Mini-skirted mods, swinging London go-go scenes. Cool 1960s fashions. The Yardbirds with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

As I recall, we were picked up outside the Hammersmith Odeon at about 08:00. I don't remember all the direction. Initially when we arrived at the Rikki Tic club we were given black tee shirts to wear. There was a lot of down time in the morning where we were hanging about inside the club and outside by the river, so they could shoot close up's or other scenes. ( The catering for the extras was terrible I remember, nothing like Grand Prix) In the afternoon we were inside, the band were playing. We were dancing, cameras moved in and out, I never made the final cut. At one point we were crowded round the front of stage, the band were not on, but movie magic weaves scene and action together. Those are my best memories of the day. We were not needed after that. I seem to remember standing next to the girl in the big yellow hat at one time.

I saw those Yardbirds at the Studio Club in Dallas, Texas. It was also a small dance club, about the size of the one in this film. Everybody stopped dancing and stood gaping at the spectacle that was to become Led Zep. It was too novel and amazing to keep paying attention to your girl and your moves. Page blew me away when he used the cello bow. There was no stage, they set up and played on the dance floor, and I was within 4 feet of Page. What an experience.

I saw Blow Up when I was a kid, don’t really know how. Ended up getting it on DVD years ago because I liked it. Then, in 2019, this scene basically happened to me. I got attacked by a concert crowd after getting part of a smashed guitar. Someone onstage just stuck it out and handed it directly to me after the curtain dropped. There were a group of girls just jumping on me, ripping pieces of wood off of the guitar body while it was in my hands. There were so many splinters. The major difference is that I had the body, not the neck. And I wanted the guitar, so I ran away and then wrapped it in a space blanket so nobody could see what I was carrying. So I come here to relive the moment. 😂

I absolutely love two things that this video shows us! First, you can see for a brief few moments, the 1959 Fender Tele that Beck Gave Page! This is the original one that later took on a different look created by Page. Second, I don't think it takes long for any accomplished Guitar player, to hear the Rage in Jeff's style of Playing and hammering like strums. This video briefly captures it, in its physical manifestation. Love it 😊

That whole scene has an interesting history. Antonioni originally wanted the Who in that scene doing My Generation with all the destructive pyrotechnics. The Who wouldn't do it, they might have been on tour during the time they were going to film. or something. So the Yardbirds were asked to be in the scene. They originally were going to do their signature live opening "Train Kept a Rollin'" which was written by Tiny Bradshaw, but became a country hit by Johnny Burnett. The Yardbirds couldn't get the rights to do "Train" from who ever owned the song at the time [I think it was Bradshaw's ripoff producer], so Keith Relf and Chris Dreja came up with new lyrics, but same melody and called it "Stroll On". For Yardbirds fanatics like myself, I went nuts when this scene came on. I had no idea that the 'birdies were in the movie. BTW, Page was originally recruited to join the band to replace bassist extraordinaire Paul Samwell Smith, but the group put Dreja on bass and then for a wonderfully brief moment in rock history, had Beck and Page trading leads and rhythm. Their single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" is a rare example of their tremendous creative potential. But Beck either split or was tossed out of the group [egos] and there are a few good youtube live recordings roaming around. I'm sure some of you surviving 'birdies fans know the whole story better than I do. But they are my all time favorite British Bands from the 60's.

Jeff Beck was a mind blowing guitar player. When I heard he'd passed I played Truth. Still one of the greatest albums of all time. It's been a few years since I watched Blow Up.
