Experimental Character Showcase - Shugenja

I love these character showcase games, but I especially love when you guys talk about how you made the character or what previous versions of the character existed. This probably sounds silly, but as someone who loves to homebrew and is currently trying to make my own entire homebrew script (which is really difficult!), I love to see what goes into the mindset of making a character and what does/doesn't work.

I think the design aspect is really interesting in general. I've made a couple homebrew characters, but I couldn't imagine doing a whole set because of how much you really need to test the characters and consider things like how Shugenja was broken in its original form. My favorite character I made was actually very broken. I intended for it to be broken but not on the level that it was. It went from being an every day ability to a first day ability.

Re: the Chromacam thing: The support URL is backwards because most teleconferencing software (Zoom, Google Meet, etc) mirrors the image in your preview, so the URL needs to be flipped to read properly on your screen. (Also, if you want to weird yourself out, go into your settings and disable the mirroring. It feels super weird.)

I searched this game up after a saw some of the people on the hermitcraft server playing. Ive been binging alot and think I got the hang on all the roles now! Very entertaining! Thanks guys!

There are actually three possible ways for a new Demon to come into effect in this game. 1)Fang Gu jump. 2)Barber swap. 3)Scarlet Woman.

Barber doesnt create a demon it just moves it

@@ladygeneveve3805 As Ben points out in the video, creating a new instance of the Demon from a Barber swap is creating a new Demon. When the player becomes the Demon, they are a new instance of it (i.e. they are created).

Shugenja is one of the core character types in an old game I used to play (L5R), and I played the faction that specialized in them. Never thought I'd see them in BotC, but I'm excited to see it.

Maybe that's why the name sounded familiar to me. I played L5R for a very brief time and had barely any cards of it, so I'm not really 100% sure if that's where I originally heard it from. Maybe there's a Magic: the Gathering card with it.

Got to play this script at the Big Bad Con. The Shugenja information made things more confusing due to night one Fang Gu jump. It was great!

Weirdly I have now seen two Shugenja reveal games, and it was a bluff in both. I haven't actually seen a Shugenja townsfolk yet.

an evil shugenja would learn the closest evil to tgem. they arent counted, id assume

I suppose a Shugenja isn't anticlockwise or clockwise from themselves, so they wouldn't register as the "nearest" evil player - although, does a (sober and healthy) Clockmaker learn a zero in a Legion, Riot or Lil' Monsta game, or do they learn the shortest nonzero distance between a Demon-Minion pair?

Purely from a perspective of having watched games, rather than having played in any, I really feel sorry for Sailors. Their ability feels more like an outsider's due to how often it seems to help the evil team more than the good team, and this game kinda highlighted that idea. The sailor could have made the Harpy drunk night 1, but the ST made the sailor drunk instead. having looked at how the Sailor works, this seems reasonable. Then near the end when the sailor picked a living Towns Folk, the ST initially made the TF drunk. The sailor then got Harpy'd, the other player got killed by the demon, and the ST decided to reverse their decision and made the sailor drunk. The sailor then breaks madness thinking they had a chance of being unkillable, and killed two good players speeding up the end of the game. I'm not sure I've seen a game where the Sailor had any positive impact. Mainly as when the sailor dies, very rarely are they able to assume anything given how often they are made drunk regardless of who they picked the previous night. I'm not even sure if I've seen the Sailor survive death because of how often they are drunk when it mattered. It's hard to fly under the radar as a sailor, as you want your targets to know they might have drunk info, but once you are known, evil can largely ignore you. I'd love to see a game where the Sailor is actually useful, and I can see why it is hard because it requires good play by both the player and the ST. But currently I pity good teams with the secret outsider in their midst.

Big brain play: on 5 players remaining, Lyra chooses herself in the night, and passes the Fang Gu to Patryk (Scarlet Woman). Oracle gets a 3, everyone starts thinking Vortox? Throws shade on the madness-break from Emma.

The "Shugenja + Pixie" bluff was very dangerous. As soon it became clear that Patters was lying, Patryk's claim should have been immediately suspect.

Surely the most helpful person for the high priestess to talk to on day one is the sailor who picked the harpy? Or possibly the seamstress who picked two evil players on night one? A knight who saw a scarlet woman (who is likely to become the demon) and the high priestess (who already knows they themselves aren't the demon) seems very unhelpful 🤔

But one of those two people the Knight saw was the High Priestess. Two players who's info is clearing one another being able to come together and learn that is hugely powerful! Remember, the ability isn't 'learn who got the best info last night', the ability is 'learn who the ST thinks you should speak to'. - Ben
