...") in envy that Kos granted Rom eyes but not to him. Another theory to this is that those that get in contact with Rom are idiots (白痴) as Rom herself has so much insight that any mere mortal that approaches her just pales in comparison.

VaatiVidya Thank you for your sincere response too, I didn't expect a reply. Your work continues to be better each time and the Japanese community envies such a talented story teller to be in the English community. It's always fun to see what the Japanese community theorise and they check it with the Western community's interpretations. I didn't know you were making this video this time, but I would be more than happy to contribute to further works and collaborate with others to bounce ideas so that quality of the information is refined - although I am native Japanese I couldn't say my interpretation of the language is flawless. @linkonair
@linkonair 8 жыл бұрын
+slightlytwistedagain Flora also applies to 'fertility' as well, which could very well have ties to the hunter becoming an infant Great One. "Every Great One loses it's child, and then yearns for a surrogate." Though this does leave the question of who Flora's lost child was though; I suspect Mergo, perhaps? though it seems to have ties to a separate Nightmare from which our hunter presides. It would make sense if the Hunter's Nightmare didn't [seemingly] establish that each Nightmare/Dream has a Host and Great One presiding over it. The Nightmare of Mensis with Micolash and the Brain of Mensis, with Mergo the infant great one. The Hunter's Nightmare with Maria and the late *Mother* Kos, and the Orphan. Following this pattern I can only assume Gherman is the host of our Dream/Nightmare, with Flora as the presiding Great One, and the hunter as the infant, or surrogate infant Great One, depending on the ending. I suppose that would leave the question of who or what the lost children of those great ones were. Perhaps I'm overthinking it.

Why couldn't Annalise have been the betrayer? She's the only one we see with regenerative qualities, and as the first of the Vileblood line, the one with the purest of the Vileblood, (being that she would have been the first of them) it makes sense that she would have abilities no other Vileblood had. Such as the ability to regenerate from even a pile of flesh. She is the last of the Vilebloods as well, indicating that the others didn't have that regeneration. And considering the gender neutral change, it's possible the scholar that betrayed Bergenwerth was a woman who realized what kind of power she could gain from the 'forbidden' blood. What better way to become queen of the Vilebloods than become the first and strongest?

I don't think Maria can be the one who brought forbidden blood back to Cainhurst. I don't recall the exact line, but it's stated that Maria is a distant relative of the Queen, and implies that's the result of her blood magic. If we assume that blood powers are a result of being Vilebloods and hers specifically are a result of being related to the Queen, then I would expect the theft of forbidden blood to have occurred some time before her birth. Does that logic make sense?

+IethargicAnarchist +ZethUDSRakSDAL Yeah, the first person that came to my mind when Vaati was explaining the thief was the Queen herself, who perhaps stole the blood and used it on herself to become Queen of Cainhurst. I think it's in the Cainhurst armor description that states that the entire Cainhurst court was based around gaining her favour so the Queen might bless you with more of her blood.
@IethargicAnarchist
@IethargicAnarchist 8 жыл бұрын
+Zizara 42 It would make sense for her to be 'patient zero' in this case, since she's the only one who was immortal (presumably, unless the Church has a closet full of pureed Vilebloods somewhere which frankly I would not put past them) and therefore probably the one with the strongest strain of this special blood. As for whether she stole the blood or somebody did it for her, we may never know for sure.
@bubbasbigblast8563

+IethargicAnarchist It also doesn't make any sense that the Church would have a traitor guard it's biggest secret, or that Maria would betray Gherman. While we're at it, the Queen also says outright that you and her are the last two of their kind, so it's very doubtful that the person who stole the blood is still alive...

battletoads22 It was propbaly changed due to much more obvious and leave less for imagination. But it does in fact have a very different meaning. I interpreted it like this, replace the word blood with power, or knowledge and its super obvious what it means. Its all about evolution, evolving into the next plane and level of existence. Very Lovecraftian.
@battletoads22
@battletoads22 8 жыл бұрын
Watch crap There's also the fact that a "loss of humanity" is generally regarded as a negative. Not usually evolution or transcendence. And typically in literature and legend, if a living thing isn't human when it should be a human, it is essentially a monster. Or a beast. We typically think of "beast" meaning an animal, but "beast", like "serpent", is actually really ambiguous and just means "something savage". And people in Bloodborne who use the blood are turned into beasts, just like how the player character's beasthood increases with blood vial usage (I think).

"the grave belongs to a man" going to say the 'he' used in the bone's description could of been what is used in england known as the 'generic he' when speaking about someone vaguely, he is used in place of they and their and even he and she, a lot of people in my city use generic he, which has existed since the 18th century and was the more polite way of referring to someone in speech. sometimes even in game designs if something (if the setting is in olden times) uses he to describe something that turns out to be female then the he used was a generic he, for the vagueness, even if the person is male the fact the gender isn't known to use until we see them also means the generic he is in use.

