Mr Clarke, on the eighth day of his opening statement, disclosed a confidential document on the debriefing on an IRA informer, code-named Infliction. It was dated April 6, 1984. The crucial passage read: "Martin McGuinness had admitted to Infliction that he personally fired the shot from a Thompson sub-machine gun from Rossville Flats that precipitated the Bloody Sunday episode."

Fun-fact they were initially WELCOMED by the N.Irish Catholic population. The IRA didn't like it (for obvious reasons), but British soldiers - at the very beginning of their deployment in N.I. were CHEERED by Catholics. They thought the Army would protect them from Protestant paramilitaries, and - who knows! - the ordinary Soldiers might even believed they were on a mission there to keep the peace and (on many occasions) TRIED to do their job! Many of them as far as I recall even came from Ireland/N.ireland and might even still had relatives there! It took only a few years and the situation turned by 180°. One year into the deployment and the "top-brass" of the units deployed in N.I. were already dining, partying, dancing and playing golf with the top-leaders of the Protestant community. They weren't "neutral" AT ALL. By 1970/71 the "rumors" about alleged (mixed) hit-squads from the British Army Intel & Spec-Ops together with the UVF/UFF paramilitaries (i.e: TERRORISTS) carrying out - ALLTOGETHER! - killings of suspected IRA-members - or UVF killings carried out with intel provided by the Brit-Intelligence weren't "rumors" anymore - they were an "open secret". ...AND THEN - January '72 comes along! ...and believe or not! - but the IRA COULDN'T BE MORE HAPPY! From one of their LOWEST points in History they were able to jump back on the scene - recruit SCORES of people, reorganize, resupply and go on the "attack" (if by "attack" you mean terrorist bombing campaigns). Thanks to few trigger-happy fools the "romance" between the locals and the Army was OVER & DONE - FOREVER! PS. ...and WTF was even the Army DOING THERE ANYWAY??... like they couldn't stay afar and watch from distance??

I was there on that terrible day. The British soldiers were not fired on. The working class people of Derry were simply marching for Civil Rights and equality. They were met with the full force of British imperialism's military might. This video shows the real and terrifying face of armed occupation. But the people were not deterred or frightened and resisted the tanks and guns. Forcing the now King of England, and former Colonel in Chief of the terrorist Parachute Regiment, to come to terms with and to shake hands with the leaders of the risen people of Derry and occupied six counties of Ireland. Thank you for posting this historic footage so the world can see the truth.

The much delated report into this massacre led to the British Government apologising for killings that were 'unjustified and unjustifiable.' The tactics used in Aden and Kenya were used in a 'British' city. I have no time for men of violence of any stripe, but don't kid yourself the British were anything other than active players in this tragedy. The same unit killed ten innocents in Ballymurphy six months before and literally got away with murder. They did it again in Derry. As the old Irish song said, 'and you dare to call me a terrorist while you look down your gun.' Bad old days.

@@501sqn3 The Irish civil war was in 1922-23. Are you confusing it with the Troubles of 1969-1994? During the Troubles, British security forces, namely soldiers of the British Army and Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR), as well as police officers of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), were responsible for 365 deaths. Many more injured, many more imprisoned without trial, etc. You appear to be trying to force the argument as me supporting the IRA, which I 100% do not. Just don't give us the warm beer & cricket B/S of the jolly old Brits. They were active, partial and lethal in the Troubles. Operation Banner was there to support a corrupt, Gerrymandered & sectarian statelet that the UK allowed to develop without any oversight.

Growing up in our irish Catholic school the teacher was teaching us the ten commandments. That's probably something the English were probably not aware of . The 2nd was love thy neighbour... A lad asked the teacher Do the English believe in the 2nd commandment. Teacher replied They wouldn't have bothered to take the whole world by force had they believed in loving thy neighbour. Lad ... but do the British love us... Teacher of course they do, they came to save us from the Protestants. Lad... but aren't they also Protestant. Teacher... it's not about Catholic and Protestant It's about love and hate. Teacher, there are two kind of coward's in this world. A coward of love and a coward of hate. Pending on minority if the majority over rules. It could have a Devastating effect if the opposite took place it would look like a Declaration Of War if the British army were called in to attack innocent people. And so that is why it became a war which lasted years and years.

