i remember watching part of this as a beginner trumpet in 6th grade and had no idea what dci was and because it was the bluecoats and their uniforms looked similar to the colts uniforms (the nfl team) i just assumed the colts had a marching band and i stopped watching it. man if i could go back in time and tell myself “go down the rabbit hole keep watching these videos” i feel i’d be better off as a player and i might’ve even marched a corps by now. i still got 5 years so there’s still hope lol.

I can guarantee you that if you looked into the open class corps (or SoundSport) you could easily find a open spot and do a video audition. In my personnel experience, the only thing stopping you is yourself and money.

@@thanosmaster-abel559 why not be different. being different is good. if all shows had the same military style feel to it, it would just be boring. every year i feel bluecoats has always done something unique to their show like for instance the keytar solo and like their 2019 and 2021 shows. they used The Beatles for their entire rep. all these things makes them a crowd favorite, whereas a group like Blue Devils, i feel, tries to ONLY appeal to the judges. idk just my opinion though. i think things like a keytar is good. it attracts more people. there’s lot of people that cap on band people because of those stereotypes and as a result the activity is seen as nerdy or weird to most. but things like this i feel will make some people see what the activity is and they may actually start to respect it

This show is what made me pursue music. It was my first year marching band I was in 7th grade with a poor 1a school. We took a trip to watch dci and it was so amazing. I had never been so impressed by a show in my life before going there. I wish I paid more attention to other corps but I was mesmerized by them those impacts were unlike anything I had ever heard. The marching was like nothing I had ever seen. Went on to be a leader in the band and we made it to state finals and got second place my senior year. We broke school history for the first time in over 20 years. Music gave me that distraction in life and I hope it can continue to help others in similar situations

Yes and No Downside Up is the first time a corp 1. Featured props on this scale 2. Wore a Uniform that was...not a Uniform 3. Featured this many speakers (okay this was technically 2015, but Downside Up did it more) Tilt was a great show, but when you look at the history of shows. No group started using big props until Bluecoats did it in 2016. No group ventured from the standard Uniform until Bluecoats did in 2016. The only thing that didn't really follow was the trend of placing speakers everywhere.

I’ve had a soft spot for the Bluecoats for as long as I’ve known of DCI because the first DCI show I saw was them. It was irl, but it was 2017 Jagged Line. I went into more research after, and found after not long that there are so many more corps that are amazing. Bloo will always have my heart, and I will always rank them first. The Bluecoats actually inspired me to join band in middle school. I’m in high school now, doing marching band, and their GoPro videos have encouraged me to make my own vocals. I base my vocals off of goofy things that happen in the band stands (where the band is during sports games) and goofy things that the band directors say, as well as some things from my favorite shows. Examples “Nacho cheese mouthpiece” (band stands, someone put nacho cheese in someone else’s mouthpiece) “DO THE THING!” (My band director) “The s3xy train is leavin’ the station TOOT TOOT! Check out this kaboose!” (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Charles Boyle)

My first year watching was 2014 and there were plenty of good shows then, and there’s plenty of good shows now. However I knew that when Bluecoats did this in 2016, if they won that it would change the activity forever. When it happened I knew it was going to change for the worse as far as crowd-entertaining shows are concerned. However since 2021 I can’t remember being as entertained as I was for some of those shows, ie Cadets, Phantom, Colts (who I used to not really be a fan of, completely changed now). For 22, the top 4 corps were all awesome and crowd pleasing in their own ways. Crown was awesome, Bluecoats were awesome with those car axle props, Boston’s guard and clarity, and honestly BD’s music. Playing Tank while marching marching, and they weren’t exactly halted for their closer either. Hopefully dci is on the rise as far as entertaining shows are concerned.

There’s a part of me that will never forgive this drum corps for turning DCI into what it has become. It certainly has its audience, but there is a huge contingent of drum corps fans that would go wild if the Bluecoats showed up in their 2014 uniforms, the Cadets in maroon and gold, SCV in Aussies and so on. PR and Troopers were the closest thing to an “old school” drum corps show we had this year. And fans loved them for it. It’s remarkable how complex these productions can be but still have so little substance to them. I won’t hate on anyone for loving this stuff, but it’s just not that interesting to me. I’ve watched every year for the last 30, and 2016 on has really lost me.

I wanna see bluecoats with feather helmets again.. I wanna see just one corps bring back G bugles .. Just once a show with no electronics .. Or a show with no massive field props that limit drill..I wanna see Madison play angry again.. How about one show where the hornline doesn't endlessly dance around and what is done matches the music.. a cartwheel or tumble move is cool but doing it constantly is corny and in the end it doesn't match the music.. Same thing with this era of playing a fast set of 16th notes for a few measures.. Its cool til its done the whole show then its confusing and the effect is lost..

@reynolds727
@reynolds727 2 жыл бұрын
@@josephsheehan6079 There’s maybe a little of that, sure. I’m not afraid to admit I have some biases. It’s hard not to have some of those things after three decades of fandom. There were shows from the 70’s through the 90’s that I didn’t really care for, but it didn’t diminish my love for the activity and the art form. The winnowing away of each organization’s visual identity in the name of show design has. The constant need for individuality and ego over uniformity and corps identity is really summed up by “the wink.” Some love that, I get it. It makes me sad to see all of that long standing tradition disappear. That tradition and identity is what made up so much of the “substance” to me. It gave me something to latch onto while the activity progressed and changed with the times. This corps. This show. This one. It removed the core of what I loved so much about the drum corps activity, and tossed it aside as if it meant nothing. I’m still a little butthurt about it if I’m honest.

Same here. Each show today is no more than BD clones. Stand still during the fast moving parts, move during the whole and half notes. Oh, and throw a bit of cheese for the audience to eat up. No real feeling or in-your-face shows anymore. The wall of sound is nothing more than a chain link fence.
@reynolds727
@reynolds727 2 жыл бұрын
@@sbyrstall to be fair, BD just took the formula presented in this show and perfected it. People kind of bag on them for doing so well, but their design team and staff is totally clued into what does well competitively. 2016 Bluecoats made them change their formula in 2017. Uniforms? Gone. Hats? Gone. Drill? Gone. They fine tuned each caption to the formula presented in this show, and came up with a win. I don’t fault them for that, but I certainly don’t have to like it :)
