I've been Performing for quite some time. Pat has always been incredibly cool W/me. & as I got to know him, I've played most of his guitars. That Melody maker, ( Gibson ) has a Great neck !! U shaped. I hope he still has it ! PAF's ?? Perhaps. I found a couple exactly like it. ( Those body's are Sooo thin. ) Once routed, Very little Mahogany holding it together. & as you can tell, That 70's Tele, not enough gain to push his Non Master Marshall @ this gig, Barley turned up.. Not Nessasary gain. The Wah, helps a bit) I Played it in some drummers garage. I didn't dig it. I loved his Double cut LP Burst W/ Kahler. ( @ least 2 Headstock repairs, Done right by Doug & Bill @ The "Guitar factoty" Pioneers in Semi solid, Acoustic, guitars, Years ago. Great luthiers who repaied Odd stringed instruments of mine, NO one else would attempt to repair I had a metallic one W/ Odd Gibson P/U's. & an Explorer headstock. ( The Kahler wouldn't staying tune @ all !!) & traded it for a LP Special TV !! Around 82. SO Sad that Mars left us. Even though I'm a Guit guy, I do play Fretlesss & fretted bass. Mars was a Huge influence on me. Yeah he played "for the song" & Colored the changes in such an amazing way!! & was a great guy !! Hope all is well W/ Pat.

ANYONE REMEMBER HIM Playing at ‘Louies’ “Rock City”, Falls Church, VA, back in ‘76 -‘77? Pat saved my life! I was snuck out of intensive care from a nasty car wreck. Buddies brought in clothes. Unplugged me from I.V’s and “life monitors’’, ...Got me out...I was leaning against a pole in this “Tiki-Bar” kind of venue, standing room only...dried blood still in my long, guitar playing, hair...He recognized me from 1 year earlier, and ordered his men to get me to a seat...on the Grand Piano bench (which was not in use) on stage! He’s not just a great (genius) musician, but a great man too! Thank you Pat, Sir! Rock on! (I’m still trying to “Get BETTA”...LOL!) Back into guitar as a Disbled Vet with no other way left to turn..and guess who I decided to begin with? THE BEST! Wonder what ‘Life in London’ is really like? ;-) Thank you for your continued legacy! Nice PRS you’ve got!

@Metal Zboy I remember being transfixed watching him live back in the 70's. I'm a guitarist and love Pat; but how Mars weaved his magic and kept everything together was a work of art. He was never overtly flashy and always served the music... an enigma. He's the reason why the Pat Travers Band never sounded much more than a three-piece band. Forty years on I still marvel at his talent and subtlety. And another thing: it's fascinating watching Pat sweating like hell under the lights, wrestling with his Melody Maker and fluffing the odd note... meanwhile, there's Mars wearing his dress-shirt, smart pants, cool as a cucumber and never missing a note.

It is NOT a real concert, they just put an ad out for ANYONE to come fill the seats for the sole purpose of making it LOOK more entertaining as if a real concert, the staff tells them stay quiet until end of song, clap polite when they are shown an applaud sign, etc. Why dont you people get this. 99% of the people there dont care, dont know the band, etc.

This Travers video is a year before he came to Houston with Mahogany Rush supporting his Makin’ Magic LP. That's when he blew my mind. July 16, 1977. It was that exact lineup. Mars & Nicko. His sound had become very refined just a year later. He had switched to the Gibson Melody Maker. I went to that show with a friend who was a huge Mahogany Rush fan. I remember leaving that show thinking, "yeah Frank Marino was pretty good but this Pat Travers guy, he's my new favorite!" When they first opened the doors that night to the Music Hall, we ran down the aisle and I heard this guitar and it just sounded so amazing. It only lasted about 2-3 seconds at most. And right then I saw a quick glimpse of Travers walking off stage right. Of course I didn't know who it was until later, but the sound of his guitar for those few seconds was strikingly robust and just awesome. Big & bold. I bought Makin’ Magic and spread it around my small town like wildfire!! Go P.T.!!! 😉