'The Saville Inquiry's 2010 report [UK governments in-house judicial investigation], released after a 12-YEAR INVESTIGATION, found otherwise [that the Irish demonstrators didn't fire upon the soldiers first].'..of course it did. BUT the investigation cost 190 million (officials taking the opportunity to skim off the top), was given a flash name (to infer credibility into it's findings in the hope of quelling public criticism) and took over 30 years to produce from the time of the incident (in hope that most people have forgotten what happened AND to infer it wasn't really that important whilst quietly shoving a finger up at the public by making it take so long). Understand the entire report dynamic was designed to be dealt with in this despicable way from the start - eg there's no way it should have taken that long. Pre-meditated institutionalised corruption at the highest level.

Yes, and that foolishly short-sighted thinking to teach a lesson on unarmed civilians gave the IRA a massive long-term victory. Bloody Sunday was a massive long-term tactical blunder by the British Army. I understand the Paras were to use the riot as a way to draw out IRA members esp snipers and shoot them, this strategy I suggest was very dangerous and resulted in civilian casualties (a massacre). Intelligence as very poor, internment was ineffective and inappropriate. Later with better intelligence the SAS ambushed IRA members, they killed over 26 IRA members. For civilians it was a terrible situation such an horrific waste of life. The UK govt had a lot to answer for, terrorists on both side did horrific things and soldiers could be very brutal.

Major Ted Loden, commander of Support Company, members of which had fired all the shots which killed 14 and wounded 14 others, told Saville that shortly after the killing ended, he had taken down in his own hand statements from each of the shooters, plotted map references showing the locations of the shooters and of their targets and had recorded the soldiers’ accounts of why they had fired. He provided a vivid account of interviewing the soldiers one by one, as he sat in the back of an armoured vehicle a few hundred yards from Rossville Street as darkness descended with a map spread out on his lap, writing by the light of a battery-powered lamp. Loden was handed a type-written document detailing the shots. He agreed that this seemed to be a type-written version of his hand-written account. The Inquiry then produced the handwritten original. Loden looked at the document and said that while the wording was his, the handwriting wasn’t. Whose was it, then, he was asked? It might be General Jackson’s, Loden suggested. But why would Jackson have painstakingly transcribed his notes more or less immediately after he had written them down? Loden pondered the question for perhaps 20 seconds, then replied: “Well, I cannot answer that question.” Jackson, recalled to the witness-box, confirmed that the handwriting was his. Cross-examination revealed that none of the shots described in Jackson’s list conformed to any of the shots which had actually been fired. Some of the trajectories recorded showed bullets passing through brick buildings before finding their targets. None of the locations where uncontested evidence showed the victims had fallen was recorded as such in the map references. It wasn’t that the list contained inaccuracies: from start to finish, it was wrong in every detail. Jackson had no explanation to offer for any of this. He claimed that he had entirely forgotten having produced the documents when first giving evidence but had now recovered a “vague memory.” On more than 20 occasions, he used phrases along the lines, “I cannot remember,” “I do not recall,” “I am afraid I cannot help you there.”

I’ve come to learn about Bloody Sunday (extensively) due to watching Derry Girls. As an American, it is unfathomable that an army of para’s felt it “appropriate” to “retaliate,” with military arms against rocks, bottles, and saliva. I now understand why the U.S. chose to fund the IRA. 👊 while much longer ago, we understood the depression of an occupying British army.

