On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being "poor" and 5 being "exceeds expectations", where do most of your experiences fall? This is the simple story of one of those rare times when I was given a 5.
*After seeing dozens of comments either applauding or criticizing my stating my preference for the Blue Chip picks I feel I should add, this is not a video about a pick. It is a video about a life experience of mine, both with my family and with the Blue Chip company that exceeded my expectations.
It was not in any way my intention to say, "Go try this pick. It really worked for me." That would not be in keeping with what we try to do at five watt world and it is not what I'm doing here either. Even when I do a specific review, I try to keep it in the context of the history of that piece of gear and its impact on music and the history of guitar gear development (see the Nobels video for an example of that.)
So do I really love my BC pick? I do. Am I telling you what you need to spend on picks to find that level of satisfaction, absolutely not. Thanks for understanding the difference.

So instead of doing something productive this morning, I dumped out my assortment of picks. I sorted them out by size and shape and discovered that the really worn ones were almost all two very similar shapes of virtually identical size. Fender Classic Celluloid Jazz 551 heavy. There are a few smaller Fender Jazz picks, a few mediums and 2 thins. Funny thing is I didn’t realize that I had zeroed in on that pick.

Over the past year, I have migrated from electric guitar to electric and acoustic mandolin. I just picked up a CT 55 blue chip. Worth every penny. Insane tone improvement and speeeedy trem picking so I can get my Garcia on!

LOL! I thought I was one of the few pick snobs that was crazy enough to spend a fortune for a pick. My peers gave me a hard time for years for spending what they called a rediculous price for a pick and when they asked me to try it, my reply was, "buy your own as they are special for your playing style". I was not about to share with a doubting Thomas as they wouldn't understand. Not only did I buy one but, I went a little over board and have 4 different styles that fit the feel of what I want to play. Each, unique and each is a FIVE, like your videos... Cheers!

I fell the pick is the most neglecting tone element of stringed instrument. I was sitting next to a guy at a jam and he said why does my guitar not sound like yours. I said it’s mostly your pick. He tried mine and said wow. Blue chip may not be for everybody but it is for me. Another great presentation. Thanks

Absolutely. Just within the world of cheap nylon picks there is a massive range of tone. Pointed vs rounded, overall length and diameter, and of course the material. I can barely tell the difference between 80/20's and PB strings on my D35, but change between a .73mm smooth nylon and a 1.14mm tortex its almost like a different instrument. Even knowing this I've still never purchased a premium pick as I know I'd lose it within a day or 2. Had some nice rosewood picks that were wonderful paired with a flatwound-strung archtop, but I lost all 3 within a few weeks, lol. Need to get organized...

What's insane is the guy who owns the company lives right down the road from me in Knoxville. His wife used to babysit my brother and I. He's genuinely a nice guy and it's a really small operation. You'd never know he made some of the best picks around.

Keith, I love your channel and this video really hit home for me. Your emphasis on respecting and honoring service that exceeds expectations is spot on and makes me respect you even more. And the fact you were praising Blue Chip picks also made me very happy. I played jazz trumpet long ago in college, but took up the mandolin a few years and have been seriously working at it the past couple of years. I was never a bluegrass guy growing up, but began to love David Grisman, Mike Marshall, Chris Thile, John Reischman and many progressive indie-bluegrass bands. And I discovered Blue Chip picks about the the time I started to get serious and I completely agree - they are absolutely worth every penny; they produce a rich, full tone on an instrument that too easily can sound thin, even tinny on the upper string pairs. I'll never go back. Thanks for plugging a great, five-person company that still ships their picks with Alan Goins' business card. All of this is way more info than you need or care to hear, but I have to add that I've been taking lessons from a mandolin player who loves jazz and plays it well and my love for jazz is being rekindled. These videos are always 5 stars! I always learn so much about the subject. You have to appreciate a company that goes out of its way to do right by its customers. Granted, Blue Chip are probably a small company, but that what makes it even more important for them. Word of mouth(or video) goes a looooong way to increasing exposure and sales. Larger corporations don't have to care about small customer inconveniences, but the ones that do are always noted in my book! I don't play well enough to warrant a $40 pick, but if I ever felt I needed it, I know where to go.

Love the Blue Chip sound! Got one as a gift too and fell in love. Especially good for taking the "cut" out of a particularly brash instrument or set of strings. Almost like a high pass filter but also has a mid bump to it too. The way the material slides over the strings is like nothing else. I've probably tried over 100 different types of pick ( I was in a tone hunting phase, went nuts on strings too.) Nothing else has the same feel or sound.

