Beautiful cars. A buddy of mine bought a 2 year old (at the time) version that still had warranty. At only 2 years old, he had US$30k worth of warranty work performed within the first 3 months of ownership.

Wow that's terrible. Thanks so much giving us further light on the reality of owning cars like this. Later in my research I found an individual with a new Jaguar XF at the time who had his vehicle in the shop for 114 days.

We bought a 2012 XF portfolio and have replaced fuel pump and alternator, one strut and that’s it-other than a coolant leak-which we are going to take back to dealer today. We bought it with 42k and now it has 78k. We’ve had it for 4 so years

Owner of a XJ-R575 for the last two years, on the back of 9 yrs of XF ownership. Love my XJ, especially the sleeper aspect. Catches so many cars out, here in the UK. Reliability hasn't been an issue. I'd argue that modern Jaguar XJs are as reliable as anything else out there.

Bought my wife a 2013 XJL Portfolio in Caviar Metalic and Cashew interior with piano black trim from Car Max with 35k miles plus extended warranty. Only thing that has gone wrong is the coolant reservoir went bad, 1st OEM replacement was bad also. We only have 60k miles now, never used the extended warranty. Transmission shifts so smoothly in concert with velvet smooth engine. I do get a slight steering wheel shimmy while braking about 40mph, mechanic checked, rotors had slight warp, mechanic said rotors made from very hard material, couldn't resurface, would need new ones. Brakes done last year so leaving alone. We love the car now owning it for 6 years, my wife is still, well Gaga over it. So much power 385 hp NA, no regrets at all, nothing but compliments about it. What a beautiful rear end, taillights are stlyed with the Jaguars claw in mind, roof was inspired from motor yachts upper deck. Great video, was interested in the timing chain issue, oil changed yearly at authorized independent shop at or below max 5k miles. Would we buy another...Yes!!!

My 2014 XJL also had the low coolant light come on, the engine stalled on Dallas’ Central Expressway while on business from Houston with just AT 50,000 miles . $30k later I have a new Jaguar engine. NO after market engines could be found. Out of warranty and NEVER use Endurance as a contract “extended warranty”. The cause of the failure was a plastic coolant hose broke, dumping all the coolant in seconds. Ruined the blocks and heads. Endurance said they would replace the failed part, the broken pipe (a known issue), but I was SOL on the damage it immediately caused. I HATE that I love the car so much. Thanks for the vent.

bought one new in 2017 and I have 56k miles on it now. I have had zero issues with it. Garage kept, 5k oil changes, and drive it like a baby. I suspect my driving habits as something to do with reliability.. Interior needs mindfulness to stay looking good especially the black trim. Im happy with mine, looks brand new, and turns heads. It's a car that you need to treat right.

Brilliant guide. I have been very lucky, and have owned a S-Type, XFS, XE and currently own a XJ R-Sport, which is just a dream - classy, elegant, powerful, with an incredible road present. The ONLY car I would consider to replace the beautiful XJ is possibly a F-Type, but.......two seats.

I appreciate what you’re doing here. 04’ XJR owner for the past 9 years, that car has been nothing but reliable, aside from old suspension components. But hell you don’t expect tires to last forever can’t expect suspension bushings to either. Grounding issues are also a thing with aluminum bodied cars, causes all kinds of electrical gremlins. Looking at potentially getting an X351 to keep mileage off of my pickup truck. Since I do all my own work I am thinking even more about a newer xj.

There is one right now that I’d love to buy with just 38,000 one owner miles. Appears from CARFAX it’s been well cared for including in CA at that very expensive High dollar auto European car company. I forget the name. They shipped it out there for the winters then sometimes drove it back to the Midwest or shipped it. Regular oil changes and only minor repairs. Idk. I love it.

