One of my favourite aspects about Djura is the fact he is one of the only NPCS's in a souls game, to recognize the player character is immortal. "Come as often as you like, and I will show you another death" If I knew my enemy would come back from the dead every time I killed him, I'd probably go mad with depression. But not Djura. He welcomes the challenge and dares you to come fight him again. What a badass :)

I'd like to add, from the description of the burial blade (Gehrman's weapon), there are hunters who view the hunt as a "last goodbye" kind of thing. They understand and recognize the beasts as former humans, who are now reduced to nothing but animal instinct, their humanity gone, thirsty for blood. And therefore, they oblige to put them out of their misery, to keep sane people from harm as well, however they still show respect for their victims, much like an undertaker would do with the deceased. A blood-drunk hunter and a beast are not different, they are both out for blood. Eileen takes care of the former, and she does so with uttermost respect as well, going so far as to even giving her marks a sky burial (which is implied to be something sacred done in the foreign land where she is from) instead of nailing them to a cross and burning them, like yharnamites do. And also, i remark on the parallel between Djura and Maria. They both feel for the victims of the healing church, and remain behind, guarding their own share of land, protecting it from the curious that wish to explore it. But in the end, their self-imposed punishment is counterproductive. Maria gatekeeps the only path to the source of the nightmare, but her actions only further the suffering of many innocent hunters who had nothing to do with the fishing hamlet massacre, and had the misfortune of drinking too much tainted blood (ministered by the healing church themselves) all while oblivious of the great scheme of things. Simon himself agrees that it isn't fair. Djura maintains the peace in old yharnam, but we can see from exploring the place that there are some blindspots where weird things are going on, first and foremost is the beasts holding some sort of ritual in the church just behind him. They even have ritual blood ready on the altar. Not to mention, the huge blood-starved beast hanging from the ceiling and splattering the floor with blood. As many people had remarked, the beasts in old yharnam are starving. Yeah, they might be safe from the hunters above, but that doesn't mean they aren't suffering. Djura, much like Maria, is only furthering that suffering. Acts of good aren't always wise.

@dannylamb4569 жыл бұрын
The Darkness In addition, as much as I love automatic weapons, this is a game where guns are merely supplements to your blade/hammer/melee weapon. A machine gun would be a little odd to use for Bloodborne, I think, though I'd love to see a From Software Game with a main focus on firearms and swords/melee being the supplement for once. And now I'll brace for the hate.
@thedarkness62569 жыл бұрын
The powder keggers were different in that they focused on thee fire power aspects of beast hunting, they made a hand cannon, a spear with blunderbuss on it, and a stake, driven by a controlled explosion. Their motto," If a weapon ain't got kick, it ain't worth it." A Gatling gun isn't exactly the automatic weapon you're thinking of, as they were originally stationary, hand cranked installations. WHile this one is mobile, you wouldn't be able to move while firing the thing, it's melee is incredibly slow in comparison to the rest. It was designed to fight massive beasts. While I can appreciate the fast paced combat, when I first saw this thing in it's intended form, I thought, well, I am going to at least blast the hell out of a beasty and then smash it's friggin head!

The difference between a beast and a man, is that a man can be reasoned with. Anything that will attack you at the mere sight of you is a beast. The people you meet, who seek your aid are not beasts. You yourself are not a beast, because you can be convinced to help them. The line between man and beast may be blurred... but it is not invisible.
@kasadeya37549 жыл бұрын
+Kazuma - kun perhaps, but is the human flesh warped by blood, mind ravaged by madness, still another soul to be released from agony? The beasts need to die this is certain but do not we hunters as well, the hunters nightmare seem to hint that in the end a hunter is but beast turned on its own kind that in the end all a hunter will be is beast in blood armed with weapons of men, and with the soul of kin. Monsters transcendent but monsters all the same.
@Kazuma112909 жыл бұрын
The Director If that's true then every living thing, Hunter or beast, child or Great One, are all monsters. Bloodborne as a game isn't just stating it's own lore, it's suggesting an ideal. They're asking "where do you draw the line between man and monster", and testing you to see if you cross your own boundaries. You are the only person who can decide the difference.

