todays video I am going over the case study of my P0303 code that I experienced one day in my 2003 jeep tj wrangler with a 4.0 motor. I have taken all the viewer responses and creating a video. todays video is looking for a blown head gasket. 3 major tell tale signs of a blown head gasket are
1. big plumes of white exhaust behind you while driving.
2. seeing antifreeze and oil mixed appears to be milky
3. constant loss of coolant either from burning or leaking out somewhere.

Scrap it? 4.0L head gasket replacement is totally doable for a person with average skills in his or her garage. Cats can be done too. For under $500 in parts both jobs can be completed twi weekends (if you really take your time). The way people so easily throw things away these days blows my mind. $500 and personal time is a lot cheaper than spending $10k-25k on a “new to you” used Jeep that may or may not have the same problem in a few thousand miles.

IIRC... at least on my Dodge Durango, a couple years ago I had the head gasket go bad and the a/c and heating smelled like sweet / burned coolant. It was blowing very little white smoke out the tail end, hardly noticeable. When mechanic took everything apart, found the head had overheated and warped, enough to send it to a local shop to be milled. Looked brand new when they got it back, installed, new head gasket and water pump... runs like a champ. Wish I could say the same for the swapped front diff. Still makes a lot of noise, I replaced the driver's side wheel bearing too. Should replace the passenger side wheel bearing soon, but haven't had the time or money. Not putting a lot of miles on it these days. Getting some suspension work done on it soon, minor, probably new front tires too. Going to have my mechanic replace both valve cover gaskets too, they're slow-leaking the past couple months. It's bled me to death the past couple years $$$ guess I just have an attachment to the old work-horse. Damn good in snow that's for sure. And generally been pretty solid and reliable over the years.

Squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is up to temp after driving, if it is very very stiff and possibly slightly ballooned, your up around 15 psi, mist caps as you probably know pop at 16 PSI to relieve the excess pressure, in your case if it's that bad you will completely fill your coolant bottle and blow out its vent then when it cools down it pulls it back from the tank, I've seen it lots on 6.0 fords and cummins diesels and the coolant bottle or overflowing when hit and say towing. In there case they have a degas tank, and the coolant gets pushed past the cap, duramax diesels and fords, as well as dodge after 13, seems to bet the better way to go, rather than the overflow tank.

Labor is the expensive part. It’s more than just a gasket. Other things will need attention more often than not as well.

Exactly, the gasket is pretty inexpensive, but you crack open an engine, you may find a lot of stuff to do. Valves, rings, bearings, and block and/or cylinder head resurfacing.

@@christophercorrado2406 I just learned that the gasket itself is cheap.. it’s the stuff u have to deal with around it expensive lol I wish they just changed the name to “top engine block” lol

I have old oil residue in the same area on the block. But no signs of head gasket failure. What did your leak end up being?

Or go to junkyard and if in luck find another engine that has been tested and in good operating condition.

Yeah mine crept up to $5000 eventually but back then I didn't have a second vehicle, and riding a motorcycle everywhere in the cold weather was starting to suck, haha. Good times. Oh, that includes the diff swap and some other stuff too.
