Mary fought hard for her happiness, to find love and become a mother. This was not meant to be. What’s truly tragic is that she wanted a child so badly she manifested it psychically. After the humiliation, departure from her husband, and loss of hope, I think she went crazy.

They were definitely like their father. Such wickedness. But I’m glad Elizabeth let James 6 have the throne. Her father would’ve hated that . I think she did that on purpose to stick it to her father and end the house of Tudor. Some of Mary’s behaviour was revenge against her father too. He should never have treated their mothers so cruelly. And just think all that slaughter and cruelty to get a male heir, only for the boy to die. The best laid plans....

IMHO, Mary I is a very complex historical figure. She was extremely intelligent, and one of the most educated women in the world during her lifetime. To simply call her either a monster or a victim would be a gross oversimplification. Many of the darker aspects of her character stemmed from being the daughter of King Henry VIII. Both his DNA and his cruel mistreatment of her and her mother during her youth caused her to resemble him in many ways, few of them good. She was, perhaps a monster in some ways, but a monster of her father's making. Her reign was a disastrous time for England, but many of the disasters were not of her making. Her shameful treatment of Protestants, however, was undeniable and unforgivable, so the epithet of "Bloody Mary" is well-earned and accurate. I hope that my view is somewhat more nuanced than that of my fifteenth great-grandfather, Reverend John Foxe, without going too far in the other direction...

@@jamiemohan2049 I don’t think it was Mary’s fault that she didn’t get married much earlier. After Anne Boleyn’s death, Mary did kind of reconcile with her father, yet he still didn’t arrange a marriage for her like it was custom for young women her age. The exact reason was political as Mary was much more supported, especially by Catholics.

Women was so bad she was called BLOODY, yet you want to blame the father as if he wasnt also a pawn in the game that is religion. I am glad I view women as equal...as in equally responsible for their actions so men areant always the sole blame. If anything, Henry treated Mary far better than any would have in their position since women were not allowed to inherit the throne, as pointed out in the video. Mary should have played the game, like Elizabeth did.

I love that her fathers policies and issues/wives were not heavily relied upon to flesh out the story. Mary has an interesting yet tragic life and while a lot of what her Father did to her and her mother make up a deal.of her later in life strongly held beliefs, I hate that some stories only rely on that. This was not one of those. Thank you for bringing this little known yet favorite Queen Of mine to life for others. I feel her story gets glossed over in favor of her PRE and post predecessors. Queen Mary Tudor was tough but I don’t think she was England’s worst queen. At the beginning, she was a very forgiving queen. She wanted her reign to be a merciful one. She was England’s first Queen which was groundbreaking and courageous in itself. She was a Tudor- if she were male, her aggressions would have been over looked, even praised as ruthless, she should get her credit.

Mary Tudor's misfortune was that history was written by her enemies. Mary was a brave and brilliant queen, she made the mistake to allow the pyre which was mainly recommended by the church cause Mary was tolerant toward the heretics. They convincef her that the drought was in fact a punishment from good and that fire was the only was purify the world. Mary s biggest problem was that she was a woman she had to fight the country and the parliament, and she was a strong figure and she managed to obtrude.

I've always thought Mary got a bad rap. Even though the burnings were so horrific and obviously very wrong, Elizabeth I executed many hundreds of Catholics and is "Gloriana." Mary executed 280 Protestants and is "Bloody Mary." She literally went from Princess to bastard overnight and endured much cruelty from her own father and Anne Boleyn. I can't imagine what that did to her when Anne Boleyn had her moved to Hatfield to work as a servant for Elizabeth. I think Anne was intensely jealous of Catherine and Mary and she couldn't hurt Catherine, so she took her anger and jealousy out on Mary who was a helpless teenager at the time. That is why I have never liked Anne, although I do admire her courage and intelligence. Great documentary! Love this channel!!!