I would add that the "prepare to cry" for Djura is even more sad. Djura recognizes the player is immortal: "Come as often as you like, and I will show you another death". He stands, steadfast, as protector of those who had been forsaken and left to die. He knows the beasts do not wish to hurt central Yharnam, and so he gives his life to protect them. And this is the most tragic part of his tale: Knowing that the player will not rest, Djura faces a ceaseless enemy, doing his best to protect the wretches below. Finally, you are able to overcome Djura, and he loses his life to an enemy he can never hope to stop permanently while attempting to protect those who have lost everything. This is only made worse if you talk to Djura first and agree to save the beasts. He may feel that finally he has an ally, only to be betrayed in the end.

Just a thought. Couldn't it be that the powder kegs were declared heretics AFTER they were sent to Old Yharnam? I mean, there is no mention of when exactly they are established as heretics and even in the Old Hunters DLC, the old workshop badge that is referred to as a predecessor to the powder kegs, refers to them as heretics of sorts. In my opinion, the powder kegs were once respected, if a bit odd people of the workshop, working together with the other hunters efficiently. But then the Old Yharnam Beast Incident happened and somebody was needed to be sent down to combat the hordes of wolfmen and women. Since the beasts could be best combated with fire and the powder kegs used the most destructive and fire based weapons, they were sent down to the by then lit ablaze old city to clear it of beasts. But, as we see, this just proved as too much of a task and they never returned. But, as we know, the one hunter Djura remained. I imagine maybe a search party was sent down into the ruined city to look for a still living powder keg and, well, they found him. Perched atop a tower, aiming a minigun at them and telling them to flock off or else. I imagine after Djura chased them back out of the city, they reported to the church, which declared the powder kegs, or, what remained of them, to be heretics, betrayers and most likely enemies of the church as well. At least this is my opinion of the things.

@praxis57888 жыл бұрын
late reply, but: My theory is that Djura and some of the powder kegs had a crisis of faith while purging old yahrnam, and decided to switch sides and try to protect the beasts. Remember, there's another hunter below Djura's tower who fights you alongside the beasts. The surviving powder kegs would then be excommunicated, since "beast hunting is holy work," and protecting beasts would be heresy.
@vaspeter26008 жыл бұрын
And, from what we can tell, Djura was the only Hunter of the Dream, and even he stopped dreaming by the point you come along. It must be horrible to see your comrades fall one by one in a neverending siege while you just keep reviving after every mistake. I assume he only took the machine gun when there was no one left who wished to stay alive of the Powder Kegs. Also, now you know that some good people died in the protecion of the beasts you've been slaying there. Because, you know, Souls games.

@Ghost11708 жыл бұрын
Djura's dialogue is confirmed now. Well, least I see it as confirmed. The reason why I believe so is because in the old hunter's DLC, maybe this was fucking obvious, idk, but some beasts there don't want to fight you, they're actually fucking terrified of you. I think this is when they first started transforming, kinda like a zombie apocalypse, but a beast one and you're aware. Now imagine you're a newly transformed beast, have no idea what's going on, and suddenly, the people who were suppose to protect you, aka the church, sends hunters to kill you. Civilians will likely be terrified at first, but after a while of straight up murder, the towns folk, who are beasts mostly now, will fucking fight back. And I think when the curse started spreading, it only got enhanced by emotion; hate and sorrow. Think about it! Every beast boss has lost their minds to anger/hate/sorrow and you can tell by how they act. Actually, maybe I'm tin foiling too hard here because I wouldn't know how to talk about Gascogne. Maybe he was rekt by guilt? And his mind just slowly went into madness and when you fight him, diasjdioasjiodjias. I'm just theory crafting at this point, but my original argument still stands that: Djura speaks the truth; hunters are the beasts.
@ThrottleKitty8 жыл бұрын
The beasts in the hunter's nightmare act like that because the hunters there are stuck on a torturous nightmare version of hunting beasts. They aren't "real" versions of the beasts. However, the point behind it is still valid, that which hunts beasts is always a bigger beast.
@Ghost11708 жыл бұрын
Throttle Kitty Really? Could you source that for me, I really want to confirm it before I see it as that. It would make sense though, hence the name of the DLC, "Hunter's Nightmare". But I do agree with your last point.
@ThrottleKitty8 жыл бұрын
Ghost1170 Well, confirming anything in bloodborne is hard to be honest. The nightmare is described as "the nightmare of blood drunk hunters" - and since the beasts that act this way only exist in this place, and I think simon's dialogue hints at it as well.

