Today we've got a question from a BJJ Blue Belt, named Tye, who recently pissed off his Brown Belt training partner.
He's a young guy & the Brown Belt was someone who essentially took him under his wing. Well, the other day they were rolling, and Tye caught the Brown belt in the Guillotine.
The Brown Belt does not tap, Tye makes multiple adjustments, and at some point, 4 or so minutes in, after the Brown Belt escaped, he bashed the Blue Belt for the rest of the round.
After they got done rolling the Brown Belt was obviously pissed.
Tye sends the message asking what he should have done in this situation.
In this video, I'll give you a specific tip to prevent this from happening again. I'll also discuss the higher belts perspective and what he could have done.
Hopefully, you found the answer useful Tye, and for anyone else out there who has had this situation happen to them, I hope this helps you too.
Thanks for watching.

There’s a fallacy in that logic, as in if that’s the case then the higher belt should never let the lower belt do anything but just constantly submit them and smash them. We need to be able to trust our teammates so instead of wrenching on a submission that’s not working and possibly causing injury, just move on to something else then ask how to improve.

At this point in my training/injury curve, I just take it as my loss for letting them get a clean hold of my neck in the first place. Missing training from a sore neck is a net negative relative to tapping out.

Great advice. As someone with neck surgery done. It’s really not worth it. One bad crank and I’m screwed for 1-2 weeks and I have job family like most. Be the solution so it benefits everyone. And also in the end guys… he got out of the bad position so it wasn’t good anyways for the tap part. Having the technique and choke he would’ve tap in 6-10 seconds max. Make the technique legit but with the neck crank for someone tough it won’t work but just make them not want to train with you. But yes talk to each other let these egos in training go. One just thought he should be better than me for some reason and I could feel his agro energy when we were rolling so I smothered him and cooked him on bottom. I then went from threatening kimura to paper choke back and forth till I wore him out and then paper cutter choked him. He got pissed and smacked me in the head to tap. I only cooked him because he was being a dck. He apologized after wards and acknowledged he was being a dck. The other time another coach was playing leg locks w me and I guess thought because he was a higher belt he was better at playing leg locks. Well I trained leg locks since white belt and did a leg lock class once a week for 3 years consistently and many years off and on prior to that. This gym, the only one he ever trained at and the one he got his belts from, didn’t really do leg locks because it was a traditional Gracie gym. I was surprised he started playing leg locks but I figure ok, he’s playing leg locks so I’ll do leg locks and spun out of his lame toe hold and caught him in another leg lock pretty hard. I slowly applied pressure allowing him time to tap and he got up and he started yelling and talking sht after he tapped. Super lame. I had to leave that gym because of the agro bs sht like that.

@@hedark1135 I agree. There are times where the submission isn't there and you're just holding, but there are tons of times where it just takes a little adjustment and a little patience to sink it in properly, especially when someone is resisting super hard but not trying to escape. Lower belts may not always feel the difference, so they end up holding longer on things that aren't there, but that's how we learn.

I had a similar situation a couple months ago. A blue belt training partner who is a lot taller than me, put me in a foot lock. He has a reputation for being overly aggressive, and I tapped. I had been a little lazy and felt I should amp it up a little to start matching his energy. He put in a foot lock again, and I tried harder to get out. This time he decided to go even harder and ripped on my foot before I had time to tap. I felt a few pops, and knew right away I injured something. Afterward, I talked with him, and he told me he felt he should give me a challenge because of my higher rank. Well, two months later and my foot isn't any better. It is not wise to put blame on the Blue belt in this situation. The blue belt has less experience; he does not know if he is cranking or close to a choke. The more experienced black belt should have tapped. Ego and pride got in the way of the black belt tapping. My advice to the Blackbelt is to tap as it will prevent injuries. My advice to the blue belt is to avoid sparring that particular black belt as he prefers to potentially get injured instead of tapping because of pride.

In my third week of training I caught an ankle hook without knowing what I was doing. Just saw a foot and thought, “Well, I know it’s not supposed to turn this way! Let’s try that.” My blue belt partner immediately verbal tapped and coach told me to avoid submissions that use a foot as a lever against a knee for now. Nobody got hurt, no feelings got hurt, and I understand now why what I did was so dangerous. That blue belt is my go-to training partner now, and he’s hugely accelerated my progress by talking through things with me mid-roll when I ask. I think Coach set the example for us to have a dynamic where we can pause at any point and ask questions. It’s really cool to get that kind of partnership at such an early stage of my training.

