Bloodborne released in 2015 and it was great!
But did you know it had a story?
And LORE!
And that the lore was partially lost in translation?
In this video, me and channel friend Lokey dive deep into the translation we got, and into a more proper translation to understand what was lost in translation.
Hope you have some time to kill, because this one is a beast! :D

I believe it was in an interview that Miyazaki revealed your healthbar doesn't actually represent physical health necessarily. Instead it's refering to your motivation, your drive to move forward and to end the nightmare. I know it's unintuitive especially considering how the game literally says "YOU DIED" when your healthbar reaches zero but the idea he pushes in here is that you weren't really killed but rather pulled by the Moon Presence to the dream to avoid death. This is also supported by the way with which the rally mechanic works. It's called *rally* for this reason in which you regain your motivation to move forward by hitting back against the monsters that are inflicting this damage to your fortitude. This is why it also works on the enemies after they're dead and in their dying animation. In this sense what the blood vials are doing principally is numbing you to the pain to aid in restoring your drive by getting more blooddrunk in a sense.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 2 жыл бұрын
It is death, but the moon presence steps in and eases your mind enough that you can recover. Your body, as I understand it, is just as durable as the beasts. Your wounds will close quickly, even if they should be fatal. What has a hard time recovering is your willpower. All the pain and stress unnerves you. So anything that banishes the pain and the memory of the trauma will restore you. The item description of blood vials makes it clear it is euphoric to take blood. That the rush is something many come to crave.

Hi Aesir!! I'm a big of your work I've been watching your videos since your Silent hill 2 video and that was the first time I felt like I completely understood a game from every angle and that's a feeling I very rarely get from youtube analysis videos. Starting last year I binged all of the Fromsoft games( except for dark souls 2 and Sekiro) in preparation for my playthrough of Elden ring. since then I've been captivated by the lore of these games which led to me watching all of your videos on them. I've noticed that out of all the games you seem to be particularly fascinated with the lore of bloodborne seeing how it's the Fromsoft game that has the most lore dedicated videos on the channel. With that information in mind I would like to give give you the ability to completely understand Bloodborne and I think I've found something that might do the trick.... Behold the holy chalice of all blood borne lore hunters, a recent analysis series called The True Story of Bloodborne by the channel Charred Thermos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGbOm2WEaaaBr6c . This is unlike anything you've seen before covering Bloodborne, it covers almost every aspect of the game through a surprisingly applicable and undiscussed lens that reveals far more about the story of the game, Miyazaki's creative process, and the themes of the game. I wouldn't and can't say we've solved everything with this series(there are some conclusions I don't exactly agree with, mainly some in the final two videos) but it definitely feels like this series has uncovered a colossal milestone in understanding the game almost as if we've found the Rosetta Stone for Bloodborne. I'm very curious to see what you think about all of this especially because I have seen almost no one acknowledge this on youtube as of the time of commenting this and I'd like to see these concepts spread in the discourse. If I am right in how I'm perceiving the information in this information this could not only lead to the explanation of bloodborne but will also redefine how we analyze the other Miyazaki era Fromsoft games. I should also say that I apologize in advance for making you and your lore colleagues do more research and possibly making more videos on Fromsoft Games seeing how you only recently uploaded a non-Fromsoft video as of 2 weeks ago

Mmm, interesting idea.. I wonder then, if the "end of the game" is triggered by killing the Wet Nurse. As if our goal, given by Flora, was to get rid of the Great One that answered first when summoned by Micolash and took Mergo. We might not even kill the baby! As Yharnam, waiting outside, could recover it! Silencing it might not actually mean killing it.. but returning it to the mother, so as to be where he is supposed to be instead of crying when kidnapped.

Lol, yeah this is a tvery random and inconsequential point which people either agree with or not, I totally get that if you look at his face he's still very much an old man but I've been browbeaten by my people enough that I'm in the "he becomes younger" crowd. The arguments go that: If you watch the DLC trailer you'll see Gehrman in the Fishing Hamlet wearing the same getup he switches to when he becomes a boss and if we assume that that was his getup 20~ years ago, it fits that he's become younger. There's also other instances of people becoming younger in dreams (Brador, Micolash) to support him doing it and his face (on the model) has very awkwardly been stretched over the body of a different character, meaning it's hard to use his in-game model as a gauge for his actual age. Thank you for sticking around the video long enough to get to that part tho, sorry about all the creaking sounds in the background :D

This was really interesting. I didn't fully understand what a 'blood baby' is as referenced with Annalise (and maybe Queen Yharnam). Is it just the successful version of bearing a great one's child, or is it something else?
@BrettFairchild
@BrettFairchild Жыл бұрын
Yeah the idea is that in whatever way or form it had to take, they wanted to deliver a child to a great one in exchange for gifts or a deal or some kind. Whether it was a human child with special blood, some experiment, some monstrosity, they wanted to be able to provide "a child" for them like they wanted. Mergo was the closest they ever got to presenting one after using the chalices to take it, but the Wet Nurse swooped in and claimed it before the others. They tried making a deal with the wet nurse in exchange for eyes by forgoing Mergo, but that didn't go as planned either...haha