A couple thoughts on this video. -The Old Hunter's tombstone not only has a real-world counterpart, it's the _only_ tombstone in the Abandoned Old Workshop in the real world. Frankly I don't think there's any doubt the tombstone is Maria's. I think the only reason the localization team gave the description a male pronoun is because they didn't know at the time that it belonged to Maria, so they used "he" because male terms are still default in most people's minds. -I don't think Maria brought the forbidden blood to Cainhurst. The item description of the Rakuyo mentions that she never really liked using blood blades, so I think it's a safe assumption that she tried to distance herself from her Vileblood relations when she was alive. -"Flora" is really just a term to mean the non-plant life that resides in a certain area, and one of the notes in the Lecture Building says "the nameless moon presence." Personally I think the Moon Presence doesn't have a name (at least not one that anyone ever discovered), but that's obviously open for speculation.

+Darth Yoda I agree on Maria not being the one that betrayed Willem too. Rakuyo and her equipment description gave me a strong impression she rather resented Cainhurst (Vileblood) and admired/respected Gehrman as a hunter - but maybe more involved or strongly affiliated with the Church than Gehrman was. (I felt that Gehrman was helping Laurence as a friend, but maybe not that interested in the Church itself? Not quite sure why though) Still seems like that Cainhurst Crow is still most likely, maybe by the order of the queen or her family who were very influential around Yharnam not mentioned in the video but his use of Chikage as well. I assume Maria either either defected from Cainhurst to the Church, or maybe joined the Church at very young age, after the Vilebloods were established? Just the impression I got of the story so I'm not saying this is it :S

+MidnightatMidian I was about to point out that the flowers have the "lumen" prefix, but I was confusing "lumen" with "luna" in terms of what I thought it means. That said, "lumen" is a measure of light, and this is the _night_ of the hunt, so the only real sources of light people would have would be either fire, or the moon and stars. So I do think there's a definite connection between the flowers and the moon.

Thank god the translators were allowed a little creative freedom. Can you imagine what the game would have been like with the clunky writing and awful stilted dialogue of the typical JRPG? A large part of Bloodborne and Souls games appeal is the fantastic writing. Frognation deserve a hell of a lot of credit for bring Myasaki's vision to life for English speaking audiences and From deserve a lot of credit for allowing them enough leeway to write genuinely high quality prose. Having said that, it's still interesting from a lore perspective to hear the more literal interpretations, thanks for the vid :)

The Old Hunter Bone potentially belonging to Maria only reinforces my earlier idea that she is the host of the nightmare, just as Gherman is the host of the hunter's dream and Miccolash is the host for the nightmare of Mensis. If that is her bone, then that's her grave, just as Vaati said. We use that grave to access the hunter's nightmare.
@Jojoinspaace
@Jojoinspaace 8 жыл бұрын
+Logan Hicks I didn't necessarily mean them being the host of the nightmare meant they were having the dream. It's a little more complicated than that. Lady Maria, Miccolash, and Gherman are all long dead, but we meet their consciousnesses within their respective dream/nightmare. I think being the host of the nightmare, in simple terms, means being prisoner to a great one. Gherman was a surrogate child of the Moon Presence. The Orphan of Kos, referred to as the "wizened child", would have no need for a child of it's own considering it is still a child. What did the orphan lose? Obviously, his mother. This is a stretch, but perhaps Lady Maria is a surrogate mother to the Orphan of Kos. If all great ones lose their children and yearn for surrogates, who's to say that a great one that loses it's mother might not also yearn for a surrogate?
@Jojoinspaace
@Jojoinspaace 8 жыл бұрын

+SweetTaLe Perhaps some phrases are common enough in japanese to still be cryptic, while in english it would be too obvious? I don't know japanese, that would be just a guess, maybe they're actually preserving some of the original intention, even if they do screw up some times. For example, the literal translation of Maria's dialogue doesn't even give you enough time to connect the two things. Most people came to the conclusion that "A corpse should be left well alone" was in fact a reference not only to the state you find her in, but also (mostly) the carcass of Kos, even if the description was a lot more vague. Maybe the term they use for "corpse fishing" makes more sense to be up in the air until you connect the dots yourself.

