This is not a review! But rather, an extremely up close look at how Blue Chip picks do wear over time! Whatever these picks are made of is very durable material but after years of use/abuse thru very high magnification you can see clearly here how they hold up and why they always feel the same. You never have to break in a new pick again if you use these. I do not endorse them and have no connections with the company, tho I like them very much and use them this is just to show you the picks like you've never seen them before. TD = Teardrop shape, 80 = 80 thousands (or 2mm) thick. Plus I touch on a possible upcoming contest! A free pick giveaway contest is coming soon! You MUST be a Patron to enter so go sign up and pledge now! Thanks for viewing!

I might have to check these out. I've been using gravity picks and it seems lile as soon as I get them worn to where i want it, a couple weeks later it gets too worn out. Great information brother! Rock on!

That's exactly the trouble I was having, get them feeling and sounding right and in a few weeks had to break in a new one all over again, I like these because they always feel the same, if you lose one and start over with a new one it already will feel just like the one you lost. Thanks for checking out the video brother!

I'm astonished at how little wear the used pick exhibits. It's pretty extraordinary. I can confirm that Gator Grip picks wear as if they were made out of butter. I have a TP60 which is my favorite pick, but I haven't been able to bring myself to use it for practice, because I just feel guilty putting wear on it. I guess I should put that aside and just use it.

I just ordered my very first blue chip. I've always preferred the medium fender celluloid picks since I started playing. So I just ordered a TD 60, and a little cherry wood box to hold it and my other picks. Im having my name engraved on the pick. I sure hope it feels right and is the right thickness, cause I despise a thick pick. Wow, cant believe I just spent this much money on one pick! Lol

Hey Randy, since posting this, can you comment on if it holds up well to pick scrapes? I know the material is said to last a long time with normal playing, but just curious how it holds up to something like pick scrapes, where most other picks/materials would immediately get a groove worn in them. Thanks!

Dear Randy: The number designations on the Blue Chip Picks are for the inches option of your caliper. These picks can be shaped and polished just like Tortoise Shell.

I've never used such a thick pick before, though I've been contemplating one for my jazz guitar. With that said, I'd love to try one of these out, but at that price, I just can't justify the risk of not liking it :(

In case anybody is interested in how BC got started: Nov.2009 article: Musicians call company's picks best sounding, best playing By Morgan Simmons BlueChip Picks Web site Toss a BlueChip pick into a fire, and it won't melt. Step on it, and it won't break. Put one in your hand, and you have what a growing number of professional bluegrass musicians say is the best sounding, best playing pick on the market. At $35 apiece, they better be. Matthew Goins and his four-man crew run the BlueChip Picks company out of a small machine shop on the outskirts of Knox County. When not making picks for guitar and mandolin players, they manufacture special parts for semiconductors. And it is that work that makes Goins keep the material used for the picks a secret. "We're just five old country boys who stumbled onto something good," Goins said. The first BlueChip pick was made four years ago after one of Goins' machinists who plays guitar decided he needed a pick that would outlast tortoise shell, the Holy Grail of pick material that can no longer be purchased legally because it comes from an endangered sea turtle. Working with a piece of high-tech material, they fashioned a guitar pick that delivered clear, rich tone. Because the material was self-lubricating, the pick slid smoothly off the strings, yet it was easy to grip, even with sweaty hands. There was no doubt that the pick had potential. What Goins couldn't figure out was how to make the picks remotely affordable given that each 10-inch-square, half-inch-thick piece of the material they were made from cost $4,800. "The material was so expensive, I could have easily said 'I don't waste it on picks' and walked away," Goins said. "I'm mighty glad I didn't." After months of brainstorming, Goins finally developed a manufacturing system that enabled him to sell his picks for $35 apiece. People bragged on the picks' tone, grip, and speed, but for the most part, they remained a secret shared among a few pickers around Knoxville. The turnaround came at the 2007 Fall Homecoming at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, when Goins gave a few picks to Danny Roberts, mandolin player for the nationally recognized bluegrass band, The Grascals. The following week, Roberts called Goins, and they talked picks for almost two hours. "I asked Danny if he thought this was something worth pursuing," Goins said. "He said, 'I've searched for the perfect pick my whole life. As far as I'm concerned, the search is over.' I was blown away." Rather than sink a lot of money into advertising, Goins travels to Nashville and lets his picks do the talking. Renowned mandolin player Chris Thile is a recent convert to BlueChip picks, as is Dan Tyminski, Rhonda Vincent and The Steep Canyon Rangers, to name a few. Scott Houston, guitar player for Knoxville's Pick 'n' Grin Bluegrass Band, said he gets better tone and playability from Goins' picks than any he has used. "You get a BlueChip in your right hand, and your left hand better keep up 'cause it's going to get left behind," Houston said. Goins sells his picks around the world. They come in nine different shapes and various thicknesses. All told, he manufactures close to 30 different styles. As word of BlueChip picks spreads over the Internet in chat rooms devoted to mandolin and guitar pickers, Goins has been shocked to see his product discussed in foreign languages. "Before all this, I had no idea people could get so passionate about picks," he said. "I'm tickled to death, but sometimes I feel like saying, 'Man, it's just a pick.' "