I AM HOOKED ON PAT TRAVERS' MUSIC SINCE 1977- 45 YEARS AND GROWING!!!
@loraljohnson10 жыл бұрын
Man, you can hear that ADA Flanger in this performance. That was a real key effect for Pat Travers early sound. He used that effect like Robin Trower used the Uni-Vibe. For guitar junkies that don't have one, what made it unique was it was voltage triggered. So the harder you played, the more effect you got. But the way PT plays, you pretty much hear it all the time ... LOL Until this video, I have never seen PT play a Telecaster before. I don't remember Mars having a mustache. This is great music, regardless it's 38 years ago!! wow
@mikewalsh731810 жыл бұрын
PT is pictured the Tele (and Mars with the mustache) on their first album, same white bass, too.. I'm digging seeing Pat with that Telecaster.. Really bare bones tones, (as opposed to the Gibson)
@loraljohnson10 жыл бұрын
Mike Walsh Well, I'm embarrassed. As much of a fan as I am of PT, I always thought "Putting it Straight" was his first album. And now that you pointed that out, I see the cover photo is the same image that is behind them on stage. Thanks for Putting it Straight to me and now I know... Even Stevie had to Stop and Smile when he saw me Feelin' When some people get an idea, a light goes on over their head, but right after your statement, my brain went Boom Boom... (out went the lights). Some would say it Makes No Difference ir It Ain't What It Seems, but they should just go prune their Magnolia. I listen to PT a lot in my car, well, it's a Navigator, no Hot Rod Lincoln, but Maybellene likes it. As My Life Flies, many songs in my head are just a Medely in parts (1 & 2), but with Dedication I'll remember what you taught me today. Whether here in Delaware or if I were to live a Life in London, perhaps Runnin' from the Future on some Off Beat Ride, things only are Gettin' Betta. I appreciate you didn't "flame" me in my error but instead chose to Speakeasy.

Mike Walsh this may sound stupid but what model tele is that? is it like kieth richards plays?
@loraljohnson9 жыл бұрын
Scott Clark According to an interview in the January 1980 Guitar Player magazine, he was asked what guitars he used on the Pat Travers album: Answer: "A black Fender Telecaster Custom with Fender humbucking pickup in it. I've still got it." (Quote from Pat Travers in that article). Although, I have also read that he used PAF pickups in that Tele. Both may be true, it may have started with the Fender pickup and he may have later replaced it with a PAF.

While "Go For What You Know" is one of my all time favorite live LPs (I still have it on vinyl) I love the 3 piece band he has here. I saw one of the last tours Mars Cowling did with Pat. Mars was this little guy with a huge bass! AND NICKO!!!! I met Nicko with my kids after an Iron Maiden show in 2006 in Boston. Bruce & Steve Harris came out first & were very nice & polite but when Nicko came out I told him I remember when he was with the Pat Travers Band & told him I still have the LPs. Nicko became really animated and talked to me & my kids for a while. I took photos of my kids with Bruce & Steve & was getting ready to take a photo of Nicko with my kids & Nicko said ... "Hey Dad, you need to get in this one!" He asked a guy next to me to take our photos with my camera LOL. Nicko was awesome. My Daughter was around 13 ish & my Son was 10 & Nicko squatted down so he could talk to him on his level. Nicko was a real gentleman with ZERO ego & just a guy who seems to love having fun. It was awesome to see how excited he got when I mentioned I had his LPS from the Pat Travers days. I was always an Iron Maiden fan especially during the 1980s but it was my kids who begged me to get Maiden tickets. They had been raiding my LP collection & loved metal/heavy rock. The LP covers caught their attention as well LOL I am glad I went because it was such a high energy show & Nicko was none stop, actually the whole band was. I remember reading an interview with Pat Travers years ago & he talked about first meeting Nicko & the early days of the band. He said Nicko always dressed like a pimp back then LOL!! I saw Pat Travers in the late 1980s maybe 88ish? Jerry Riggs or Grigs was his other guitarist on that tour. I saw them at a small club in Boston called the Channel which closed years ago. It was EXCELLENT! They came out & just nailed one song after another. It is up there on my top 10 list of favorite shows. My friend who went with me who has seen as many shows as me(probably heading into the hundreds) said it was one of his all time favorite shows. I love it that Pat Travers never really changes either. His hairstyle & the open shirt. I am a guitar player & I always felt Pat Travers was/is criminally underrated. Thanks for posting this! I noticed it was posted in 2013 but I just came across it tonight & have not seen this 1976 Rockpalast show in well over 12-15 years so it is a real treat. Earlier yesterday afternoon I turned on an old friend to Pat Travers (and Robin Trower) they had never heard of either of them so it is fitting I came across this. I can hear "Go For What You Know" in my near future! :)

Thanks for posting this! For those not understanding the audience golf-clapping, it's a German thing. They are very appreciative audiences, just subdued in that era. Search "Rory Gallagher Shin Kicker Shadowplay" for another great example. Rockpalast has to be the greatest venue in the world: such outstanding production values.

Have been fortunate to see PT several times over the years. Last time he played with Johnny Winter at the House of Blues in Disney Village in O-town. He completely blew Johnny Winter out of the water; the show was fantastic.

I would have liked to have heard "It Makes No Difference" Best song on his first album. Seen him twice back in the late 70's Early 80"s. He never disappoints.

And while this show was going on, there was a young guitarist in Pasadena California covering Pat Travers songs who would take the electric guitar world by storm.