A very good review. I have a 66,000 mile 2012 5.0 Supercharged Portfolio (short body not the L, yay!), pretty much full spec, eg illuminated sills, the Bowers system etc etc. I am the 2nd owner. This is the SC car prio to release as XJ-R and in NZ so some specs may not be the same say for US models This is a great car, and I have had Ferrari's, different Mercs etc and currently also have a Merc SLS Roadster so I love cars. I can run them very hard so bear that in mind on the maintenance below. Most of the work done by a Jaquar dealer including every annual and that will continue. Here is my add. 1. Car started stalling in drive and on the move. Diagnosed that an air intake was separating from the air intake system buy why? It was an engine mount issue, 1 mount was really bad, 1 not so good. I replaced all 3 mounts. Note I use full power evry now and again so get engine wanting to move so puts more stress on mounts. 2. Brakes. I have installed EBC Yellow part nos DP42076R and DP42059R. I have the big factory rotors also, Will stay with factory rotors. 3. VERY IMPORTANT. All X351s until sometime build dates sometime late 2012 will get corrosion in the sunroof area and must be rectified. The corrosion is due to mounting the steel frame that holds the glass roof onto the aluminium body. Electrolysis occurs due to the material difference. This is basic engineering 101. The rust started appearing immediately and a factory fix was introduced by adding more sealant coatings. But unless you happen to look you would never know. I looked because I started to get water in the front pax footwell. There is plenty of stuff online how to rectify the damage and prevent it occuring again. Do it early though so you do not have to detach the front glued glass. 4. VERY IMPORTANT for all years and not known by many service departments if any. Water ingress in front footwells. I was told various things to fix like take out the entire roof to see if the corrosion had gone further, OR rip out the entire dash to look at the aircon system. 2 years to find the issue and I was the one that found it, not Jaq service or any panel shop. The water ingresses through the front firewall. The water comes down from the windscreen and is meant to go through a drain system that starts on the roof. What happens is the drain system gets blocked over time eg from road dirt/dust, maybe bits of old leaves etc. The water backs up and there are parts of the fire wall that act like compartments. There are holes through the firewall for whatever that are sealed but the sealant overtime degrades. I found holes with the sealant sitting there but detached. The water then floods in. You should make sure the drains are cleared in service from beneath the car. Also look at the roof esp with the previous roof issue being a factor. You could also reseal the firewall holes too.

I always recommend buying any used car with a little over 100K miles instead of super low miles..... Used cars with higher miles that still run good most likely had everything wrong replaced and done with.

You recommend buying at 100,000 miles? That’s high mileage guy. I would never buy any luxury car at 100,000 miles except maybe a Lexus LS. You will have problems on any car after or long before 100,000 miles! Buy used at 20-40,000 miles with CARFAX and maintenance records.

I think overall, these vehicles can be a bargain under 15k for the type of vehicle you're getting. Much like most luxury vehicles, they're not the best at reliability and are meant more so for a night on the town than as a daily due to cost of parts and maintenance. And they wont be as bad for someone like me who only drives my current car like 1 or 2 times a week, if that at all. Wich means fuel costs are kept down, due to less useage, and parts wont fail as often also due to lack of use. So if anyone finds themselves in a situation like mine, so long as youre aware that parts are a bit more on the pricey side when something does fail (and youre bringing in more than 300 bucks a week 😅) you shoukd be able to safely afford the car without much issue. However I do agree, that if youll use this as a daily and ut will be tour main form of transportation and youre looking for something reliable and relatively cheap, please heed this mans advice and look elsewhere. These are beautiful, comfy, and fun driving cars, but those maintenance costs alone will make you regret your decision. If you still want to get one, used or otherwise, get your finances in order, the average cost of maintenance is almost $2,000 a year thats not taking into account gas prices, among other expenses

Loved the old jaguar xjs, …that’s the v12, right. I’m old enough to remember days they were always parked in the mechanics lot. Like the old quatroport. Back in those days the Audi & “art of engineering” reputation was killed by uncontrolled surges… not good time for cars, also had the pinto, maverick, pacer… pick your horrible car. Then, if I recall jag had a few ownership changes, but they never seemed to capture a reputation of being any more reliable. Honestly, I didn’t even know/consider the xj. Am kinda curious about the supercharged v8. But it seems they made substantial improvements. Doesn’t Tata now own jag? is higher quality attributable to them? Are they made in England or India? I know Tata from IT consulting & seems they are now into most everything these days. Thanks for the insight, I’m sure someone living near a jag dealership can have a ton on fun in a family hauler. Days of buying an expensive car & discount only to pay a lot more in maintenance are done… but I’ve done it & don’t regret it. These days I’d try to score a Toyota century. 😀
@MeynMotorGroup
@MeynMotorGroup 4 ай бұрын
Tata did own Jag during the production cycle of this XJ and I guess reliability went up a little bit with them owning but it's still one of the worst. They mainly just used Tata money to fund the production of these vehicles, cars were all still made in England for the most part. Tata recently sold off majority of Jaguar Land Rover shares to a Chinese company so they're most likely going to end up like Lotus very soon with a bunch of EVs in the lineup as that's where the industry is headed anyway. If you want a Toyota Century def check out Duncan imports my friend they have a lot of old school Japanese cars and right hand drive vehicles.