Man, that Earl is out of control. Sounds like he couldn't wait to get you off camera....lol. Good stuff.... Those picks must be made out of some really tough material to only have that much wear after 3 or more years. Hell, if you don't lose them, 2 would last forever. Better keep your eye on Earl though, sounds like losing a pick is the least of your worries...haha..Take care, my brother. Great video. ( Those camera lens are AWESOME)

I tried hard to find out what kind of material these picks are made of and they will not discuss it at all, the only thing I could get out or the Blue Chip rep was they could only make them this color, that may have changed by now tho I've never seen them any other color than this funky brown. Yeah man I should send Earl down to Blue Chip, he could probably sweet talk them out of the information lol Thanks for having a look brother!

Judging by the wear on the edge it appears to be a phenolic plastic. Same stuff used in the manufacture of billiard balls, knife handles, and electrical insulators. Extremely tough stuff and resistant to abrasion. On the Rockwell M hardness scale, with bone being rated 103, phenolics are rated in the 142 range. It's harder than nylon (110), acetal (120), Ultem (128), and acrylics, e.g., Plexiglas (138). The brown color is a pretty good giveaway that it's cut from baked phenolic sheet.

Thanks for posting this, I would agree because one of the things I wanted to know was after the pick got worn down would it still slip across the strings slick like a piece of glass or would it become rough and scrappy like sandpaper feels, I've learned that no matter how much wears away the picks maintain that smooth glass like feel and sound across the strings even tho the worn tip appears to be scratchy.

Man I've never seen that beveled pick like a propeller sort of. The only other one I've see was one I got at a Vinney Vincent concert he opened for Ozzy once he played w/Kiss for a while I got one Hot Pink lol . Man that was one of the best picks I ever owned but I lost it like I do all picks. I still have a Yngwie Malmsteen Pick well two I caught one & my son caught one when Yngwie was kicking them out into the crowd it's super thick. How much are those Beveled Blue Chip Picks? I've tried to shape picks like that but to find em per made would be great. I call it the propeller pick.

