I think she would’ve been great if it wasn’t for the mess her dad created. She focused too much on religion but given her circumstances who wouldn’t have??? The girl was practically disowned and called a bastard when she was conceived and born within marriage. They also treated her mother like a ho when the real ho was Anne. I would’ve been mad too! Regardless, she would’ve been a good monarch.

I've always found it fascinating that Mary mostly did what was expected of a female monarch during that time and ended up becoming reviled as 'Bloody Mary' whilst Elizabeth challenged them at every turn and ruled for 45 years. I think it says a lot about how we should approach life.

It wasn't thousands it was only 3 or 500, during her father's reign many more people were executed, it was the same under Elizabeth's as well, she was called bloody because it was mostly protestants that wrote her history, if it had of been Catholics or Eangelicals we would remember her in a very different way.

Her life was a tragic one, so much pressures and demands while fighting for doing what she thought was right can lead to one being misguided. So the ending question of 2 options for her that fits is both.

Henry and his son Edward should have treated her more kindly. She had plenty of years to build up her hate and resentment which she unleashed on all her enemies, real or perceived. Britain's first (official) female monarch was one of it's worst.

Mary I was not the "penultimate" Tudor monarch, though I do believe her reign has been unfairly disparaged. She did the best she could with what she was given to work with. Her half sister Elizabeth I reigned after Mary, and the religious deaths in Elizabeth's reign were at least as bad in both number and circumstances, though Bloody Bess has never been a thing. Thank you for this balanced recounting.

She was the penultimate Tudor. Penultimate means the second last. As Elizabeth was the last, this makes Mary the penultimate.

Mary was not completely confident in her Spanish, she speaked Spanish to her mother Katherine of Aragon and that’s how they communicated but by the time she married Philip she was kinda rusty in her Spanish and yeah, was not completely confident in it. @@freckles4603 that’s not the reason. The reason is that she learned Aragonese Spanish while Philip spoke Castilian Spanish. I learned Spanish in Costa Rica, so when I speak to other Spanish speakers, some things get lost in translation.

I've often thought that. She was so desperate for a child. She was said to have been fairly naive. Have to say I wouldnt have wanted to have been the person who told her she couldnt have been pregnant after it became so obvious to everyone else. I heard on one of the histories I was watching about her that one of the people she put in the fire what cause premature labor and when the baby rolls out of the fire do the baby back into the fire. the bloody part of her title is wrong. when you hear bloody, you think of,.. well.. blood, pools and rivers. she didn't behead people, drink their blood or bath in their blood, she killed with fire, so her title should have been more to do with fire, flames, burning,