It's not quite Fair to call her servant to the princess Elizabeth. I feel for Mary I, she endured all sorts of many types of unspeakable severe serious traumas, but she still needs to own her bad rap. Mary took out her revenge if you will, on ppl who weren't even her father, for all his abuses. Let's not compare the killings and lest we forget ROME WAS WRONG. Elizabeth endured different kinds of traumas and look what she made of her trauma. Look what Mary made of hers... Don't make this about Gloriana please.
@ElizabethF2222

@@TheCandiceWang I agree with most of what you wrote and Elizabeth endured a lot as well as a teenager (including being put in the Tower by Mary). However, Elizabeth executed many Catholics in HORRIFIC ways. I'm not sure which is worse; burning at the stake or hanging, drawing and quartering which was how Elizabeth executed many Catholic "traitors." She also had many of her own servants executed as well, including her long-time doctor, Dr. Lopez, who was innocent, on just the word of the Earl of Essex. It is not about Elizabeth I, but my point was that I don't think Mary was any more cruel than Henry or Elizabeth, so why is she "Bloody Mary?" Yes, Rome and the dreaded inquisition was horrific. Not denying that! There is no doubt that Elizabeth was a great monarch. I was just talking about their historical names and their individual reputation for cruelty.
@TheCandiceWang
@TheCandiceWang 3 жыл бұрын
@@ElizabethF2222 Agreed about the naming. Honestly history and even her current time period where she was alive were both cruel to Mary. None more so than her father, after he had to "move on." I know their dad is seen as tyrannical by many like me, but he's Def given a double standard compared to Mary just cuz he was the likeable summer king. I guess it's easy for me to see the difference between Mary's religious executions and E's bc she was monach first, so her protestant burnings were first, so I guess if ppl must compare the sisters, that's just how I myself see things 🙏 Yes when I finally found out what being drawn and quartered ACTUALLY was like, I about threw up lol. Such primal evil. I don't know what was with ppl who conjured up such executions. Definitely barbaric, as too many monarchs had folks drawn and quartered! Being a Joan d'Arc lover my number one fear of death probably would have to be burning :/

@@TheCandiceWang I think I would have to choose burning too but wow. What a horrible choice. Tudor England executions were absolutely horrific and I too wonder who came up with such awful punishments. So nice to have an intelligent discussion and an exchange of opinions and to remain civil. I see so many ugly responses when people see things differently. I don't know much about Joan d'Arc but what I do know about her, she fascinates me! So young to have commanded an army! @@ElizabethF2222 Generally the evidence suggests the whole sentence of being hanged, drawn and quartered was not carried out to the letter of the law, usually the victim was cut down dead or unconscious. The one time Elizabeth ordered it to be done (with the first Babington conspirators) the crowd’s reaction was one of horror. This suggests it was not common for them to see it. So generally the victims only felt the hanging part. While it is true the were similar numbers of Catholic executed under Elizabeth as Mary there are some significant differences. Mary started the burnings about two years into her reign. There were no executions in Elizabeth’s reign for political or religious reasons for about 12 years. Then there was a rebellion in 1569 many of the rebels were executed. For the first third of her reign not one person was executed because of their religious beliefs. The hangings to which you refer did not start for nearly 20 years. This was well after the Pope excommunicated Elizabeth, and effectively told Catholics not only could they depose her, they should depose her. This made being a Catholic a political act as well as a religious one. The more Protestant of Elizabeth’s councillors had always wanted stronger measures taken against Catholics. Elizabeth was able to keep a lid on them until she was excommunicated. The number of Catholics then executed for treason took place over a 20 or 30 year period as opposed to three years of Mary’s rule. Catholics were executed for political reasons not religious (although many had not actually conspired against Elizabeth, so that may be a semantic difference ). Had Mary ruled as long as Elizabeth then it is likely the number of her victims would have numbered in the 1000s. This is why she is called Bloody Mary, and Elizabeth is not. However, the irony is Mary was probably the nicer as a person of the two women. I think Mary does get a bad rap, but I think she was a disaster as a queen. I also think had Edward lived, he would have got a pretty bad rap as a king because he, like Mary, was a religious fanatic and would have persecuted Catholics for their religious beliefs.

@jonmilton3529 2 жыл бұрын
By the way of numbers, Elizabeth I executed more Catholics (many, but not all, whose only fault was simply being Catholic) than Mary I executed Protestants. Yet, due to the bias of historians, Mary I has come down to us as "Bloody Mary," or the "worst queen of England," when in fact, many of the institutions and ideas of Elizabeth I found their genus in Mary's reign. Mary has gotten the worst treatment out of all the monarchs of England, including Charles I, simply because she was a woman and a devout Catholic.