These picks are costly but the tone is second to none. Very low pick to string noise with a nice bright attack. Very smooth across the string. They also do not get slippery if your hand starts to sweat while playing. I prefer a new pick so as it starts to wear I just resharpen it with 400 grit sandpaper. I usually have to resharpen it after a few months. They will get slightly smaller each time you sharpening them but they still will last for years. I use the TD35 or TD40 and they are around $35. Well worth the money in my book!
@donalddenison8896
@donalddenison8896 7 жыл бұрын
Dear Randy: The Goins will not divulge the material used these picks, I've been acquainted with them for a few years now, and they are very closed mouthed about it. I do know that it is an industrial material that is very expensive thus the price of $50 for your .080 thick picks as opposed to the $35 I pay for the thinner .050 picks I use. Unlike you, I like the triangles having used tortoise shell since 1956. I got the tortoise triangles and shaped them to a radius on all three corners that matched a penny. I had the foresight or perhaps it was just good luck to buy a small drawer full of tortoise picks at the then going price of $1.50 each with a large quantity discount subtracted because of the large number I bought just prior to them being placed on the embargo list. The seller wasn't so circumspect and continued selling with both the buyer and seller having to face legal consequences, the seller did some serious time due, I am sure, to his multiple offenses. For years I have supplied picks to musicians I met at a Bluegrass Festival where I worked as the Entertainment Coordinator, whose techniques were tied to that tortoiseshell pick, I never sold one, just gave them away when the need presented itself. Since the Blue Chip came on the market the requests and the need for the tortoiseshell picks has gone away, I have only 3 left, and myself use Blue Chip picks. The Blue Chip exactly matches the qualities of the shell picks they are stiff, without being thick, they don't get slick when used and the players hands get slippery, and they can be shaped exactly the same way that we old farts did our shell picks. No one, even the nationally recognized artists that I have provided picks to in the past comes to me to help them anymore which is a good thing as I don't have a supply any longer. The last time I was at our festival, the Goins had a booth and I was able to try out everything they had that interested me, and have settled on the large triangles you don't like in .050 thickness. It is my observation that there is a greater variation in 'shell picks naturally than there is between the 'shell picks and the Blue Chip picks. Moreover the Blue Chip picks are consistent in how they perform and one can be assured that once he find a model that he likes, the next one will be exactly the same. They last at least as well as 'shell, they can be dressed and polished just like 'shell, more importantly they behave exactly like 'shell. This should end the hazards incurred when using 'shell picks, just pick out one that works for you shape it or not as you please, and forget worrying about the Feds busting you, or providing paperwork proving the pick was bought before the embargo. This is a great product, made by really good people, I won't buy anything else. Sorry about the length of this message, but players should know about these picks and forget about the tortoiseshell ones, there is no longer any need to involve oneself in illegal trade just to get a pick that works well. The Karma was bad in any case, the pressure on the Turtles was enormous, and we were in danger of losing them, it is better this way.

Still a way to get tortoise shell picks, and legally. A friend of mine buys old antique lady's compacts, mirrors, and such made of pre-embargo shell, cuts them up and makes picks from them. Can get costly that way, though.

Thanks Randy. Finally bought at CT55 @ current $35 engraved with my name and a free pouch and free shipping. And thought I must be crazy. Could hardly play for a few minutes. Maybe made a mistake? But then WOW! This is what my bluegrass instructor has been trying to get me to do with My 66 Martin D-28 for the last two years! So I just bought a second one just in case I lose this. I’m used to buying a dozen at a time and being careless with them. Oh, and please quit smoking. I finally have all the guitars and money I ever wanted and retired. Now I have been diagnosed with severe emphysema. Good thing I quit when I did (2/28/2001). Biggest raise I ever gave myself. Now I can afford all the $35 picks I want (but I may need a lung transplant to enjoy them for long.)

Randy, ya got me thinkin....I am curious about the material used in those picks as well and I am wondering if they aren't incorporating microscopic ceramic "balls or bearings" what ever they would actually be called..... Because that material would explain the longevity and wear resistance. The question then becomes, "what about the string wear in the pick contact locations"? Now that you have them there Fancy new lenses, why not do some investigative camera work and lets see what that portion of the strings look like! Also, have you or anyone that you know, ever used picks made from the dense bone material in deer antler? Thanks for another great video from the HTNS......Hows the Q?
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 7 жыл бұрын
That is an EXCELLENT idea! Because no matter what strings I use it doesn't take very long to start seeing the wound strings being ground away! Thank you for mentioning this, I will definitely put this in my notes and do a video on it, you can really see where these picks dig in and with these lenses I should be able to get some really tight shots of the wear. I have used bone picks before but they were from elk horn, they didn't take very long to wear out but that was when I was playing every day and playing a lot. I don't know of anyone trying deer antler but that might be a good thing to try. Q is great, we just got back from a ride in the truck, she loves riding! Been outside most of the day with her. Thanks again for the string wear idea, that should be a cool video! Coming soon! :)

