I have always preferred Blu-Ray. I used to have a decent 4K setup until the TV took a shit. I had several 4K Blu-rays, and a 4K player. Hell, even standard Blu-rays looked great on it. But once I started using a 1080p TV again, I just released that Blu-ray is just the best, and best value. I have no need to spend 20-30 or sometimes maybe even close to 40 dollars for a 4K Blu-ray, when I can usually find most Blu-rays used for 10 dollars or under.

@@megamikethemovieman It was a gift from my FIL when we moved into our house, and had been used for demos for his business. About two years later, the LEDs burnt out in several parts of the screen. Had no warranty. I paid to get it fixed, and about two months later, the same thing happened again. I tossed it after that.

I preferred the 4K and I’ve never had an issue with the desk. I’ve just started collecting the 4K and I think they’re amazing and wonderful and I will spend the money for them versus the blueberry.

I feel like 4K is more geared towards collectors with the best TV and the best sound systems. For the average person Blu-ray is fine. The main benefit of 4K is a lot of releases are going back to the original theatrical colors and really bring out the colors. In the Blu-ray age they messed around with DNR a lot and tried to change the colors for whatever reason.

The opposite is true of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull the Blu-ray is representative of the 35mm bleach bypass, the 4K redid the entire color timing to look like the first 3 films. That was Spielberg's choice fair enough, but I liked how it looked in the theater that almost silver like tint in some scenes. I'd also like Minority Report if it gets a 4K to be representative of that look not how it looks on Blu-Ray.

I’ve just begun my journey into this realm. I’m picking my most favorite movies to start with that I absolutely want to own and rewatch. All of them so far have the 4K and Blue ray versions included. So I’m happy with both. I like the 4K so far though. I do need to get a sound bar to utilize the atmos some of them are coming with but I’m a 4K guy so far and like the bonus of getting the blue rays too.

A well done 4k is better than a well done bluray. I've also noticed newer blurays usually are very superior than older blurays. (I'm not talking about the age of the movie, but the bluray itself, bitrate can make a huge difference.)

@@megamikethemovieman I only upgraded from DVD 4 years ago, straight to 4k, for a while I had a couple dozen 4ks, but no blurays. But as I found movies I wanted that were not yet in 4k I started buying more blurays. It's probably even now, but there are a few particular favorite movies I'll wait for the 4k. I did give in and buy Tombstone on bluray, but found it wasn't a whole lot better than the DVD. I learned the transfer was very early on, some more recent transfers of other movies I've found are far better and don't see the need to upgrade them.

My thoughts, if you can play 4K Movies like the Avatar's they have the dynamics you want in a 4K movie. Then buy the rest in blue ray.

Blu Ray's are so good in quality that a 4K upgrade is relatively minimal in comparison. Not only that, but the new HDR grading and Dolby Vision just adds too much complicated stuff for the common consumer. Leaving the 4K at SDR would be much better for the format and would be more beneficial to the quality as a whole. So overall, Blu Ray wins for those reasons alone.

I disagree with the HDR argument because most 4k. Players and TVs are compatible with standard HDR. Dolby vision is just it added Plus for people with higher end TVs and players. I would say the only downside is finding a player. It takes a little research for the average consumer. I think Blu-ray is great correct color grading and vibrant colors. For some reason with Blu-ray they always want to mess with the colors. I assume to make the color stand out but 4K accomplishes that with HDR and using the correct colors.

well the fact that new 1080p tv's are non existence should be a major factor..since at the end of the day thats what your going to be looking at. The reason the price of blu rays are cheaper is because they have been out quite a big longer than the 4k versions.

4K is fine but the price cannot be too high. For Robocop, I will pay more for the Arrow 4K. The Fugitive on 4K is definitely an improvement due to its HDR. But Gremlins? Just give me the cheap Blu Ray 2 disc set. Same thing with the Purge 5 disc set. Blu Ray is enough and much cheaper.

Depends on DNR and detail. If the 4K is in HDR and does it have Atmos. The increase in resolution over Blu-Ray is very noticeable. Star Wars was amazing. The Atmos was freakin incredible, I can't replace all my laserdiscs, DVD and Blu but I will upgrade some movies. I just ordered Indiana Jone 4k film collection in 4K, I have all the Star Treks except the director's edition in 4K, all the Star Wars films in 4K. New stuff I'm just going to skip Blu-Ray and go straight to 4K like whenever an anime is available in 4k I'm getting that.

Way less convenient than jumping on the laptop and streaming but I don't really like streaming. I feel like its quick and convenient but a worse investment because you own nothing.

4k is superior, but u have to have the 4k player and the 4k TV and the surround for atmos. I basically only collect 4k movies now and there is no skipping on my Panasonic player. The biggest con is the price, the movies are very expensive. But bluray is perfectly fine for anime shows.

Bottom line you get what you pay for. I bought my 4k player at Walmart for $80 bucks and it’s absolutely beautiful! 4K images are the top of the line, end of story

Looking for a PROMETHEUS 4K that will not break my budget. Had a GOOD MORNING VIETNAM but it was a factory defect, 😭 had to return it. Still looking for a replacement.

The difference between Bluray to 4K isn't much and the annoyance of having to calibrate your TV for 4K viewing is ridiculous, I only have a select few 4K's so I guess Bluray wins.

I had to pay over 200 dollars for my 4K player, and some go for $500..... I can see why this format isn't catching on with the normies. Then if you want to buy a 4K new release it's more than likely going to be $29.99 before discount, the discs themselves aren't very affordable for most people...... don't get me started on the boutiques.

A lot of smaller budget cult films probably will never get a 4K anyways because the original elements just aren't there to make a proper transfer. Making 4K transfers is a lot more complicated and expensive than a blu ray transfer.

4k has better resolution, but over all picture even using hdr gimmick is darker over all or just looks washed out depending on tv, expensive tvs their just darker, on goid, budget tvs that a normal average person can afford it varus wich it is if not both, we're blu ray and dvd has great brightness, with not washed out, unless that's how you have your tv set up for everything, wich out of box can look, along with usual more natural looking colors over 4k wichnis usaly over corrected, so I stick with blu ray and dvds over 4k, if movie I don't own, I sometimes buy 4k and blu ray combo pack if their Is one, but I watch the blu ray from those packs 9 times out of 10

Good points! Why do you think they change so much with 4K in terms of the coloring, etc. Why not keep it the same but have the increased resolution?

Films get brightened for home video some 4K are representative of just how dark their theatrical prints were like Batman and Batman Returns. Others overcorrect and are more washed out and darker than the 35mm releases like the Star Wars trilogy, where the Blu-Ray was overly bright and black levels were crushed. Both too much DNR the Blu-Ray disc was overly processed and sharpened, audio cleaned within an inch of its life leaving zero fidelity, For Star Wars a New Hope as it became to be known. At least the 4K audio is much improved and it sounds way better. The Blu-ray also had fake grain added to replace removed grain. That doesn't appear to be the case with the 4K but there is frozen grain. The 8K scan of Wizard of Oz in 4k is mindblowing just revelatory, so is 2001 a Space Odyssey.