Mary was overshadowed by Elizabeth for two reasons: (1) Like Mary Queen of Scots, Mary Tudor was a romantic and ran afoul of men who were not loyal to them, and (2) Mary was not the statesman Elizabeth was. When Mary was queen she did not fill the crown coffers nor did she build up the crown navy; Elizabeth did both. When Elizabeth inherited the crown,, England was broke. When Elizabeth died, she left England a very rich country. Plus, she was known for her overall wise governance.

Not quite so. I don't realkg believe the moniker is fair so many years on later, but she is comparable to others who also do not have a favorable regard. She was quite hot headed destructive unstable, all due to their father who comijttee such abuses. You could have substituted in E for all your description there, more than for M. Mary let Henry get the best of her. It's a shame bc he really did a number on sooooooo many family members and just destroyed them. Doesn't mean God gonna not hold her accountable for her atrocities. Just as He holds their father accountable too.

Mary Tudor was the product of her upbringing. She can only be considered the worst queen of England due to the lack of queens. She was the only child of Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon. Ergo the rightful heir to the English thrown. Henry was a monster who put her and Elizabeth through hell. He also took away Mary’s religion when it stopped suiting him. Bloody Mary is not a just earned nickname. Only about 300 Protestants were killed by the crown during her reign. A drop in the bucket when compared to a Joe Stalin, 20 million. Or any number of mediaeval or ancient rulers. Mic drop.

I think that the relationship between Mary and Elisabeth wasnt that bad. After all, Mary saw Elisabeth grow. She was put on the care of the new baby so even if at first she resented her, she come to accept that Elisabeth had no blame. In fact they even reported that Elisabeth as a kid was very fond of Mary. Also, when Anne was executed, Elisabeth was just 4 and was dishonored. Guess who took care of her expenses? Mary, who understood what it felt like to be in taken away from a prestigious position. In a way, Its pretty certain Elisabeth looked at Mary as a sort of a motherly figure. Mary knew she had to execute Elisabeth but she didnt, because she had cared for her and was her sister. They had lots of differences and argued a lot for sure (sort of a love-hate relationship), but deep down they loved each other. Thats why Elisabeth chose to rest alongside Mary.

The court was talking about that subject constantly! And so did the people in London! He expected Elizabeth converting to the Roman catholic faith and Elisabeth promised to do so because she was afraid of being executed! Of course she wouldn 't had done that! There were only political and tactical reasons for her behaviour.Philip soon left mary and went to Bruessels to the court where he had a few mistresses and waited for Marys death! Mary hadn't any scruples at all executing her sister. @@sabine4759 Philip did not fall in love with Elizabeth. She was ugly, she had dark teeth from eating sweeties and destroyed skin.... It was just a political move. He wanted to marry her afterwards because that means having hold still on England. With the death of Mary he had lost control of England somehow and Elizabeth was the obvious choice. Philip was very busy man, and Mary was close in her 40s, she couldnt give Philip an heir so it made no sense to waiste time with a Queen that wasnt going to produce heirs. Mary had raised Elizabeth, and had cared for her. At fist didnt like her but grew fond of her as she was an innocent child, Mary only disliked her mother not her. Elizabeth also was very fond of Mary as a toddler. She was the only one to understand her when she was repudiated from court by their father. When the obvious reasons to kill Elizabeth came, it would have secured Catholicism into the throne, but she didnt kill her because it was her beloved sister above all. Elizabeth was arrested once... she had her actually cared for in Prison and then released after few months instead of killing her. If that isnt a good person, WHAT IS!! Fun fact: the Puritans who fled to America to 'escape religious persecution' were persecuted for... being intolerant towards Catholics. Under King James (Elizabeth's successor) himself a protestant, the crown wanted to finally end the religious fighting that tore the nation apart. This also meant silencing the puritans who believed the king should persecute Catholics a lot more.