@lilpotayto9 жыл бұрын
Ze-TopHat-Gamer Djura seems to be more of the opinion that the inhabitants of Old Yharnum have suffered enough by the hands of the Workshop and the Church and deserve solace as they're no harm to anyone outside the ruins of the burned districts. He doesn't seem convinced that there could be a cure so much as he's had enough of watching people brutally murdered and tortured by blood-crazed and sadistic hunters who have no reason to enter the old districts in the first place.
@Thenextworldwar9 жыл бұрын
If you think about it, in a lot of ways, the beasts seem to be trying to civilize themselves. They have a church, their raggedy clothes are roughly tailored to their new bodies, and the fact that they attack you seems more because they know what you'll do if you're allowed to go any further (slaughter and maim many). The worst thing they seem to do is perform rituals on Blood-Starved Beasts, which is nowhere near as bad as what the Healing Church has been doing.
@chrisschoenthaler51847 жыл бұрын
I feel like you’re a bit mistaken. The beasts with clothing and weapons are simply beasts that have yet to fully turn. They have partially transformed into feral beasts, and some still retain a bit of their minds, but they are still turning into feral monsters, not the other way around. Lingering traces of humanity are not a sign of the beasts trying to become civilized, but the fading echoes of who they once were.

If paleblood really is the red moon as some hints suggest, then maybe the Moon Presence is not just behind the Hunters Dream but the hunt itself, maybe it's even responsible for the beastplague itself, it is the taint of the blood. If that is true the point of the hunt is to make a hunter powerful enough to kill a great one, like in DS to make an undead strong enough to kindle the flame.
@420PraiseIt9 жыл бұрын
***** But the dream exists for the hunt to be successful through a skillful and powerful hunter. Therefore the dream and the hunt are the same thing, so of course, the moon presence is behind both. About the second sentence of yours, it is believed that the old gods are in war. The child we hear is nowhere to be found in the nightmare, we hear only its cries. Mergo is also not matterialised. Oedon is the formless god. in conclusion, the moon presence orchistrated this to "overthrow" another great one's grasp to "our world". Each god has a surrogate, we are moon's presence surrogate "beating" the surrogate of Oedon. But with the true ending we also ascend. Anyway, it's too long to type and I cba atm.

Djura stopped me progressing for a while. Not because he was hard to get past, but because after listening to him and understanding what he was saying, I became conflicted about what I thought. I still thought that the Beasts were my enemies, that they would mindlessly kill, but I also realized that I was doing the same thing. And I just didn't feel like killing them anymore. It was really strange.

The fact that Gehrman wears the charred set is why I believe he was part of the purge that took place in old Yharnam. I believe the powder kegs methods and ways were the reason why they were easier to target and blame for what happened, but I think EVERY hunter was part of the Old Yharnam massacre. Think about it, a whole town transformed and overrun by beasts; it should have taken more than a couple of cannons to stop

My thing with is that I understand his plight, but I still see him as a naive person because he doesn't see that these beasts will attack anything that's not a fellow beast. If I see a person being attacked by the beasts, I won't hesitate to kill those beasts in order to save that person. I believe that Djura, on the other hand, would try to save those people without killing the beasts, but I don't he will succeed.
@riviacchad85138 жыл бұрын
Nah, Djura is right, old Yharnam has already burned to cinders and have no humans left. There is no point in killing beast since there were once human and have no one to attack and kill, hunters coming to kill have lost the purpose of the hunt as they are hurting beast with no prey. Don't kill a shark if you don't go into it's waters
@ryrin60918 жыл бұрын
There are no humans in Old Yharnam (besides Djura obviously) and you don't ever have to actually go there to beat the game. From a story standpoint, you really are just hunting for the sake of hunting if you go there.
@3DSDF8 жыл бұрын
Ryan J True, but it is my job. And has there been accounts where the beast-turn can be reversed? If not, then killing these poor saps can be seen as a form of mercy, like with how people want to be killed before becoming a zombie.
@ryrin60918 жыл бұрын
3DSDF Perhaps, but I don't think the beasts would see it as mercy. Even if they only have base instincts left. We don't even know if the beasts are suffering. At least we don't know if they're all suffering. A large group of beasts in Old Yharnam even appeared to be holding some type of organized gathering. That would suggest some level of thought beyond that of a mindless animal. It makes sense they attack you on sight, even if they haven't lost their minds yet. Hunters have been hunting and killing beats for years without mercy. They'll assume any hunter they see is going to kill them.
@3DSDF8 жыл бұрын
Ryan J True, but I again compare it with zombies where we don't know if they are suffering but we still kill them without hesitation. Though you may be right about the gathering. The cannibalistic beggar was able to retain some of his mindset after becoming a beats, and Ludwig did the same once he saw the Moonlight Blade.