Absolutely agree with everything you said about Blue Chips. I also ran into them during my mandolin pick search (one of the most maddening things about playing mando. The equivalent of guitarist's search for "the amp"). Was actually gifted one by a friend, and immediately was a believer. I also know the incredible, heart-wrenching pain of losing it! Haven't been able to bring myself to invest $35 in another yet, but I'm getting there. Closest commercially sold I've found is the Dunlop Primrtone, but not the same!Keep up your good work. Thanks For the info. I'm a big fan of Chris Thile, and the photos that you used suggest that your are as well. Seen him live twice. Once doing the last officially named " Prairie home companion." show. Where I got lucky and ran into him on the street and was able express my appreciation of his talent. A nice human . Then again not long afterward playing a two plus hour solo show. Blown away the whole time. One of the best musicians of any style out there now. I'm still messing about with it but lately I've been trying to better understand what the chords actually are. What a terrific story. Bravo. I am editing this post, because I bought a pair of these picks; two finger picks, and a thumb pick. They are, hands down, the finest picks I have ever used. Beautiful tone, so comfortable to wear. A friend of mine recently gifted me a tpr50, he won a couple in a competition a couple of years ago but as he's mainly a fingerstyle player he figured id get more use out of one than he would. Thanks for your great story. Stumbled over your video channel and I fully agree Keith. A friend of mine - when I picked up a new PRS - just handed me his pick for my test play ... and frankly with normally using the Jazz III I was immediately blown away by the tone. It was a Bluechip and it was immediately outstanding. And .... almost not interested in the guitar anymore (still took it), it was the tone the pick creates which caught my immediate attention - even if his pick was not my choice of shape and form. That alone tells you something ... you pick up an expensive PRS and you stare at the pick which created that tone. Ordered a TAD 50 and a IBJ55 over here in Germany with wonderful - 'I stay where I am holes'. Being an original classical guitar player (with all the fuzz on perfect nails / tones) I can tell you what a great tone is. And these pick are different. You have been lucky to find your right away ... I have order 2 more to find mine in terms of shape and thickness, but the ones I have are already so much better of what I had before. So, great video and you message is genuine and true. And I am furthest away from being endorsed.

Keith, you speak the truth. I bought one for my mandolin, and one for guitar. My new dog ate the one for my guitar. So, I bought two new ones for guitar. Once I tried Blue Chip, I will never go back. I’ve been playing guitar since around 1978 when I was 11 years old. Needless to say, I’ve tried a few different picks. Great video!

I have 3 different Picks I use for various styles and sounds. I use a Fender Jazz Medium 358 if I need to play fast leads or lots of note and chord changing. The Size helps me hold it for the faster attack. I use Vintage Ernie Ball Stainless Thin for Acoustic Guitar stuff and seems to make the Bronze Strings Ring a littler sharper. Then I use a Ernie Ball Medium Steel pick I drilled 3 holes in the top section to keep it from sliding when Im doing a lot of Rhythm Chord style playing on Electric. To find the right Pick is like everything else for a player of any level. It's a tool and having the right one for the right application and person like an Artist that Paints having that one special Brush. It took me 20 years to really get what was I missing and it was as simple as a Pick. Amazing what a Piece of Plastic, Nylon, Metal can do when transferring ones hand movement to transfer to the instrument. That said very cool Video Keith " 5 " and great story about how your son got you the right Pick.

The thing about good media, good journalism or good music for that matter is that it gives hope to the listener. Quality, humility, caring and desire to be good equate with love. There are a lot of assumptions about the world now and unfounded claims that things have never been worse, and I don’t think that is true at all. On Limitations and picks: I had a similar pick that I believed to be made of ebony. It cost $25 dollars about 10 years ago. I also had a back up, and also couldn’t find another to match it’s tone. I lost one of them at a jam session about 5 years ago. I lost the second one at another jam session, just recently and one week before I finished building my dream guitar. I was crest fallen, until I decided to turn that limitation into a creation. I had used “Purple Gidgee” in my guitar build; an Australian timber that is as hard as Ebony. I decided to fashion two picks out of that timber. Not only is the tone delightful, but it also matches the guitar which I designed and built myself. So loosing the puck I had coveted for 10 years became a blessing in disguise. Happy Days!

Great video Keith. Last summer one of my mandolin students gave me a BC pick and I have much the same reaction as you in that it's the best pick for mandolin I've ever found. The price is steep and not wanting to lose it so I don't use it on gigs but that will probably change when we get back to the world where we can actually play gigs ! Stay well .

Sounds like your boy is a real good kid. I remember when I was young, it was so hard to figure out the right gifts for my mom so it makes me smile to hear you say that your son got you the perfect gift and that you use it every day. My mom is more of a cooking person than a musician so her "blue chip pick" was a nice German kitchen knife that she still raves about years later, and I know she uses it often because I'm the one who comes over and sharpens it occasionally. Be good to your parents, folks. Give them thoughtful gifts that show you're listening and interested in their hobbies. It'll remind them of what a good job they did raising you every time they use it.

I’ve been digging those Dunlop Ultex lately. I’ve tried brass picks, and stone picks before. The stone picks are cool. They slip and glide off the strings in a way that just feels good.

i agree completely with acknowledging a good company that stands behind it's product and customer service!. i carry small 2-2 1/2 inch pocket knives with me wherever i go and i use to lose them regularly until i started using the small watch pocket in the right front pocket area, maybe that might work for you as well. though i would never spend that much on a pick, i am not a player like you and probably most of your viewers, i do appreciate the content and good will! thanks....