How interesting! All this unbridled admiration for a religiously tyrannical Monarch, who suckered her People in her speech at the Guildhall, by declaring that she loved them as a Mother loves her children. She primarily did that so they would protect her from the Wyatt Rebellion. Against the preference of her "Beloved Children", she married Phillip II of Spain, reinstated the Roman Catholic Church, THEN PROCEEDED TO BARBECUE NEARLY 400 OF HER "BELOVED CHILDREN", including a pregnant woman who gave birth at the stake from the horrific agony she suffered...and the child was tossed back into the flames. Mary Tudor DESERVED the humiliation of her 2 phantom lregnancies. She was DESPICABLE..and fully deserving of the sobriquet "BLOODY MARY".

The Prayer Book Rebellion during the reign of Mary's brother Edward VI cost over 6,000 lives. This includes the massacre of Clyst Heath where 900 prisoners, bound and gagged, had their throats slit on the orders of the Earl of Bedford. The young king is said to have read the reports of the rebellion's suppression "with great interest." Then came Kett's rebellion and another 3,000 dead. Why is Edward not reviled as the Butcher? Arguably, Mary is the LEAST bloody of all the Tudors. Henry VII killed masses of rebels and political opponents to secure the throne he usurped. His son and successor was a monster on par with Vlad The Impaler and Ivan the Terrible. As noted above, King Edward racked up a solid body count, and Good Queen Bess killed over 450 people following the Northern Rebellion as well as 130 priests and 60 lay people. The last is only a fraction of "Gloriana's" butcher's bill. "Bloody Mary?"

The way Mary was treated was so unfair! To give your daughter all these honors and treat her as heir then bam you get a new wife and she gets treated like crap! Especially when she had done nothing wrong and neither had her mother who had always been such a wonderful and faithful wife. She was still in love with him untill the day she died and that's the saddest part. I believe in the end henry realized what he had done wrong he had left a good wife and a loving Family for what? Not saying Anne was a bad person who that she did cheat on him but any women who goes after a married man and demands he leaves his wife I'd not a very nice person in my view also the way Anne later treated Mary was so uncalled for! Also to be fair Elizabeth was treated very unfairly after the fall of her mother as well. Truthfully he didn't treat eiether of his daughters very well.

Anne Boleyn was no saint, but she was innocent of the charges laid against her. She originally didn’t want anything to do with King Henry, as she was happy enough to want to marry her betrothed Henry Percy and was also aware that her sister had been King Henry’s mistress. But King Henry was persistent and even ended Anne’s betrothal to Henry Percy, which infuriated her. She had tried to leave court at one point just to get away from him but she was trapped in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation. No one was allowed to marry her, as marriages between nobles had to be approved by the King, and he wanted her for himself. She couldn’t run away to a nunnery as that would require her father’s permission, and that would never happened since that would ruin any advantages that her family could gain through her marriage. There were no options once King Henry set his sight on someone, and he eventually wore her down. She was smart enough to avoid being his mistress but there was still the matter of him being a married man. I’m not gonna lie, the way Catherine and Mary were treated was reprehensible and traumatized Mary. There’s no defense or excuse for what they suffered at King Henry and Anne’s hands. After suffering miscarriages and only having Elizabeth, she knew that her situation was precarious and she was slowly falling out of King Henry’s good graces. The straw that ended her was miscarrying a boy after catching King Henry with Jane Seymour. Her enemies chose that moment to strike and came to King Henry with trumped up charges of adultery and incest, high treason for a Queen which meant death. It is unclear if King Henry truly believed the charges or if he played along so he could get rid of her since he had Jane waiting in the wings. King Henry had already hired the French swordsman who was to be her executioner before she was was even tried or heard the charges against her, and was well on his way during Anne’s temporary stay in the Tower of London. While she was in the Tower she saw the executions of the innocent men she was accused of sleeping with, one of which was her own brother George. King Henry was married to Jane Seymour just days after Anne’s death, with young Elizabeth only being 2 years old.

The young lady that played her in The Tudors really broke my heart with her portrayal. I’ve certainly changed my views of her. I feel like the stress of that horrible betrayal ate at her inside until it finally consumed her. Henry killed his daughter .

Can't help but notice how much that portrait of Queen Mary Tudor looks like Dennis Waterman in drag. Comedy aside, very interesting. 👍

Very interesting information more from Mary’s perspective than other videos. She’s usually made out to be a petty vengeful woman. Thank you for this video.
