Watching videos like yours here is absolutely priceless. I learned so much about cars and how to avoid disastrous repairs thanks to youtube. One of the key things I learned is to stay on top of the basics: Rotate your tires, change your tires appropriately, keep an eye on the brake/steering/radiator fluids, and oil changes every 5000. And of course, regularly scheduled maintenance.

I swear I cannot make this up but I just came through a very heartbreaking experience. I had found a 2016 Jaguar xjl portfolio including the full rear seat massage, laptop trays and memory options. The price was too good to be true so I decided to check the Carfax that came with the car, and called the last dealer who did the maintenance which was a Jaguar dealer in Austin Texas. I asked the service advisor who picked up my call as to if he could share the service that they did on this car since the car was hardly driven and sold within a few months after that last service. He said that due to privacy reasons he cannot share but what he can share is that the owner denied the major maintenance recommended. So I asked the million dollar question - what was that maintenance? He said it was a blown head gasket. I said okay...so how much was the cost and he said approximately $16,000!! So I think most of us can connect the dots from here - most likely they used the cheap aftermarket head gasket sprays to cover the issue and sold the car in the market to get rid of it...maybe... And that's how I ended up on this video...

Coolant leaks, water pump and plastic coolant pipes are the talk of most Jaguar owners with V6 & V8 supercharged engines on a lot of Jaguar forums. When a new member joins in with a new Jaguar, other members on the forum chips in to warn of this problem that can be preventable. On a 2.0 L4 like mine on my Jaguar XF, I've NEVER read of any issues of blown coolant pipes.

If you don't want another blown engine, switch to Evans Waterless coolant. It removes all pressure from the cooling system so your plastic coolant parts, water pump, and heat exchangers/radiators don't have to hold up to 20psi. The radiator cap is 20psi, so that's what the system has to endure. Waterless coolant doesn't boil until 350F, while regular coolant will turn to steam at 212F, if the coolant system develops a leak. So with a leak in a waterless coolant system, you will not have catastrophic engine damage. All modern cars should switch to waterless because they all run hotter (200F thermostats), they are all delicate aluminum engines, and they all have plastic cooling system parts to save money. A horrible combination and the only good solution is to get rid of the pressure and raise the boiling point using some brand of waterless coolant.

This is great content and seems very helpful. I have a 2010 XF supercharged Jag and just had a low coolant light come on. Took it to Jag and they topped it off. So I didn't see coolant leaking and it never ran hot. They told me to take it home and monitor it. Next morning restricted performance light pops on and I take it back over there. I think I need to do this compression test a to confirm nothing is wrong besides maybe the crossover coolant line. May replace complete tank reservoir which contains coolant sensor too. Good to see you again but under better circumstances would have been better. I don't think many people would routinely pressure test their cooling system. I have been working on my cars for 50 years and don't have one. Didn't the Jag have a "low coolant" warning? My 2008 Range Rover had a warning. Looking at the coolant tank showed it was low. I just topped it up without further investigation but a few days later my brother noticed water dripping onto the ground under the engine. Investigation discovered a leaking cooling system hose which I replaced myself.

@@oxmanagain wl Well that is a bummer. I have had two water leaks on my 99 Range Rover, the P38. One was a slow leak from a hose that eventually caused my coolant temperature to go up however I have installed an AutoMeter water temperature gauge which I monitor closely and was able to shut down when I saw temperature going up. Topped up the coolant, drove home and fixed that. The other time a plastic T in the upper radiator hose broke apart. The steam coming out from under the hood was a give away😆. Jury rigged it together and was able to drive 150 miles to home. Neither of my cars are worth $11,000 🙁.

Would have said the same thing. You get to destroy your engine in one of two ways, or both; running it without oil or coolant. Hence almost all cars have level sensors for both. If the oil level sensor is out, the dipstick is your friend if your car has one. Most still do. If your coolant level sensor is out, check your coolant bottle every so often but most important, keep your eyes on the temp gauge at all times. Its right there in front of your eyes. That head gasket job was rather expensive as all that was needed was a new head gasket and skimming the cylinder head.

You still should get pressure even with very little to no coolant because the air would escape. A closed head gasket is still going to hold air just like it would hold coolant. So you still should see it holding.

I plan on now renting the pressure tester and taking it up there when they say it’s ready to be picked up. So my question is when I do go up there if the pressure stay solid and don’t move my head gasket good? If it do move after a water pump and thermostat change then what that mean?

If it's solid then your head gasket is good like you said. If it moves it just means you have a leak in the system somewhere. Could be in a holes or something like that. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a head gasket it just means there's a leak in the system.

I have a 2015 F-Type R I think its the same engine as yours, I'm worried about the y coolant pipe under the supercharger and that cross over pipe in the back as well as the water pump too. The way the engineers design these parts is so stupid, a three piece water pump? Really? so dumb and those two pipes shouldn't be plastic in the first place and each pipe is actually two pieces that's seemed together instead of one piece which creates more failure points. What are the engineers thinking making the parts more complex with more failure points and probably more exspensive. I guess that's why Jaguars have the reputation of being so unreliable and why there in trouble, such a shame because they make beautiful cars that are enjoyable to drive.

2015 F-Type R Coupe, here. Never had a low coolant warning but did have my coolant system serviced under warranty/recall. Two years later, my motor started to have misfires on bank two. 20K Dollars later, two different shops (1 Jag dealer & 1 Jag specialty shop) and still having the same problem.... found out that the head was lifting from the 2nd dealership (3rd shop).... $14k for the repair (that's the cost on the F-Type R when they have to get to the head) $34k, and the car sat for a year because of that problem alone. It's a supercar through and through all the way down to the costly maintenance and services. Spent 60K in maintenance/service, including Velocity AP Stage 3 for three years of ownership. I got to drive it about a total of 6 months due to the time it spent in the shop and working out of town. All that to then get totaled out by a truck right after getting it back. Amazing car. Getting it serviced early like I did and never going cheap still isn't enough. I will most likely own another one in the future now that I know a lot more about them and can get a few things done to prevent major repairs. It's far more exciting to drive than a 720s on a daily basis. I say that with experience, not assumptious opinion.
