Bloodrock was one of my favorite rock bands growing up, especially 2nd and 3rd albums, and motivated me during initial years of playing guitar. DOA received limited radio play at the time, which is how I initially heard of them. 'A Certain Kind' showcased a softer side of the band, and listening to this brings me back to that time in my life, very fond memories. I, too, had no idea this was a cover from another band. SO - i listened (rather, tried to listen) to the Soft Machine version (surprisingly, I had no idea who they were), so thanks to them for composing the song, and thank you Bloodrock for the feel, emotion and musicianship that you provided.

A certain kind... of love, I'd say Is this for me, every night Your love sets me alive And I know, i know it's real, coz it's what I feel, it's what I feel... And loving you the way I do Makes everything seem right again And when you're there I know you just can't tell the time Within your heart it's just not right it's just not right, it's just not right And so our love I see in you The things today, the things we do And when you're there I know You just can't see the time within your heart I know it's real, it's what I feel And loving you the way I do Makes everything seem right again And when you're there I know I know you just can't see All the time of day I know you're mine, and all the time

@ZachChump3r Yeah, I checked out the Soft Machine version right away and was unimpressed. I much prefer to hear Jim straining and delivering the occasional flat note. Still, my comment was about the composition of a great song. I love Bloodrock because of their flaws as much as I do in spite of them. By the way, my favorite Bloodrock song is Breach of Lease and I think on Bloodrock USA they showed unbelievable songcraft and delivered incredible performances. Thanks for the reply.

Kind of odd that Mike Ratledge was a member of Soft Machine and Mike Rutledge a member of Bloodrock. I wonder if Bloodrock found the song sue to the closeness of there names. And BTW, Soft Machine's 1st LP was just Called Soft Machine, not Volume One.

Oh my, for me this really wrecks a perfect Soft Machine song. Ok, some may like this cover, to me the original is way better. This one misses the special flaw and doesn't give me nearly as much goosebumps (if at all) as the Soft Machine version does. But I know, in the end it all comes down to the matter of taste......
@mimetics4 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand your thinking "wrecks a perfect Soft machine" It is a different take on the original-- and I might add I'm not alone when I say it's great to hear another Band take it on and give it a go-- I think it's great cover! Again "Flaw" vs 'perfect" which is it? Our can it be the same?

This is a typical American version, more pathetic, bombastic and with more power than the withdrawn and vulnerable British original version by Soft Machine. This bombastic effect is emphaisezed by the sounds of the voice and the saxophone and a cheap slow down in rhythm here and there. What I miss and hasn't been understood by Bloodrock is the fragile 16th century Renaissance intro by William Byrd's 'The Earl of Salisbury', They turn that into a 20th century Broadway musical kind of arrangement. But even played by Bloodrock, the song is still strong, because it is a unique composition, never heard before and never repeated again in pop music.

Well thank you, this has been a fav of mine for >40 years but I did not know that Soft Machine covered it, and I have two Soft Machine albums (Bundles and SoftSix) but had ever heard their version will look for it now!!!

@mauricemorning True. They didnt write it. But have you heard the Soft Machine version. Its shit in comparison. Elvis wrote Unchained Melody and he sang it and it was horrible. The Righteous Brothers sang it and it was a hit. Nobody can sing it better than Jim.
@MagiKpeople Simply and utterly wrong. There are tons of covers that are better than the original artist. Not only in rock but all genres(minus hip hop, thats all crap cover or not).

Robert Wyatt , the original singer, is and acquired taste..but it has a fragility that adds to the songs poignancy. This singer turns it into some sort of "power ballad"....and that saxaphone solo...ugh....anyway....each to their own.
@BundySloth8 жыл бұрын
You're right this version is just ok, but it's really straightforward and a bit over the top.
@BundySloth4 жыл бұрын
@Mandy Vin I respectfully disagree, I think it makes it more contrived and sterile. What @plantagenant said is spot on, It's the fragility and vulnerability in RW's voice, and the overall tone of the instrumentation in the original that makes it such an emotionally visceral experience.
@BundySloth4 жыл бұрын
@Mandy Vin Referring to early Soft Machine as "generic shit" it's clear you're a philistine.
