@@yutian5884 I think the US govt (e.g., not regular citizens like me) walks an impossibly fine line geopolitically speaking. Of course I personally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation but it doesn't really matter who I vote for, as neither administration will "recognize" Taiwan. What the US govt will do will let the PRC golden egg continue as long as possible (because of the corrupt American corporations that have financial interests based in the mainland and they have hide influence over the govt) at least until the issue of Taiwan comes to a head, and only THEN will the US come to Taiwans aid in fending off a PRC invasion. Until then, what you guys in Taiwan can do is just continue to grow your population, build new diplomatic relationships, and grow that economy as much as possible. The longer you all hold out, the less powerful the PRC will become on the world stage as the population bust will hit them as will increasing standards of living and higher wages. This is why they are pushing the belt and road initiative so hard, and why just like the US, are beginning to build up their military power for a post industrial scenario. Taiwan has great prospects for it's future, but keeping the PRC at bay for as long as possible and also building the relationship with the US stronger and stronger. Hopefully one day in the future, the US will be able to recognize a sovereign Taiwan and a separate mainland PRC china and maintain a relationship with both (though as I have been saying, this will probably need to be settled with a conflict).

Officially, Taiwan does not have an embassy in the US. Unofficially, Taiwan does have an embassy in the US. Officially Taiwan can not go back on the "one China principle" because that will provoke Xi Jinping, to an extend that might push away unofficial, and official allies of Taiwan. Since they might see that, as Taiwan forcing the PRC's hand. At this moment it is import to show the world what the PRC does, without pressuring them, without forcing their hand. Then the blame is easy to give, and it is really easy to support the victim. But unofficially, Taiwan is Taiwan. Unofficially the PRC does not even try to pretend to be in control of Taiwan.

In 1990s, after the end of military war, KMT gradually changed its stance and became more friendly to CCP. The reason is, unlike DPP sees TW a independent country, KMT regarded China Mainland as part of Taiwan under ROC (which is ridiculous nowadays but still written in TW Constitution) which is actually similar to CCP's view of TW (Taiwan is part of China under CCP). When fled to Taiwan, Chiang Kai Shek, the KMT took pretty much all the gold available of the mainland with them. What left in the mainland China back then was the real poverty. Taiwan is just a bargaining chip for the US to leverage China's development. Will the US really help Taiwan if civil way breaks again? At 2:30, the video clearly states that Taiwan is a result of the ROC fleeing to the island during the Civil War. And in the later part, it was mentioned that the US stepped in to block the CCP from finishing the war and taking control of the island (ie the cause of the political limbo now). There was no independence declared, ever. The US acknowledges this too. Otherwise, this video would have clearly said so. Then throughout the rest of the video, they kept saying "invade Taiwan". How does one invade one's own territory? If Hawaii breaks away due to Civil War and USA wants to unify it, are they going to say "invade" too?

This is a very superficial, simple minded discussion about a very serious topic. Important considerations that were not discussed include: 1. Taiwan is a fundamental, core interest for the PRC and has been so for 71 years. No Chinese government can remain in power if Taiwan became an independent sovereign state. The backlash would be brutal and come from all quarters and would unify all of China for that purpose. 2. The only reason Mao didn’t conquer Taiwan in the 1950s is that the US Seventh Fleet impeded him from doing so. The US, in effect, prevented a formal resolution of the Chinese civil war and put it in abeyance. A final resolution of the Chinese civil war requires that one side (The PRC or Taiwan) defeat the other. 3. Taiwan is not going to defeat the PRC. The PRC will eventually and inevitably assimilate Taiwan. The only questions are when and under what conditions (i.e. peaceful via mutual consent v. bloodshed). 4. The American people will not tolerate a prolonged, bloody, expensive conflict with China over Taiwan. They have had enough with Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. 5. When China conquers Taiwan, the US officially becomes #2. That is because it would prove to the rest of the world that the US cannot defend its allies. This would precipitate a geopolitical realignment of Asian countries whereby alliances would flip in China’s favor. The result is that the US would be ejected from the Asia sphere of influence. 6. If China displaces the US, the dollar would no longer be the global reserve currency. The value of the dollar would fall and the US would no longer be able to pay its debts by printing money and will no longer be able to impose sanctions against countries it doesn’t like. Hyperinflation could very well ensue in the US. Serious consequences. With loose talk about Taiwan independence, you are playing with fire folks.

