Blowing Up The Giro D'Italia | Chris Froome | Fuelled By Science

It will be remembered as one of the most sensational days in Grand Tour history. Chris Froome was 3 minutes 22 seconds behind Simon Yates in the pursuit of the maglia rosa leading up to stage 19 of the 2018 Giro d’Italia. The Colle delle Finestre, an 18.5km climb sat in the middle of the stage, was the only realistic option to attack the leaders with only two stages to follow. The stage was set for an unbelievable comeback and one of the strongest rides you’re likely to see for years to come. Here Chris explains what it took to pull off such a staggering attack.

Lemond in '89. That was a real comeback. He raced and won purely with talent. There's not much tactics in a TT. He raced the hardest stages of that tour without hardly any team support too. Froome's breakaway win here was impressive. Can't deny that. There's not nearly enough go for broke breakaways in cycling anymore. Spontaneous and exciting racing has changed for the worst thanks to tech, race radio and power meters. Everything is planned and predictable.

I have been watching all the big bike tours for 60 years. This 19th stage was definitely one of the most spectacular I have ever seen. Chris Froom was amazing. I didn't think such an attack over 80 km was possible at the present time.

@clean cyclist It looked like Froome was pulling a Landis, but in reality Landis rode 150km solo against the peloton, where Froome rode 80km mostly against Reichenbach, who did much of the pacing and was waited for in the downslopes, with Dumoulin contributing and setting the pace in the final climb. Pinot contributed somewhat but stopped after Sestrieres because he was worried about Lopez, and Lopez and Carapaz never putting in an effort for 70km and spent the final climb participating in vain attacks.

I’m Dutch but a huge fan of this man because as far as I know he’s humble and a real sportsman who is so determined and has such a high perseverance... However people still exaggerate his stage win in the Giro because Dumoulin didn’t have a team to help him and it was 1v1 fight for about 80 kilometers and when you have nothing to lose and your gaining time you get so much motivation and energy and when you’ve everything to lose and losing time you get demotivated which causes that you lose energy. But still a legendary performance.