Bit of a doozy but I'm entirely confused about Lokey's interpretation of the Nightmare of Mensis. The School of Mensis really has no established presence in the Nightmare of Mensis. The idea that the Nightmare is their base of operations is only based on the fact that Micolash's corpse is mummified, but that could likely be just a product of the nightmarish setting. There's no evidence that they were actively performing experiments there. The Brain of Mensis is likely the malformed, conjoined brain of Mensis Scholars. The English says it was "retrieved" in the nightmare, but the Japanese is more like "gained" in the Nightmare. Micolash is feverishly running through a library "asking Kos to grant them eyes" (or more literally just asking the cosmos to grant them "Eldritch knowledge"). It makes more sense to me is the Nightmare of Mensis being a figmental Pthumerian castle facilitated by the will of Mergo. Mergo's Attendants, the Shadows of Yharnam, and Mergo's Wet Nurse were all once servants of Queen Yharnam and her child of blood. The events surrounding Mergo's death are vague, but I imagine it could have ran parallel to what's described in the Blood Rapture rune. One thing I surprised he didn't pick up on is that Annalise and Queen Yharnam are made explicitly clear to both be "Blood Queens" in Japanese. Having certainty in that goes a long way in explaining Cainhurt, Queen Yharnam, and Mergo. I've always thought Winter Lanterns are just warped projections of the Hunter's subconscious, explaining their superficial resemblance to the Doll and why they're only found in nightmares. The fact it's a dream could explain many of the stranger things you find all across the game (e.g. the crow-dogs). I could go on but this is already too long. Lokey just expressed a lot of old theories that are now kinda weird imo.
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 2 жыл бұрын
Winter lanterns are definitely a twisted version of the doll. I feel they relate to the fear the character has of the doll. Or that hunters in general do. Here is this eldridge thing that only vaguely is humanish and you can't tell what motivates it. It doesn't even pretend to be a doll convincingly. Must be something in your own mind that wonders if some horror might burst out of her visage at some point.

I’d love to heard a round table discussion between Aesir, Lokey, Sinclair, and Sophie where they all pitch progressively more out-there plots for a Bloodborne sequel. I’m not even kidding, someone tag Sin and make it happen. Personally, I think a pirate theme is the natural next step. You could call it Bloodborne 2: Sea of Blood, and your ship crashes on the abandoned wharf of Yharnam, which is getting swallowed up by weird eldritch ocean stuff. One of the bosses could be The Blood-drunk Barnacle.

Great video! One question, if before the human in Isz transformed there were no great ones, why the human in Isz were looking for the cosmo? I really don't buy the "all great ones were once humans" thing Edit: How the beast scourge existed before the old blood, great ones and pthumerians? So ebrietas remained here because she transformed in a cthulhu monster, so moon presence, brain of mensis etc. are beautiful? Don't know, I really can't buy this So the immortal Blood Queen of Cainhurst, descendant of phtumerians, who has knights in search of blood to give her to have a blood baby, starts searching blood for a blood baby when laurence ask her? The swore enemy of the church works with its founder.. Micolash who wears a byrgenwerth stundent outfit and knows about Rom, surely isn't a Byrgenwerth scholar but a man who has stolen their outfit for.. reasons?? For the "they cannot have babies", to me it seems more like their babies eventually all dies, we've seen great one babies in Mergo, Kos, Iosefka, Arianna.. so I don't really know if they can't or if their babies dies soon after the birth. I think that Willem has participated as well in the hamlet's massacre since his the one obsessed with more eyes and eyes inside, and the cursing fishman specifically says "Byrgenwerth" and do not talk about the church at all. The part with the hunter of hunters who send hunters to be "buried" by gherman seems really really plausible and it's really poetical. I don't think the mad man is ludwig, for instance why should he be in the hintertomb dressed like a monk? Shouldn't he at least be dressed as a healing church hunter? And the mad man clearly use an imitation of the moonlight sword while ludwig use the original, the mad man isn't a beast while ludwig is it, and more important: where is the horse? And if ludwig never became a beast why is he in the hunter nightmare? Remember the only way to enter the nightmare is to "fake-out" that your hunter has gone blooddrunk. To me Lawrence was holy as Ludwig for the church, or else they'll never put his beastified skull on an altar in the grand cathedral.. And I don't think the blood of the bloodletting beast became the first source of blood because 1: They're using old blood, not beast blood and 2: The blood maidens exist to get the blood, if a source like that existed why experiment on holy women for blood? For the executioner robe I think that it really have inspired the outfit of the church, but the logarius/cainhurst thing happens later in time. Logarius is not dumb, he killed every source of blood for annalise, binded her and protected her with all his powers, only after our hunter kills him she can return to her affairs. She specifically says we are the only two vilebloods.. so no, cainhurst knights specifically did not survive, that's why we only learn about cainhurst from a wannabe executioner and cainhurst area itself. Where the informations about the cainhurst crow identity come from? And the ones about mensis brain? Why micolash calls for eyes in the inside if the wet nurse already gave them to him/them? Edit 2: Sorry but this to me seems 60% invented by Lokey with his headcanons.. I'm sure many information have been mistranslated in from's franchises, but I also think with how much Miyazaki interact with western media and interviewer etc etc he will have noticed his games are being totally misunderstood by now.. I've got nothing against Lokey, he was the source of many mindblowing revelatios to me personally but I think he's headcanoning too much the actual informations that he got. Edit 3: Disagreeing with the demon souls 2 is just dumb after all the evidences.. C'mon, watch the entire video and tell me one thing that Aesir said that Lokey agreed on..