If Taiwan got occupied by China then Japan and South Korea will have a big economic problem and may also be occupied due to the influence or military intimidation. Once they occupied the big 3 they may start to spread influence and slowly occupying the whole Asia and it will be a very, very problematic for its rivals to stop them. @@somethinglikethisone6635 because Taiwan is not a country, it goes like this. Mao Zedong a dictator fight the Japanese and ally with an autocratic dictator to fight the Japanese off. When the battle is over, due to the high level of corruption of the ROC, the people rally around Mao who was seen as more popular. The US back the ROC and it's the PRC who wins. The ROC in accordance with the PRC exile themselves to Taiwan to avoid the repression that will fall on China. Taiwan or Formosa was formally in China, we are not talking of Mongolia type of territory or Tibet. Taiwan never had a formal presence as a country and will never have as it's not a country. Just like HK, the European and US diplomats try to push the idea that China could be toppled by an outside example of what a democratic China would look like. I mean if you can call Taiwan and HK a democracy which they never were just like Singapour. They are autocratic system based on a classist system where the elite rules. This countries where highly invested by Foreign assets as it's the place that allow IDE to china which was not possible for a long time. They were de facto the ally and at the same time a diplomatic issue for US and the EU (UK mostly who had huge investment in HK and US who had huge investment in Taiwan). Taiwan is as a country as HK is a country, they are just mini States that use a highly corrupted form of capitalism using the same tactics as the communist but the other way around. Its quit weird to hear Bloomberg not explain how Taiwan was created and by who... The Chinese elite that was toppled by communism, they were not children at heart or fierce defensor of western style of democracy. They are seen as a stain and a legacy of the century of humiliation brought by Europe to China. This will end by Taiwan and HK becoming Chinese again and the US will not have choice but accept because no country will come rescue Taiwan if they go into war with China. You can see it as a territory like the German territory that were lost to Poland after WW1. When Germany reclaimed those territory nobody nudged or moved a finger because it was accepted that it was not Polish territory. The war started when Germany wanted to invade France not Poland. Why ? Because nobody cared for this place in Poland that everybody understood to be German...

One thing lacks completely in this otherwise well-made summary of China-Taiwan-US relationship. This is that in 1990, KMT and CCP reached an agreement named 'ONE CHINA POLICY' in Singapore. KMT uses this agreement in domestic affair to mainly keep silent its biggest political rival, Democratic Progressive party and its followers and to manage the supports from the refugees population who still claim the reconquest of Mainland China - which becomes impossible.
@Ethan-rw7ub3 жыл бұрын
Careful now. It's 「一個中國、各自表述」, which translates to “both sides recognize there is only one China, but *_agree to differ on its definition_* ”. This definiion, to the CCP, is of course that the PRC owns sovereignty over all peviously-owned territories of the ROC (including Taiwan). On the other hand, Taipei understood this as reconfirming the ROC's position of being the only legitimate government of the Greater China region. It's basically an agreement with no agreement. It's just word games. Edit: add bold italics to text

@SoundsSilver , Nope. I don’t think you get it. Taiwan’s official name is Republic of China, which was established in mainland Chinese city of Nanking in 1912 by Dr. Sun Yat San. Taiwan is just the name of island. Basically the government there is the former regime of all of China. With US intervention, they were able to hold it. Taiwan was even in the UN as CHiNA until 1971 when votes kicked them out. It is still in their constitution that mainland China belongs to them. They also fly the same flag which was used in all of China. Taiwan’s largest airline is China Airline. Taiwan’s ID says Republic of China, Taiwan Province. Taiwan’s auto license plates say “Taiwan Province”. When the current president took office, she bowed to a huge photo of Dr. Sun Yat San. It was filmed. Go look for it. One of their territories, Kinmen Island is just 3km off mainland China’s Fujian Province. The ID issued in Kinmen says “Republic of China, Fujian Province, Kinmen County”.