howdy folks!. i seen where randy, and mike discussing the possible material these are made of. randy you mentioned string wear from the pick, and mike mentioned ceramic. inevitably the material is stronger than steel, or at least brass. dupont makes a thermoplastic polymer that is replacing steel parts. there are some resins stronger than steel. what gets me is you would think other colors would be available if in fact it is some sort of resin. what would piss me off is to find that they can make these for 50 cents! i would have cockle doodle damn sharpen my spurs!........hey i don't know, but just thought i would put in my 2 cents.

That would suck if they can make these picks so cheaply and selling them for a small fortune! Whatever it is it won't bend at all.

No known cure for it but neurosurgeons tell me I can retrain my hands, that's a lot easier said than done! I've been working on retraining about 6 months now and some days can actually play guitar. I pity anyone that gets this disease, especially musicians. Then last September 2015 my grandson accidentally closed a car door on my left hand, nothing broken but it sure didn't do it any good. We just have to hang in there! :)

I used to say the same thing, but I was gifted one as I wouldn't buy one for myself. I've got a Pick Pocket on my keys, it stays in there when it's not in my hand. 2 years and 20-30 shows later I still have it. Mine was $35 as I like their version of a "thin" the TD35 (even though it's more like a Fender Medium on steroids). When you're aware of the cost, you figure out how not to lose it.

I use the Blue Chip tp50 that way you have 3 points instead of just one point it took me a little while getting used to it a little bit bigger pic but when you hold it right and of course its speed beveled and back to holding it right when you put it on that sweet spot on your guitar and get that tone oh there's just nothing like it LOL in the Guitar World 😎😎😆😈

Exactly right! I had to learn how to pick with it to get the best tone but once you do it's a keeper for sure!

Just lost my favourite pick. It had the "speed bevel" worn into it and everything. Never kept from losing one long enough to wear it down nice before. Interesting. Hi to Qb , the Bear and the Bucks. Please ask Earl to keep his tongue in his head... HOLY SHIT... 50 AMERICAN DOLLARS?!!!!!!! I use the 15-cent ones. But then I'M tighter than 2 coats of paint.

Randy. Guitar Centers leaves those ole red cheep ass picks laying on the stools in their stores. $25.00 for a Blue Chip. Nothing for a GC guitar pick I've swiped? Do the math! My blind banjer picking pal has used Blue Chip picks for eons (aka 40 + years). Swears by them. So Blue Chip vs stolen picks nuther words. But I own Dunlop 2mm picks too. My maw was in the iron bizness Paw was in the steel bizness. She irons and he steals (so do I).

They sure are, I talked to Matthew Goins on the phone and he wouldn't even hint what the material is, I did find out tho at that time whatever the material is they could only make picks brown in color but that may have changed by now.

Gorgon of Black Marsh , it is worth it. I have tried almost every pick out there, also the primetone. No other pick has that little wear, it lasts for years. Primetones i can throw away after a few gigs. Also the tone it produces is like no other pick; i like it very much. And the grip is also top notch! So they are 100% worth the price to me. My choice is the TAD 40 or 50. They have 3 sides with exact the same point, so 3 picks in one. I have this one for about 3 years now and now just turned it to use the second side. So this pick will last for 9 years at least! A bargain realy!

the thickness of a pick doesn't say much about how flexible it is. I bet this 80 number is not a thickness related but it is its modulus of elasticity. Check this table out www.engineeringtoolbox.com/young-modulus-d_417.html An 80 means its pretty stiff. A 50 would be much softer if my theory is correct.