After killing Djura and subsequently looking him up on my first runthrough, I made a new game and started over. Not really delving into lore theories or anything, Eileen and Djura were two of my favorite characters right away. They're both hunters and they both have totally different perspectives on the hunt. I felt not so much that Djura had his change of heart after he saw the hunters went too far, but that he came to the realization that the beasts were people. It seems obvious since we see some transformations but I feel like as a solider and not in on the ground floor like geherman he might have just been told the beasts we're monsters and that's that. coming to the realization that they're human and defending them and the city is amazing and he might be the most noble character we encounter in a sense. One of my other favorites is Micolash [probably because I'd just been digging into a bunch of lovecraft] but he confused the hell out of me as far as the story and dream are concerned. Had me thinking at a point that the "hunter dream" was the only reality even. As far as I can tell his "dream self" is somehow who we are fighting, because of his dialogue panic about waking up and forgetting, which is a lovecraftian theme too [so is letting your physical body die and letting your dream self live on, and traversing from the dream realm to the waking world...also a dream being "possessing" a mortal and speaking through them ie patches]. But being the host of the nightmare maybe we could have tapped into his "hunter dream" as it were, which might explain the deformed birds and whatnot. i really am not sure! i'm sure there's lore theory on this guy, i'm curious what your take is!

Now after The Old Hunters, Djura's beliefs kind of makes sense to me. He is an old (powder keg) hunter. Djura was more dangerous than a fool, he was a naive idealist. It's like a doctor who quits saving lives because he might one day need a doctor, or might accidentally kill someone. The fact is, unless every human you meet is a beast, the people who are transformed most likely cant be changed back. They are no longer people. Doesn't matter how cute and cuddly they used to be, they still rip little girls to shreds. They still attack on sight. No amount of mental gymnastics changes this fact. The fact that you are helpless in the face of cosmic might, or that you might become a beast, doesn't automatically remove the need to save people like the little girl from beasts like her father.
@lilpotayto9 жыл бұрын
Anduin Arilan But, as Djura says, Old Yharnum now belongs to the beasts anyway. The people there were manipulated, infected by a plague, lied to, infected by another plague, had their homes burned to the ground and are now hunted and tortured by invaders. The bodies of beasts strung up around the city show that many weren't given a clean death. Djura isn't an idealist. Quite the opposite. He's a man so disillusioned by how fucked everyone and everything is that he'd rather let the beasts of old Yharnum be in peace than allow some bloodthirsty hunter who is just as deranged and has no real reason to be there continue the torment of the Old Yharnamites who have suffered enough. His opinion seems less that beasts have as much a right to live as humans than it is that the humans of Central Yharnum and the Church are no less monstrous than the beasts they hunt.
@ianplunkett71049 жыл бұрын
We don't know for a fact that there isn't a way for beasts to become human again. Look at the Suspicious Beggar, he seemed to be able to control his form to a certain extent. Also, the Beast Claw allowed people to change only a certain part of their body into a beast and they had control over when that happened. It isn't too outlandish to think that a cure to Beasthood could exist since there are devices and people that can literally control their Beasthood.
@andurilan9 жыл бұрын
There isnt a single human we met that could control their Beasthood that didnt attack you, so they are Beasts, regardless of their level of control of it. Did you meet anyone who partook in Blood and who turned into beasts who didnt attack someone?

Ian Plunkett yea guys I gotta agree with Anduin. I mean look at the walking dead or zombie stuff in general, they always have that moment where a character faces or is overpowered by a zombie that was once a family member meanwhile before they already knew "Once that person changes it is no longer who you knew that person is gone" Now I'm not trying to make myself out to be a badass because I know if my mom changed I'd most like die being eaten alive by her but simple fact is in most science fictions and fantasies rarely has cured popped up for beastly/zombie conditions and 9/10 the person who has changed is un redeemable now I understand the whole healing church thing was fucked up but I feel little pain for the present "citizens of old yharnam" because the "citizens" are sadly no longer people "There all just flesh hungry beasts now..."-Eileen 2015
