What’s sad is blue crabs used to be about that size every time you caught one. (Talking about the ‘80’s). I’m not sure if it’s overfishing or what, but I remember a few years where suddenly every crab caught was way too small. And ever since then, it’s like they haven’t been as plentiful or as large as they were in the 80’s. I haven’t gone crabbing in 20 years though, so I have no idea about it anymore. Probably has replenished again. Maybe it’s just a natural cycle. It’s just that for about 10/15years where I was crabbing at, all the blue crabs caught were small. It was so bad, we just stopped crabbing. Had to throw most back. We’d catch all day and have about 3 keepers which isn’t enough for a family dinner, so we’d throw those back too.
@TheOldCoupleOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
We've found that crabs of a particular size hang out together, we'll find a spot where most of the crabs are small and go to deeper water and most are large but there are still plenty of crabs out there for a nice dinner. When I was a kid in the 50's you could catch a bushel with handlines or box traps in a day.

Just happened upon this video. I live now in the Arkansas Ozarks, but when I was a child my dad and an uncle used to take me crabbing with them in the shallows of Tampa bay. The water was calm and crystal clear, and only waist-deep on the adults, so they would merely scoop the clearly visible crabs off the sea floor with a crabnet, and plop them into a #1 galvanized washtub floating alongside. Then we would have a crab boil on the bank. This lovely couple has brought back for me some sweet memories. Subscribing.

I hear those crabbing days are over in most of Tampa Bay area but in the old or upper Tampa Bay area they still have crabs. Plan on moving back there myself. The benefits of living in Florida is they have the best tax deductible rates for seniors and there is still good crabbing. Check out a guys channel called jimmies and sooch.

Galveston oh galveston. Lived on that spit of sand for 2o + years. Been on mainland for about just as long. So sorry you only caught small crabs. But its been overfishing for so long. I've begged for a moratorium of 3 years just to let them rebuild naturally. Best we got is 5 inches size point to point for retention. But I think it's to little to late. Beach crabs are better than bay crabs to. I think . But I hope you'll visit us again in April may and June when crabbing is at its best and you can catch a meal of good ones.

And me. I live in the UK and never heard of Old Bay seasoning until I watched Sam and Joyce’s videos. Now I can’t cook without the stuff😂 only downside is I have to order it off eBay as most retailers don’t stock Old Bay in the U.K so have to get it imported from America which obviously means it’s quite expensive, but definitely worth the wait🙂😋
@davidgraham26732 жыл бұрын
@@matty6848 , Old Bay is simply the best for seafood, and especially for boiled shrimp, and crab. I especially like to peel shrimp, dip them in a tiny bowl with Old Bay powder at the bottom, and peel the next as I'm eating the one I just peeled. That's full strength and so tasty.
@matty68482 жыл бұрын
@@davidgraham2673 yeh I ordered some Old Bay off eBay and it has its all imported which I think is better because your buying the genuine stuff. See if Old Bay was stocked on the shelves in the UK because we have a big nanny government they make the producers take out way too much sugar and salt so it would be ruined. Same as American cereal. I’ve had lucky charms in America and their lovely, taste the UK version they taste different because so much sugar is taken out. That’s our silly health obsessed government for you. We’re adults and should be able too decide what we eat, not our government.

@@matty6848 , I completely understand. We have the same issue here with goods from Europe. I'm happy to hear that you can get the true version, I just hate it that you have to pay an exhorbitant price. When I was stationed in Germany, the locals there preferred true American Marlboro cigarettes over the ones they could get. The interesting thing was our Marlboro packs have twenty cigarettes. The ones that Germans could buy had either 19 or 21 cigarettes, but never twenty. I'd help out my German friends by gifting them a carton here or there. The older Germans especially liked the real ones.

@@philortiz7519 yes I’ve heard the full moan cycle has a direct effect on how big the blue crabs get. For someone in the UK who forages for common brown crab which is what we mostly catch I’ve never heard of the full moan cycle that changes the size of the crab or it’s meat so much. I find that fascinating. So basically the moan cycle will more or less dictate the crab size and meat?
@philortiz75192 жыл бұрын
The moon cycle does not change size of crab that comes from the molt. But it dictates the amount of meat in the crab. Now I can only say that about blue crab and stone crab claws. But it is fact that the fuller the moon the fuller the crab is with meat. Promise. Like I said it's amazing to see how they fill in and wane along the cycle. Im still trying to figure out what causes the meat to dissipate and how quick. They are never empty but they certainly do fill up under full moon. I only crab the the week building upbto and under the full moon. Anyone else have info would love to learn it.

Joyce, don't forget the recipe of pan frying them in olive oil and garlic and other spices you like. After they are almost cooked, add some oregano and fry a little more to release the flavor of it, you won't be sorry. 🦀🦀🦀

When you’re using multiple hand lines, it’s always good to put a bobber on your line. I personally use balloons because they’re cheaper. Just blow the balloon up a little bit tight put it on your lines when you get done pop it and go home.😂😂

In the late 1970's my grandfather and I were crabbing underneath the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and he caught a crab that was 1 foot from tip to tip ! That was the biggest crab I ever saw in my life !

These folks was sure having fun. Then they realized that they are old and doesn't have the balance or coordination like when they were kids. They are basically risking their lives just to catch a few crabs. But for those huge tasty blue crabs, it's well worth it.

I'm from Maine and the skeeters and black flies are relentless and drive me nuts, especially on the shores of ponds and lakes. Once I'm on the water they don't bother me.
