Blue fin tuna are back 🐟 and anglers are keeping it that way

I used to do a lot of shore fishing, East Coast, and I basically gave up, a miserable day in the rain with no fish due to drift nets etc. A recent trip after 30 years showed me how much the stocks have recovered with 3 very nice whiting. You used to be able to pick up herring off the beach driven in by predators and they are back! And, these beauties follow them. There will of course be a black market develop, they are worth a fortune and skippers need to be vigilant. We need to protect our waters against factory fishers. Oh .... it's not climate change, they were extremely common in the 50's until the herring were over fished, they follow the herring, no herring, no tunny.

They are here because herring, sardines and mackerel, basically oily bait fish are back in bigger numbers

I feel for these guys. Being an angler from the East Coast of USA I get to target them whenever I want. I'm literally about 3hrs from leaving on a bluefin trip. They are incredible fish

Unfortunately the anglers tagging programme is just doing research on fish movement patterns for the commercials, these fish will be wiped out by the Japanese in no time

The French you mean? The EU banned the UK for fishing them but not Spain or France.

As long as all tuna are returned unharmed, and people are encouraged to use heavy tackle to limit the length of fights, I can't see a problem, just as with sharks. We just need a commercial ban or very severe limitations over the whole NE Atlantic.

Do they really need catching and then releasing ? these programs have been done with Atlantic Salmon by the EA on a river local to me and the tagged fish where turning up dead several days later is this going to happen with the tuna ? Sorry but nature thrives on neglect,

Now we are out the EU surely defra should allocate permits to a limited number of boats with a quota of one fish per boat per trip. This will improve tourism and a whole new industry will build up around it. Why should we be so frugal when other countries have no limits.

Greed and stupidity will win in the end. The commercial boys rea already raping the sardines and herring. No bait fish no Tuna and I'm sure the foreign fleets ae not unaware of the Tuna and that will not end well either. I really, really hope that I am incorrect.

Do you've research. We had plenty of blue fin in British coasts until the herring population was destroyed in the late 40's..