My understanding was that you get physically brought to the dream by the messengers and you’re astral projecting back into the real world, which is why you don’t die when killed, because your body is still dreaming, but then in the Yharnam sunrise ending your body in the dream is killed, leaving your astral projection in the waking world the only form of your consciousness extent, which means that when you die again, like Micolash, you have no way to reform and simply cease to exist. Which is also why there are all of the tombstones in the dream, because there are ton of Hunter corpses that need to be buried.

@martinwilson4824
@martinwilson4824 2 жыл бұрын
‘Byrgen’ in old English translates literally to ‘tomb’ and ‘Werth’ translates to ‘Honour’ or ‘Dignity’ so you’re both wrong, and it’s proper name would be Tomb of Honour, which makes sense since the horrors that happened there led to the death of dignified practice.

In defense of localization teams, they have almost always maintained the beauty of the original script. I bought a PS3 and Demons Souls after watching the opening cinematic and falling in love with the “proetry” of the writing. That’s something that is very hard to translate. They nail the atmosphere but (especially early on) it was at the cost of the intended meaning. Some of it is so muddleheaded and misleading that it drives me nuts, but if they hadn’t done such a good job at maintaining the beauty of the syntax, I never would have played Demon’s Souls. Thanks the good blood for Lokey (and Aesir…and the snack covenant). I am blown away by Lokey’s understanding of the original script. I have been barking up many a wrong tree. Thanks for this episode!

There is no indication that Micolash was part of Byrgenwerth? I mean, you literally enter into a memory version of Byrgenwerth study rooms just by touching his body dude. Also, the Fishing hamlet massacre was done by Byrgenwerth AND the Healing Church, not by a sort of an "early Byrgewerthian version" of the Church. Even if Laurence separated from Master Willem and founded the Healing Church, in reality Laurence did not definitively cut off relations with Byrgenwerth but the two institutions continued to cooperate for a certain time. Gehrman was the "meeting point" in which it is clear that the figures of Laurence and Willem were united in a sort of "triumvirate", with the Healing Church, Byrgenwerth and the Hunting section guided by Gehrman. It was at the time of this triumvirate that the Fishing Hamlet massacre took place. Don't forget that they sought "inner eyes" within the villagers heads, that is... Byrgenwerth.

I was getting really anxious that you weren't gonna ask about Amygdalas as the video closed out, lol. Personally, my skin-deep theory is that, seeing as how they look like our pineal gland, they might be psychic "organs" of Great Ones, extensions of their being. I haven't checked it against anything though and I feel like the idea won't stand against the lore, but it'll satisfy me for now until I chew on it again later. Either that or they're the Great One's equivalent of our messengers. The messengers can go pretty much anywhere and move things around for our benefit. That seems to be what the Amygdala do for the Great Ones.

Work on the audio levels! Sudden screaming of excitement, and moments when you have to turn up the volume make for bad content. @2:53:14 Mmm.. this lokey guy sounds WAY too sure of himself, in a way that he simply cannot be. He might be well informed, but he sounds so wrong in so many things. Like his insistence on our Character being trapped in the blood-drunk Hunter's Nightmare, when there is no evidence of us being affected by Kos in any way! Instead, needing outside help to even get in. One thing is providing the evidence.. but he sounds like the way he ties it all up is the truth (even correcting Aesir as if his take on anything is wrong). EDIT: Also, people eating mummies is far more interesting (and with hints of "rationality") other than rich people being degenerates. Almost as interesting as people's interest in mummification, and the process of its democratization!

Gwyn definitely was being selfish. He put his legacy above what was actually best for the world and it's people. Anything that got in the way of that was rejected. Even his own eldest son. But it can be argue what he did was the opposite to destruction. He forced stagnation of body and spirit so his civilation could remain supreme. All these souls are forced to remain in a decaying world just so the tribe of gods can maintain their hold.

the soulsborne games are loosely connected. fog takes over the world in demon's souls, turning it into a purgatory that evolves into the world of dark souls 1-3, the fog stagnates/rots in elden ring, spreads to other realms in sekiro, and manifests as an entire culture in bloodborne. all of the games have different dimensions and dreamscapes which can be transported to via portals, it's not that hard to connect the lore