I tried the “watch pocket” in my jeans years ago. I’d forget the picks and find them in the wash (if I was lucky). But it should work. Makes total sense. Keith

nice kudos, Keith. I love HAWK picks...very resistant and nice balanced tone with great string separation. I use TB4 with speed bevel and 2 mm thick, grip holes. I play one now for 4 months and almost no wear, the other waits to be used next year I guess.

I'm 52 and have played semi-pro since my early 20's. 5's are quite rare in my book. My 20 year old Taylor 310-CE and my PRS Custom22 which is almost as old. Neither has ever let me down and I rub 'em clean with a rag and maybe some polish once or twice a year as a thank you.

As a fly fisher/guitarist also i would say there are many equivalent to the $40 pick in both worlds! Must be something that attracts a certain type of person! (BTW I have a blue chip and love it. But I'm afraid to use it for fear of losing it, even if just in my house.)

I have a similar experience with Devilpicks, Ilaria is an Italian luthier that makes handmade picks. For five picks I pay 40€ (roughly 40$) and I love the fact that you can have alluminum, wood, bone, vinil and other materials made picks for the same price. I bought recently (3 years ago) a batch of 3 plexiglass picks an amaranth wood one and a bone one, I have a really heavy right hand and normal picks last me nearly six months, I used to go through lots of picks, but now it has been 3 years of the same pick (a 3mm green plexiglass big triangular shaped one like yours) and has the exact same sound of a new one. Since then I saved up 25-30€ per year, is not much but I feel better because I can spend the money I wasted for cheap picks on stuff that I need. Currently I love my round V-picks. Love that they stick to my hand. I can’t hold on to other picks because of this feature. Sounds like the blue chips do this as well.

I ordered one. My current favorite pick is a Hawk pick. I got the blue chip on and it sounds equally good. It is a little thinner (and the next size up is a little too thick). It will make a good backup for me. I loved your story. I really believe in the premise of your video. Thanks for sharing.

Keith, I loved this video because I too, play blue chip picks. As an avid pick collector for years, this one has become home for me. I play a 35 Jazz pick. I use it for everything from my Taylor Koa K24CE to all my electrics. For mandolin I have a Blue Chip 60 with speed bevel. Like you, I was so concerned about losing my original that I bought a second, with my name on it. Plays EXACTLY like the first. Oh, and I’ve never misplaced the original. My friends who have tried it love it. When asked about the cost, I explain that a violin player pays BIG money for their bow, because that creates their sound. I’m spending $35 for a pick to play on my high quality instruments. I know to some it sounds like I’m justifying the expense, but for me it’s worth it. And like you, I’m not sponsored by Blue Chip. Just my 2 cents worth. Thanks for all your videos.

I've made picks from everything imaginable. Counter top laminate is good, got the ivory from and old piano and made some good picks, but they have a little too much bite. Any material could be made into a plectrum, knowing how to use it properly is the trick. Thanks again for this helpful information. Remain in the sell mode and with some success. I am a gospel writer and and sing a bite, but also enjoy single string stuff, proficient enough to have fun at it. The right pick is essential.

dunlop primetone is my choice of pick. i like the bevel. i also like 'grip' which causes the pick the 'stick', it is laser etching? that really grips skin. after a year i compared it to a brand new primetone and could actually begin to see some 'wear'. the tone is 'prime' from this material.

I bought mine at bluegrass camp at the merch table, which had the distinct advantage of the ability to try out every pick in the Blue Chip catalog. Also picked up the pick wallet nice lil key chain thingie. miss the smokey mountains wife and might retire there down in Maryville TN

I have been using Blue Chip picks since they first put their picks on the market, which I believe was 2008. One of my mandolin students came to a festival I playing, handed me a TPR 40 and said, “try this”. I played the next set with that pick and immediately fell in love with it.

Oh I had mentioned in a response it sounded great and maybe I’d make a video on it so people could hear it plugged in. It’s for sale in my Reverb shop, we could work direct too. Didn’t realize you were interested in it. I could even do a quick video and upload as unlisted and email you a link to watch it. It’s a good Gibson for sure. Would love to keep it but I bought it for the flip. I haven’t tried the 336 guitars. Are those the solid wood versions? Little different pickups? Saw you playing one in a video I think, looked and sounded amazing.

@@bbmade That was my 390, fully hollow. The 336 has a single piece solid mahogany back and side routed out and a carved solid maple top. I've heard mixed reviews and it seems they are just very variable with the wood. Each being unique but a step closer to a Lester than the 339.

Interesting, I haven’t had a chance to play one of those. I still think the pickups make the biggest difference with electric guitars. Depending on the style of pickup, if they’re are wax potted or not will make more of a difference than the wood used. I’m not trying to pry open Pandora’s box and debate the merits of that, just laying out my perspective. If I ever get the chance for try one you’d be the first to know!

I have a ton of picks for different sounds. Carbon fibre, tortex, nylon, horn, bone, wood, metal. There is ONE pick type that is "my" sound. I've struggled with different equipment and settings and found it was the pick that got me there. I still choose "not" my sound often for various reasons, but there's one pick type I return to as my core sound.