In the end, it nearly always comes down to one man. And in this case that one man was Lt Colonel Derek Wilford, the Colonel interviewed in the footage. Wilford deliberately disobeyed the orders of his Generals not to send troops into the Bogside protests. Wilford was unrestrained and aggressive. He disagreed with the British Army's then-established policy of low profile, restrained deescalation tactics against protestors and rioters. He felt that more deliberate aggressive confrontation should be applied to protestors and rioters. Consequently, he encouraged his troops in 1 Para to be aggressive and excessive. He encouraged his troops to teach rioters a lesson. Consequently, 1 Para applied excessive force and violence in most of their activity in Northern Ireland, culminating in Bloody Sunday with the publically seen unjustified shooting on an unarmed crowd and unjustified murder of 14 unarmed British (Northern Irish) civilians by British soldiers. All 14 unarmed civilians were shot in the back while running away from the gunfire, shot while trying to take cover from the gunfire by lying flat on the ground and shot while trying to help those already shot. Wiford's shortsighted, foolish, and uncaring arrogance that resulted in Bloody Sunday created a terrible stain on British history and was also a massive long-term tactical error. It massively increased Catholic and Irish Nationalist anger and hostility towards the British Army. The IRA received a surge in recruitment. Coordinated IRA attacks on British soldiers and officials increased both in number and severity. And the overall conflict became significantly worse. That said, it was wrong of American organisations such as NORAID to fund the IRA. The IRA was a terrorist organisation (hated by the majority in both Northern Ireland and Ireland) which attempted to usurp democracy through fear and violence, including against innocent Irish civilians. The British Army and Police committed some atrocities in Northern Ireland, such as Bloody Sunday. However, the IRA committed far worse atrocities in Northern Ireland, Britain and Ireland. And murdered a far greater number of innocent civilians, including children. Money from America funded that bloodshed. The reason why the Troubles finally ended was because after the IRA attempted to murder the British Prime Minister and Government by firing a mortar bomb at Downing Street in 1991. The then Prime Minister John Major decided enough was enough and tasked the Security Service (MI5) to use whatever reasonable means necessary to put the IRA out of business and end the conflict. A principal means by which MI5 achieved that was by identifying and stopping all of the IRA's American funding and arms supply, requesting and utilising help from the FBI to do so. Along with stopping the IRA's funding and arms supply from other sources, notably Muammar Gaddafi and Libya. This bankrupted the IRA and left it with no means to continue its terrorist activities. This allowed MI5 to force the IRA to the negotiating table, resulting in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and an end to the Troubles.

@@Coolerman565 ....The so called "peaceful march" , quickly turned into a riot , as predicted by the Police and the Army , when hoards of scumbags, scrotes and IRA agitators left the prescribed route and stormed an Army road block, throwing house bricks, bottles, and excrement!!. The soldiers were forced to use water cannon and KIP's, baton rounds to you, to protect themselves and disperse the rioters. During the process, shots were heard coming from adjacent buildings NOT occupied by the security forces. 1 Para are then deployed on a S&D task and the rest is history. Some of those casualties would have been innocents , but certainly not all and at the end of the day, the rioters and the IRA bear as much responsibility for the event's of that day as anybody else. But they weren't fired at. Lt Colonel Derek Wilford (the Colonel being interviewed) blatantly lied about the events. The Paras fired first indiscriminately on an unarmed crowd. No petrol bombs or acid were thrown at the Paras. Just 4 shots were fired at the Paras after the Paras had already begun indiscriminately firing on the unarmed crowd. All 4 shots missed the Paras. 1 shot was fired by an IRA sniper, and 3 shots were fired by an IRA man with a handgun. 14 unarmed civilians were deliberately murdered. Most of them were shot in the back while running away from the Paras gunfire. Some were deliberately murdered while taking cover, lying flat ground defenceless, and some were shot while helping those who'd already been shot. The British 2010 Saville Inquiry Report concluded that the killings were unjustified and unjustifiable. It found that all of those shot were unarmed, that none were posing a serious threat, that no bombs were thrown, and that soldiers knowingly put forward false accounts to justify their shooting. Following the report, British Prime Minister David Cameron formally apologised for Bloody Sunday. The person primarily responsible for this stain on British history was Lt Colonel Derek Wilford. He deliberately disobeyed orders by his superiors not to send troops into the Bogside. Wilford objected to the defensive, restrained, low-profile de-escalation tactics being employed by his superiors. He singularly determined that more aggressive confrontation needed to be used against rioters. Consequently, Wilford encouraged his men in 1 Para to be aggressive and excessive. Hence why 1 Para had been involved in previous incidents of unjustified excessive violence and killings prior to Bloody Sunday. The night before Bloody Sunday the soldiers of 1 Para had been encouraged to teach rioters a lesson. Thanks to Wilford's foolish, short-sighted, arrogant attitude and actions, Bloody Sunday was also a massive blunder by the British Army. It massively increased Catholic and Irish Nationalist anger and hostility towards the British Army. The IRA received a surge in recruitment. Coordinated IRA attacks on British soldiers and officials increased both in number and severity. And the overall conflict became significantly worse.