Yeah see, because I'm initially on the blue belt's side here. No good reason for the brown not to simply give the blue the tip he needs or, either just get out, or tap, and continue the roll then give him said tip afterwards. The four minute neck crank is more on him, from what it sounds like. I have a feeling it was a matter of maybe the blue just pulling upward on it without the cradle-the-baby kinda motion or something simple like that. Would have been an easy fix. If you ask me, cranking on someone's neck for several minutes is absolutely crazy. People really need to be education about the potential causes for chronic neck/spine issues if they are going to be training in something like BJJ or wrestling. That kinda stuff ruins peoples' lives after a few years of training with bad training partners; if you like being able to do physical activities like grappling, martial arts, sports etc., you should really take that kind of thing seriously and really try to avoid causing those kinds of issues to the people you train with. People act like it's not a big deal and just part of training, but you can EASILY avoid over 90% of the stuff that causes those issues just by being considerate in training, and you won't think it's not a big deal once you start losing function in your peripheral nervous system and can't do any of the activities you used to love all because some morons took no issue with trying to crunch on the vertebrae in your neck for a chance at "winning" a friendly roll. About a third of the people I've known who have done BJJ for a decade or more eventually had to quit because of those kinds of chronic injuries and can't really do any kind of contact sport/activity because of those problems.

When I go with those guys, I’m gonna match that energy and as someone with previous wrestling experience, I can play those games too. The only guys I will do that with are the ones who like to make me suffer when I roll with them. If your technique is good, you can show lower belts that you’re better than them without doing that stuff and if you are doing that stuff, you have no room to complain when it comes back your way.

Martial arts is about consent. Tapping out is the removal of that consent, that's why continuing after someone taps is assault. On the other side of that, NOT tapping means you consent to what's happening to you.

I’m having trouble with this story. How does someone hold a guillotine for 4 minutes. It takes a lot of energy to hold it for even a full minute, and when it his arms get tired and he loosens up , I can’t imagine not being able to slip out. Between fighting hands and forcing my head out I just don’t see it.

I’m a purple belt and this just seems so odd. 1. Forsure ego if you’re not willing to take the pain from the neck crank just tap. 2. A brown belt rolling with a blue belt and being stuck in a guillotine for 4-5min??? I don’t see a scenario where that would even happen just cause of the skill gap….

I just think it would be common sense people don’t want you to crank of their necks for 4 minutes.. if the choke isn’t there in 10-15 seconds transition off to something else, then at the end of the round ask how you could have finished it. Sometimes people are strong and they squeeze for their life so getting out can be difficult but they’re not improving playing that way and being a shitty training partner as well

@@kingcthulhu1716 Just to clarify, it's a gym owner across town that is the drunk guy trash talking about your respectable gym? I'd say take the high road and be the respectable gym compared to the trashy one across town. When questioned say something like "I don't have anything nice to say about that gym owner." and then just let it be unsaid. The other guy is a drunk idiot only making a fool out of himself so let him. He has no control and that will bite him in the long run sooner or later.

As an alcoholic in recovery I would suggest finding another gym if possible if your owner is a drunk. You can somewhat maintain a “normal” lifestyle as an alcoholic but it’s toxic and not sustainable. Maybe try to talk the guy into rehab?

4-5 min with a guillotine in progress. THAT is just really bad jiujitsu. Like a bjj instructor once yelled at his whole class: if its too long, switch to something else, your submission isnt there. Any decent grapplng student must learn to transition/switch from one sub attempt to another sub attempt, to another one, and another one. Not all submission has to be a sub, you can use this submission as a controling move, for God's sake. More, use it as a sweep move, yes: a guillotine can be used to sweep the guy you hold. More, guilltotine attempt, back take, more, more, and there is more, the beauty of jujitsu.

Something that can happen is putting some1 to sleep and u thinking it's not working. It happened with a Von flue choke and arm triangle.... I applied pressure for 5 to 10 seconds max.... and then go to move as I think it might not be working meanwhile my partner went to sleep. I can only imagine if some1 had got it and just kept squeezing for 4min

There are 2 issues. Brown belt has a big ego staying in that crank for minutes, either escape or look after your neck. The blue belt by that stage shouldn't be holding on for 4 minutes with. At blue you should know to transition to someone else eg 100 sweep. 2 big egos there. Why didnt the brown tap and say it wasn't a choke it was pain fair play lets go again. Same for the blue hanging on for 4 minutes. They deserve each other 😂
