The design team did a great job with the arrangement of the Jojo's music; it keeps the soul of the original source material while adding that staple jazzy Blue Devils sound to it. The sudden key change at 1:05 in particular is really excellent. And kudos to the performers for playing it so well!

When I first heard the Blue Devils play this last year (early in the season), I said to myself that this was going to beat; it reminded me of the classic BD days where jazz was their unique identity, and my thought process proved to be correct! DEFINITELY my favorite song of last year!

The JoJo movement is staged and performed with Fellini-esque relish by the guards-it’s a bit of an elaboration on the multicolor whorls, sinews, and movement in Through A Glass, Darkly.

Can someone explain to me how JJBA fit into their theme

JoJo commences the upbeat movement that conveys the Fauvism artist, Henri Matisse's "rise" from his former medium to the almost exclusive use of cut-outs to "cut into colors" despite him being physically impaired. That is precisely what the JoJo anime is all about - the triumph of leveraging one's own special abilities -- or "stands" as they call it in the anime -- to overcome obstacles. Don't blink during this movement or you will miss the group of 30 or so guard members near the right side of the field, using hand gestures alone to form the shape of the Japanese katakana letters for "Go! Go! Go!" which is the famed, titular utterance of the main character Jotaro.

@@jakqer eh that's a little bit of a stretch but thanks for the answer. I think someone just wanted to have JJBA in DCI 😅 And I hate to "umm, actually" but I think yare yare daze/good grief is Jotaro's catchphrase. Or ora ora. Are they really spelling out go go go in Japanese? I wonder why.

Coming from a person who didn’t march in a Drum Corps style band but a HBCU style in high school and college, I have two questions ,first why not play a sousaphone ? and why yall wear those kind of uniforms ? No disrespect but it’s kinda looks goofy . Just curious 😊

they use marching contras instead of sousaphones for a more cohesive look for their brass, also they can visually do a lot more with them since theyre not wearing the instrument these uniforms theyre using in this show are made up from shows from the past years, the uniforms are actually very fitting to the show theme which is about an artist who used different sheets of colored paper to create art hence the show name: The Cutouts

I usually don't comment in offense or defense of much about DCI, but what is this show? The theme is utterly impossible to figure out if you don't read an online synopsis, and the Jojo music has nothing to do with anything. It just gets put in to get a rise from the crowd. Not to say it's not amazing musically or that the performers didn't kick ass, since I'm no hater. I'm just not a fan of what their design team did this time around.

I don't know anything about these marching band performances, I just wanted to watch the vid cuz it looked cool but I didn't know there was a theme or anything. Is this some type of competition? Could you please put it in simpler terms? I really want to understand what you're implying. Like, what was wrong with this performance? Cuz I think it's super cool. (I'm not coming at you, I genuinely want to know, I'm curious.