Watching the video is, I think it serves as an indication of how different interpretations of English have spread across the world. All of the Japanese translations mean the same thing to me in English as you presented them here. To give a few examples: Rom, the Vacuous spider; here the word "vacuous" means empty headed, so it is equivalent to saying dumb or retarded. (I used to use this as an insult sometimes) the wizened child also means the same as a child grown old as wizened is often used in English to describe someone who is very old ("wizened old man") tinge means a tendency towards some color, vis red in the context, therefore it means the same thing as quality. etc etc I don't wanna spend too much time going over it but the significant translation errors seem to be almost exclusively related to gender and inflection. So what I'm getting at is that this is a very well translated souls game, by comparison the previous ones, and, also, its interesting to see that though we both speak English its not necessarily the same language
@neron8497
@neron8497 8 жыл бұрын
+Riaan VDW vacuous also meaning stupid, yes, but it carries less of the connotation of an insult that the Japanese term clearly does. Wizened I agree with, it means shrivelled or wrinkled with age, so. Tinge, I think you're reaching. How red the blood is, doesn't necessarily give an indication of its quality. Therefore the original clear meaning of the word is entirely lost, and left up to speculation, whereas it's direct in the Japanese. For a game like Souls where details are everything, I think that's not good. So I disagree with you that these translation choices aren't significant. They mostly are.

Man, so many people in this comment section are bitching as if it's a crime that there are discrepancies between English and Japanese translations of the game. If someone is translating Japanese to English, it's their job to preserve as much of the original meaning as possible WHILE making the translation palatable for English speakers. It's a balancing act, and sometimes things get lost in order to maintain aesthetic quality. I mean really, are the English speakers in here really so pissed that we didn't get to fight "Rom, the Retarded Spider"? Or have Maria talk to us about "rummaging through a corpse"? Those literal translations would have been completely immersion-breaking for English speakers. Besides, videos like this one are here to fill in the gaps without forcing the devs to lower to quality of the game, so what are you crying about.

When it comes to Maria betraying the Hunters for the sake of Cainhurst. you can see somethings that hints for that before you initiate the fight, near her body is a cup (a chalice if you may) that is filled with blood, maybe her resentment towards her origins died down or something like that? a lot of things can be interpretted from this, like maybe she was the first to become a vileblood? dunno

Aight, crazy theory time. Just speculation so far, but who knows. Before the events of Buttborne, you're not a Hunter because you haven't had your shot in the arm of Space Kool-Aid. Your character was involved with the church, Byrgenwerth, or both, and was present when shiznizzle went south and the beast plague dropped like a corpse out of an airplane. The PC also witnessed the ibble bibble bibble levels of insanity that often resulted from unmanaged Insight/Enlightenment, such as with the creation of the Celestail Emissaries (probably the last act of the official Choir) and whatever fantastic drugs Micolash has been doing all day. Whether it was an attempt ot stop the plague, an accidental infection of tainted blood, or maybe even a panicked grab for power and survival, the PC decides to undergo Kool-Aid transfusion and become a Hunter. Two things of note. Number one, Transfusion Wheelchair Guy [TM] has the Old Hunter Top Hat, tying him to the OG kush Hunters in some unclear way. Number two, your knowledge of Old Squeaky and his +2 IV Drip of Plot Device (as well as previous contact with the church, Byrgenwerth, and/or giant space monsters) lets you know you'll get memory-wiped when you enter the "dream"/"nightmare," so you leave yourself the Paleblood note with just enough info to start the Kill The Gods ball rolling, but not enough to mire you in insanity from too much revelation at once. Too much insight, I'm ibble bibble-ing. Bed.

Localization and translation are rarely done as teams. Usually, it's independent freelancers translators working on smaller or larger bits of text. Most localization clients get to review the translation for quality and meaning before making payment, so some of the translation "errors" could have been explicitly accepted by FromSoft
@KnowsN0thing468
@KnowsN0thing468 8 жыл бұрын
You have to admit that many of the translations are more elegant than any literal or direct translation. Given Miyazaki's love for riddles and cryptic storytelling, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the obfuscation introduced in the translations were intentional.

But i guess it is not that bad either considering it kind of becomes an even harder challenge to interpret the game compared to the japanese audience, which can be fun in its own right :)

One of the cool details about Maria is that we now know who the classic Hunters Hat is modelled after. It's her hat - she's got the feather and everything. It's such a throwaway line on an unimportant item and they didn't forget about it, they referenced it in the DLCs design.

Great series. I love having the lore exposited so neatly more or less. I would like to clarify that the altar where ebrietas resides was actually a church member who she gave eldritch knowledge to, but they were unable to comprehend it and became transformed into a rom-like being. I believe it has minor time manipulation powers, which is why I think that if you bring the piece of Annalise to it after her destruction she is reconstructed as she was before Alfred finds her. I'm not sure where I read/heard about this piece of lore, but I'm fairly sure I represented it in a decent capacity, and hope that you can find the original and validate/expand upon what I remembered from it. The sheer depth of the lore in these games is staggering, and I can only hope for you to make more videos explaining how it all ties together. Sad to say I'm impatient, but you do it so well that I suppose waiting isn't all bad. Cheers mate.

