I love how the number 8 front end turned out, just fantastic work. This could definitely be the direction I go when I start bobbing mine.

By far the best faux rust process I have ever seen. I have the Metal Effects kit on order for my 1970 Triumph hardtail project. I plan on doing the tank and fenders.

I just sent you an email with a photo of my Triumph gas tank after applying the Metal Effects kit application.

What a beautiful video. I belieb1959 when they outlaw the front part on the bikes. Great looking bikes.

I came across this video while looking for some ideas for a project bike I'm about to start working on. I'm in the same position you were in: the bike is mechanically flawless and has a black/ghost flame paint job that has been immaculately maintained and garage-kept for its entire life. Having said that, I absolutely MUST change it. As I said, it's in perfect condition but I just don't like the paint. It's not something I like, and I much prefer muted colors and more classic styling. So seeing this video has helped me immensely. I may or may not incorporate some of the rust look into the bike (and if I don't use it on this one, you can bet that it will be used on something I build in my lifetime). More than anything, seeing your project reminded that it doesn't matter that it's got a flawless paintjob already if I don't actually like the look. I'd almost resigned myself to working around the ghost flame look because I kinda felt bad stripping off that factory paintjob. But your video convinced/reminded me that I should make the bike mine in whatever way I want. It doesn't matter what condition the bike is in; if I don't like it, I don't like it. Blue Collar Bobbers has definitely gained a new fan (your website is pulled up in another tab and I'm gonna peruse it now), and you can bet that I'm going to do exactly what needs to be done with the paint on my bike: turn it into dust on my garage floor.

Buy yourself some "plum brown" it's made by Casey's I believe, it's used to brown flintlock rifle parts... I did the sheet metal on a 70s shovelhead bobber... 2 coats and set over night... very little prep... rust flaked up big time the next day... then scrub it down with soapy water, after it dries use BLO boiled linseed oil, rub it in and buff it off... Really looks nice! Dark brown.

BCB...FYI, (and a tip for your viewers) I pulled a baseball sized wop (no kinks in the metal though) out of the tank on my Shadow with a square wood dowel and hot glue. It took several tries but eventually it popped out ... then I just rubbed the spot down removing the glue and polished it out with white compound. It's is almost invisible and NO repainting.
@cherylwise37647 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your method. It's amazing what you can do with a little thought. Be sure to check the inside of your tank for rust. If the sealer inside was cracked it could give you problems. Sealing your tank may be something to consider?

I love the rat bike/Mad Max look. It gives a lot of "history" type look to the bike. The thing that gives away those is the shiny chrome. :D But always good to see a new video from you, Mr. Lance. :)
@cherylwise37647 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. I hope to get time to black-out the bike. It would be much better!

Oh, cool. Is the update going to be shown in Blue Collar Bobber, or your personal KZbin channel? Either case, have fun.

Those two front fairings look like old-time farm tractor grill and hood. It seems period appropriate for a rust project.

I don't know if anyone mentioned yet but of you're down to bare metal already, you don't need to waste money on rust paint and products of kind. all you need to spray on the metal is Hyrogen Peroxide, salt and white vinegar mix. the metal will turn into rust natural rust surface rust almost immediately. then soak a rag with diesel oil and rub it off. done
@geraldscott4302Ай бұрын
I agree. REAL rust.

on screen the "star wars" one almost looks like wood. rly like the last one you did, even tho i would have left some design with the green flakes as contrast on the tank

That “dropping” around minute 16, still exist? I was reading the reviews of the product online and somebody complained that over time, it all just turned one color and the streaking that he wanted it disappeared. Do you find that to be true?

not sure if it's been mentioned but you could plasti dip first. then do this rusting process. no messing up the clear coat. and when you get tired of it just peel it off. paint stays safe
@cherylwise37647 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I've never tried the Plasti-dip but your idea is cool. Next winter I'll experiment with the Plasti-dip. Thanks so much, Lance at BCB

This is awesome. I have a stupid question if you don't mind. when using the Rust Activator does it make only the iron paint rust or the tank as well?

I love the bobber look that you give to your bikes but these look unfinished with only parts of the bike rusted. Most of the bike is brand new looking mixed with a few rusted parts, you need to do the whole bike. Just a thought.

Iv'e ridden Harleys for 35 years and never bought a new one. The reason is three fold. New is way too expensive, mine never, ever stay stock and dealers generally suck. (Must say there are a few good ones out there, but overall have gotten worse over the years) There are so many aftermarket parts for Harleys I rarely visit a dealer, much less step foot in a service department. Just my take on Harleys. As soon as " new" Indian Motor Co. has been around longer and the used market builds and aftermarket parts show up I'll give them a shot. RB

Hmm, Nothing to do with me being a former 'painter' of all things... but I guess rust just looks like perforation is nearby - I don't dig rusty look - but cool bikes anyway
@BlueCollarBobbers6 жыл бұрын
Who would ever think that rusting something on purpose would be cool. It's fun and easy. It gets a ton of attention too. At a distance it looks like a really matt brown. You may get a potential customer that wants rust. Remember us at BCB. Thanks so much, Lance and Cheryl

how about next time you show yourself actually doing any of this. you say how to do it then all the sudden, it's magically done. It is a good idea and look. how does it last?

Sometimes I feel like my video's are too long. Next time I'll actually show the process in action. I added a little more clear coat after the video was finished. It holds up great and cleans up very well. It's nice because you won't have to clean the bike often. Thanks so much, Lance at BCB

I don't think it looks good at all. It looks mostly like you are trying to cover up something you just didnt like to begin with. And by doing this I believe you just screwed up big time. Now what are you going to do, clean up your mistake?

Sorry, I think it's weird and bizarre to want to make your ride look like rusted junk. Normally people take rusted junk and restore it.
@nodrtbike6 жыл бұрын
I think it's weird to spend big bucks painting a bike only to see it turn into a piece of junk over time... you lack understanding chris. Bluing or plum brown as is the finish on a flintlock rifle have been used for years to put a finish on steel. I think it's weird to spend a fortune on a cookie cutter like you ride. Rat bikes rule!

Hi Tommy, everywhere I ride the bike people go crazy. I've had people pull me over to ask about it. I've had people take pictures and video's as I'm going down the road. My morning rides are my favorites. People have frowns on their faces because they are going to work. They smile and give me thumbs up. The bike was beautiful. Now it's incredible!! Thanks, Lance