Cuban Missile Crisis is a lesson that China has not learned. Chinese coastal regions from ShangHai to GunagZhou are within range of Taiwan-designed-made missiles. These are the same regions that are the economic powerhouse for China. Attacking Taiwan would see these hundreds of missiles raining on the economic infrastructure along the Chinese coast. The devastations to the Chinese economy would be such that millions of Chinese would definitely rebel against the CCP government. Many PLA units would join the rebellions. Civil war in China would ensue resulting likely the fall of CCP regime. JFK had to get the missiles out of Cuba so the Gulf Region of US would not be under missile attacks. The difference with Taiwan is that Taiwan already has these missiles. Twice Taiwan has been used as a base against China. Every general in PLA knows this and they understand the beauty of Taiwan as a fortress island. They know that taking Taiwan has only one purpose - to built it up militarily. Hence there would be missiles that aimed at Japan and the US fleets. But these same missiles also could be easily turned around and targeted against China itself. And China could not do anything about it. A 6 years old understands this simple logic about modern military technology and its impacts. Even if China took Taiwan peacefully, under any regime, sooner or later, Taiwan would be used again as a base against China if China does not give the island its independence. Modern military technology assures of this. Just ask yourself another historical fact. Why is that, in her 5,000 years of history, China did not want to take Taiwan till about 340 years ago in 1683AD? Why? The Chinese knew that Taiwan was so far from China that, once it had sufficient population size, it would be difficult to control. This was the same report by the general leading the expedition to Taiwan back to the emperor of Sui Dynasty, in the first decade of 600AD. The wisdom of old China is always correct in regard to Taiwan. At the end of the day, an island that's far enough from its nearest continent and with sufficient population size is always going to want her own independence. China would be better off just support Taiwan's full independence as a nation of her own. Peaceful co-existence with Taiwan is the only choice for China in regard to Taiwan.
@windcold45323 жыл бұрын
ignorance. On the issue of national unification, most people in China will always support the CCP. But in terms of freedom of speech, Chinese people may not necessarily support the CCP. These are two issues. China is a country with a history of thousands of years of unification, which is different from Europe and the United States
@perhapsme60053 жыл бұрын
@@windcold4532 Even you, given opportunity, would want to be the KING of Taiwan and get independence from China if you couldn't be the emperor of China. You know you could have missiles aimed at China to blackmail China and get away with it. Every PLA general and every German, French, British, American, Australian general knows the beauty of having Taiwan. Secondly, China never wanted Taiwan for they knew it was dangerous to take Taiwan. Otherwise Taiwan would have been taken into the empire before HaiNan Island which was brought in by WuDi 武帝 in Western Han dynasty in first century BC. HaiNan is the same size as Taiwan. Why is that WuDi took HahNan and not Taiwan? Simply HaiNan is only bout 40km from China. Taiwan is at least 140km from China. The difference is sufficient for independence for Taiwan. Even Sui dynasty sent expedition to Taiwan. The general in charge returned and reported to the emperor not to take Taiwan at all for the reason that the island is too far to be controlled effectively. (non-Chinese should read this about the difference between HaiNan and Taiwan bit again) Thirdly, Chinese psyche of unification is rubbish. Chinese history may have this pattern of unification. But the empire always fragments sooner or later. Usually within 150 years of founding of any dynasty there would be civil war and rebellions. Even CCP China, within the next 50~100 years will see (definitely) civil war or armed rebellions in some degree. It is the fate of China. Why? Because, every single Chinese person knows since they are 6 years old that anyone can be the emperor of China and changes of dynasties are just the natural pattern of China. So large number of Chinese at any one time hope that they could be the emperor of China one way or another. They just wait for opportunities for it. Most of CCP senior cadre and PLA generals are waiting for such opportunities as they re in the most favourable positions for such. China is so big in geographic size and population, being the king of a couple of provinces commands huge economic power that most European nations could only dream of. These are temptations sufficient enough. Even you want to aim to be such one day if given opportunity. This leads to rebellions as the inevitable fate in China. Again, in the next 50~100 years, CPC China will see rebellions and civil war in China. Just ask yourself why President Xi wants to be the president of China for life by abolishing the ten years term limit for the post of presidency. Lastly, In the last 5,000 years, more than half of the time, China was fragmented. On top of that, even those dynasties that are long lasting have never had, for their entire history, full control of China. Han (both West and East) did not control the whole empire at late stage. Tang, after 750's, did not control big chunk of Northern China Plain. Song lost most of northern China. Ming saw rebellions its last few decades and rebellions in SW too before that. And you would have heard of TaiPing Rebellion and another one north of it that devastated over half of China proper for 15 years till 1864. it is rubbish to say China is alway a unified nation. Chinese history and geography simply set the fate that China will degenerate into chaos in the next 100 years or so...... Many Chinese people also want to be the emperor of China. You would be happy to be the king of your own home province too... I, for one, will never live in China. My suggestions to western people that want to work in China to get their return plane ticket booked all the time just in case. Westerners, when you next meet a Chinese that live in your country, ask them why they left China in the first place. Probe into their motive deeply. Inevitably, they would say that it's due to the history of China and they are fearful of chaos and wars in China that will happen sooner or later. Just ask yourself why President Xi has sent his only daughter (child) to live in US......
