As soon as I saw this older gentleman pop up under another video I was going to watch I immediately clicked to watch. I wish my Dad was still with us, he always had a big beautiful bountiful garden. I just said to my son I wish Papa was still here, he would know how to fix this blossom end rot. I'm new to gardening. I will definitely try these options out next year. My Beefsteak tomato plant is showing signs of rot now. Will these products help my plant now? Thanks again 😊

Leon, can you publish a paperback book (maybe spiral bound so it's garden friendly) so that we have something in our hands to go through your plans? I'd really love to have some of these tips written down, like Ruth stout did. Ps you remind me of my grandfather. He was a Kansas farmer.

Same problem here. This year was my first year for wicking tubs. It was my worst year ever for tomatoes unfortunately. Lots of blossom end rot. I read up on it and yes, it is a lack of calcium. But it is also because of too much water which keeps the plant from taking up calcium. I just cut down my tomatoes and dissected my tubs. The bottom dirt was almost like mud....too wet. I have redesigned my wicking system with a plastic disk insert that sits about 5 inches off the bottom of my tub. I cut a hole in the middle that is the size of a nursery pot and that pot sits down into the water reservoir. I put my filter cloth inside the nursery pot and pack my soil into the nursery pot. Now I have a smaller amount of soil touching the water thus reducing the amount of wicking. It is very similar to your video of using cans from the school lunch room and leaving out the center can thus a smaller amount of soil in water contact. In addition, I have added pellitized gypsum to my soil this fall which is a great source of calcium and does not alter the PH of the soil. As a wrap up....too wet of a tub prohibits the take up of calcium by the plant so that is something for folks to check. Thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge.

Determinate varieties are annuals while Indeterminate tomato plants are perennials in their native habitat, but are cultivated as annuals. The fruit of the tomato plant is actually a berry. (Check your Botany Science Textbooks). Many different things can cause Blossom End Rot. Much has to do with irregular watering or too much watering. Either way tomato plants are extremely sensitive to both and either causes a change in how the tomato plant manages calcium absorption to the berries (or fruit if you prefer). We frequently will attempt to remedy the problem with various types of amendments of all types from sprays to powders, tablets, fertilizers, etc. Some vegetables can grow with little attention but tomato plants do require more attention than some other vegetables from insects, diseases from soil and airborne pathogens etc. Nice Video Mr. Leon

Thank You Leon for investing your time to let the gardener is know what to do about their blossom end rot. Speaking of Rutgers, they are one of my favorites and I have not had any problems with blossom end rot with this type of tomato. Even though they may be a higher acid tomato I just love the flavor of them.

Allan Larmour Here’s a complete description to answer your question as to “What is Tums?” From Wikipedia: “Tums is an antacid made of sucrose (sugar) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline in St. Louis, Missouri, US. They are also available in a sugar-free version. It is an over-the-counter drug, available at many retail stores, including drug stores, grocery stores and mass merchandisers. It provides relief from heartburn and indigestion ("sour stomach").”

Did you ever wonder if it was this milk/epsom salt application that stopped your B.E.R.? Could it have been something else like a change in heat, humidity, water availability, etc.?
@pamelaroden5513
@pamelaroden5513 4 жыл бұрын
@@priayief i am sure the milk mixture and epson salt stopped it. It is a fast fix for blossom end rot. Epson salt helps the plant absorb it quickly. Then you have time to address the main lack of calcium issue in your soil. It works well.

@@pamelaroden5513 I have eight 4 ft x 4 ft raised beds. In two of them I grow a mix of peppers and tomatoes. I occasionally get BER on a few tomatoes (and never on the peppers). Not enough to worry about. One season I applied an epsom salt solution to one bed containing a mix of tomatoes peppers and the other bed (with the same mix of tomatoes and peppers) I added nothing (except compost and water, of course). I found it made no difference. Years ago I did that same kind of thing with some kind of weird and complicated compost tea. That didn't make any difference either. For me, the only way I can convince myself that a particular tip actually works, is to do this kind of test. Otherwise, I find I'm just falling into the "confirmation bias" trap and wasting my time. Cheers.

My Roma's are having the biggest problem with blossom end rot. Grape tomatoes are still going strong. Patio tomatoes about done. Getting a good crop from Celebrity now. All were planted at the same time in the same soil so I am guessing that the Roma's have a higher need for calcium.

The late Dr Carolyn Male was a microbiologist who had a love of tomatoes. She was a force on the internet on multiple tomato forums. She had raised over 1,000 different varieties of tomatoes. She was known as the Queen of Tomatoes to many. As a microbiologist, she wrote the paper about BER in the link shown below. The lady knew what she was talking about. EXERPTS: Blossom End Rot (BER) is one of the most common tomato problems seen in the early part of the season. It is a physiological condition, not a disease caused by a fungus, a bacterium or a virus. Therefore, it cannot be treated. Some data strongly suggests that foliar spraying with Ca++ is of no use because not enough gets to the fruits to do any good. And it's known that the sprays for fruits that are sold are useless. Many books and magazine articles tell you that by adding Ca++ in the form of lime or eggshells, for instance, that you can prevent BER. That does NOT appear to be true. University field trial experiments have so far failed to show that BER can be prevented by addition of Ca++. BER is a physiological condition, cannot be cured, and current literature data suggests it cannot be prevented. It occurs on some, but not all varieties of tomatoes, is usually seen early in the season and then stops, for most folks. www.webgrower.com/information/carolyn_ber.html

There are better sources of free Ca for roots to take up into fruits, I would imagine. Ca nitrate, Ca sulfate, gypsum is probably one of the best, tho my wife thinks gypsum is only good for loosening clay soil, which we don't have. My tom soil is mostly composts of various sources, ferts, bone meal, work castings, perlite, peat moss, a couple other amendments, maybe. I would think milk would be something that would sour or not do roots any good. A well known glue is made from a milk product. No thanks, I'll stick with Ca sulfate, as sulfur salts are beneficial to the plants as well. My organic supply store sells hundreds of 5# boxes to gardeners and it isn't because soils are clay -- it's because it is the calcium toms need to prevent BER. Cheers, fellow gardeners. Bob