They should have a more time at FROM to let translations be done properly. Its been the one recurring problem so far, lore should be done and translated right. Even 1 one word can change a meaning altogether.
@neron8497
@neron8497 8 жыл бұрын
+Magneasy93 It's an inevitable part of the production process, they're made in Japanese and then a certain budget is assigned to translate it to English via out-sourcing. FROM employees likely don't have a solid grasp of English nor the time to verify if the translations were cohesive with the lore. So it's just accepted as-is. I doubt FROM know of any of the unfortunate translation choices made for the Souls localizations. *Edit: this isn't entirely correct, my mistake. In the case of the localizations done by Frognation they did/do communicate and work with them over time. (Source: EpicNameBro's Dark Chat +1 video where he discusses Frognation). However, the point about From Soft's grasp on English remains the same.

+Magneasy93 The translation is done properly, it's among the best Japanese to English translations in the business. From work closely with a company called Frognation made up of various bilingual native Japanese and English speakers, the same team that did the Souls games which only had English audio. Nothing in the final English version hasn't been given the OK by Miyasaki, the translations are creative decisions not mistakes.

Barak Bullock I was under the impression that Miyazaki-san wasn't, and isn't fluent in English. We know he's read English literature as a child, but that he couldn't understand a lot of it. That is pretty suprising actually, I live i Poland and i have played the entire game in English because i was afraid of the bad translation (japanese>english>polish), but now i checked it and WOW, the polish translation is a lot closer to japanese than the english one. Its not saying anything about gender where its mentioned in the english version, refering more to a "human" than a man or woman. Well... looks like i am gonna play the game again reading everything. Ron in the polish version i called "Rom, Tępy pająk" - "Rom, The blunt spider" and blunt in polish language is a way of calling someone stupid, as opposite to sharp - being clever.

I would question the idea that One Reborn is better translated as "Ones Reborn". According to real japanese dictionaries (like 大辞泉), 再誕 (the word for resurrection in the name), is not at all exclusively for schools, companies or groups. In fact, the definition is very general, just meaning "something which was dead coming back to life". The word seems to be used for buddhist resurrection for example. My guess is that Loremaster Nojah got translation from JMdict, which is a good but not amazing source.

The use of Japanese to English translation is inspiring. Especially when knowing that you already spend so much time and energy in creating these lore videos. I know you've mentioned cutting the Bloodborne lore videos, however, they have been entertaining and this youtuber would definitively continue watching them. Your videos have taught so much about this game that would've never been brought to the light otherwise. You've cleared out the illusory walls of the story.

Micolash states that Kos is also known as Kosm... It's not far fetched to think of Cosmos. Is this also due to Translation? Would it be possible to writ Kos with C instead of K? This would make Ebrietas, Daughter of Cosmos and The Orphan of Kos siblings! Sure, they don't look alike - but the orphan was just recently born while Ebrietas is very old (or their father isn't the same :p ). Any thoughts on my theory?

Localization is quite difficult, especially from Japanese, and other East Asian languages, to English. Neither have a shared history and thus they have very few semantic references. In the industry, Japanese is the hardest to translate from.

+DahliasDarkside Altar of Despair does not have the same meaning. Lamentation or grief has a different connotation than despair. Lamentation at least, suggests a direct cause for sorrow, which the word despair lacks.

+neron I agree with your point that lamentation/grief offer more context than despair, but I also think anyone who took the time to look at Ebrietas and consider what she is doing there would be able to infer that she is grieving. The Altar of Despair is definitely one of the less consequential mistranslations IMO

Descripting Rom as idiotic resembles me of Azathoth from Lovecraft. Azathoth is referred as "blind idiot-god", he is floating abyss surrounded by lesser gods dancing to his flute. Check out this quote: "[O]utside the ordered universe [is] that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity-the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes." Azathoth is most powerful of outer gods, able to create and destroy universes with his flute. Also Azathoth is parent of Nyarlathotep "the Nameless Mist and Darkness" (also called "crawling chaos" and "faceless god") and I wonder if it links Rom to Mergo's wet nurse.

+VaatiVidya Great video as usual man. So I noticed something recently that i don't think anyone has pointed out yet. In my most recent run through the forbidden woods i decided to take a closer look at the giant graves in the shadows of Yharnum Boss Room and i started thinking the shape above the lettering looks like a barnacle so i looked even closer and to my surprise, the entire back of the giant grave looks like its covered in those flammable slugs that are all over the ground in the fishing hamlet and possibly fishing nets carved in stone. I'm not sure what this could mean lore wise but with the forbidden graves so close to Bergenwerth I thought i should let you know what with their connection to the fishing hamlet maybe you could figure out whose graves they are now =). Keep doing your thing man. P.S. really sorry about the double comment. my youtube comments have been disapearing on any video recently unless i leave two. Again, sorry about that. Show less
