I did not know that you're watching covers. Always thought you don't like them :D Thank you, I really appreciate it. But what's up with that lick at 4:05? I cursed a few times after transcribing and practicing it. Just a weird finger breaker. I tried to change the fingering to play the low notes with my ring finger and pinky, but that was uncomfortable too.

@@hyramjackson lol that would make a lot of sense playing wise. But I didn't really think about it like that because it's a variation of that first lick and I'm not sure, because I have to listen back to it, but I think it sounded like the first note is picked. I don't think Ron plays that lick in the rehearsal video either, so I couldn't check.

@@joshanddamion Haha, why would I not answer? I practiced Paganinis 5th a lot when I was younger. I'm not sure how I'd play it these days, but to be honest, it's a pretty popular piece among shred guitarists and there have been plenty of great versions, so I don't have any reason to do it haha. Back then I always practiced the Jason Becker interpretation :) I've been arranging some bits of other classical pieces recently. What about some spawn of possession now that you have a seven string? Or even a classic metal or a non metal cover for a change. If you could incorporate that into your style it would be amazing. Just a suggestion. I love your vids :)
@KevinHeiderich
@KevinHeiderich 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. My next pro-shot video will be a classic metal song ;-) But yeah I feel you. The thing is, while I can play stuff that's not metal, metal is my area of expertise if you can call it that. So that's where my playing shines. I'm a huge sucker for playing with "feeling" for the last couple of years and I'm improving there good, but it's still not where I want it to be. So for stuff that's not metal there are probably a lot of guitarists that are better than me. That's why I don't really do that on youtube. And I have noticed, for youtube it's the best to focus on something, where you are unique or better than a lot of people. And for me that's playing hard metal songs :) But don't worry, the stuff I write these days is not strictly tech death. More like what I learned from tech death mixed with the sound and style of Tigran Hamsyan (minus the Jazz, I'm not good at jazz xD)

how does one even go about learning something like this?
@KevinHeiderich
@KevinHeiderich 5 жыл бұрын
Just start ;-) haha. Well I did have an official tab for this one. So that's the starting point. Then it's the usual stuff. Going from section to section until I have everything down, and then it's the full song on repeat until it's clean enough. For this song I had to practice those rhythm to lead transitions and a few leads gave me trouble for various reasons. You probably want to know about the time signatures and weird timings, right? This song is pretty straight for a Jarzombek. Time signature wise it was easy to get. Though I just noticed that the majority of the song is in 5/4 lol. You see? Didn't even feel like it's not 4/4 for me. So, for Blotted Science and Jarzombek stuff it's important to get a feel for syncopation and being able to play all the tuplet variations. So 8th quintuplets and 8th septuplets are something he uses a lot. Or transitioning from those to a straight note value. That's hard to get a feel for. The section at 1:52 is a good example. Don't know if Ron did that on purpose but it's supposed to be two bars of 8th septuplets followed by two bars of straight 16th notes. But he started quite fast on the septuplet section, so that was solely based on feeling for me. And maybe he did have trouble too on the record or he liked it that way. He also has a few of those 8th triplet to 8th quintuplet transitions which can be hard too. Tip that I use for those sections: 8th quintuplets feel like dragged triplets/sixtuplets with a note missing. The first band where I learned that was actually Defeated Sanity. They have that often too.

Man, if you think about it, one take videos are easier to make, and are more convincing. Ironic.
@KevinHeiderich
@KevinHeiderich 5 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. "Easier" in one way and way harder in another. Miming a video convincingly takes some time especially if there are a lot of slides and other stuff where you can see if it's not on time with the audio. But in the end you don't have to worry about playing sloppy or anything or even playing it properly, as long as it looks convincing. One reason I don't mime is that it's kinda annoying to know that you are basically cheating and if people will notice and maybe call you out. It's just cheating, that's what it is. So yeah, it's not easier. Playing a song accurate and not sloppy is freakin harder, but both methods have their difficulties. (Also what sense would it make to claim to be able to play hard stuff 25% faster if, in the end you are just acting to the audio). I don't really care what other guitarists are doing. There's only one guitar player that annoys me, or his reputation for being clean when most of the stuff he recorded was edited. Don't get me wrong. That guy is clean as hell but most of the stuff I heard and transcribed was definitely not "real" playing. And I don't mind mimed playthrough of peoples own music. That's what I will do as well when releasing my own stuff.
