Just a heads up, my channel is being bombarded with spambots impersonating me. If you get a reply from "me" asking you to DM them, or mentioning anything about "telegram", it's a scam. I do not and will never use telegram, and I would never ask random viewers to DM me. Be safe guys, and report any spam accounts if you can!

My favorite genre mixers would have to be Guacamelee (Metroidvania + side scrolling beat em up) and Ultrakill (Boomer Shooter + Stylish Action). Also excited for Gloomwood, a combo of Thief (itself a combo of Stealth and ImmersiveSim) and Survival Horror.

Haven’t seen a game with as good genre blends as… life is strange:true colors? I know very different game but same thing. LIS:TC was very good imo, mixing adventure with RPG, decision based gameplay and dialogue heavy cutscenes. This game takes a bit from every game genre and nicely implements in into the core gameplay

It's been a while, but I remember that one being rather boring, personally, with its overly large, empty maps. I guess it wanted to one-up OoT, but... it focused on the wrong thing. Its lack of difficulty didn't help. You certainly don't have any of Mario 64's movement, either. Its 2D sidescrolling "sequel" is much more entertaining, IIRC. Though, it leans a bit much on the other side of the difficulty spectrum: its boss/castle stages were looooooooong so Game Overs were misery.
@retrauk
@retrauk 2 жыл бұрын
@@VonFirflirch It didn't try to one-up OoT at all. It released a full year before OoT did. It did a 3D Zelda-like thing well before Zelda even did. It's not a perfect game or anything (lack of real difficulty, empty maps, basic movement.) But it has some good points too! (Creative bossfights, fantastic soundtrack, neat setpieces and dungeon design.)

Blue Fire captures something other rpg platformers try to do but often fail to and it's fitting you brought Hollow Knight up in the video because it also did it. Progression of Power Initially you start off weak with very basic abilities in both games. However as you explore both maps of both games, you unlock items and abilities that make it easier to traverse them. And if you are clever, you can even use the environments and in game mechanics to expand your area of exploration as you progress. And at the peak of your collection, you are practically a god compared to when you started your adventure, and you achieved this feat through exploration and grit.

What can I say? You give such a warm love to indie and hidden gem titles in every aspect of the presentation, be it from the sombre tones of a Glover tune, to the bombastic combat music of Rayman 3 (THREE specifically), and every time you compare a game to another, it's because it gives you something you know you love, not that it's copying something that something else does right. I noticed this in full force for Demon Turf, and Blue Fire is a perfect example of this exact same presentation and review style that you do. And this game looks gorgeous, and it's the studio's first title? Well hell, I love the folks who made Snake Pass, and they now work on SACKBOY, so humble beginnings look great. Fantastic review James. EDIT: Also, I just finished watching the Frogger review series again and saw the Toy Trials box in the background. You tease. XD

James does a good job of summing up the appeal of Metroidvanias when he’s talking about growing stronger. Jeremy Parish described it as “the sense of progress as your hero evolves from weakling schmuck to almighty schmuck.” I love ROGs, but I always enjoyed the progression that comes from having new ways to interact with the environment more than simply leveling up.

Argentinian games are such a rare sight, as an argentinian myself, i am so excited for how my country's game industry is evolving, slowly but surely, With great argentinian games like Evan's Remains, this game or Ponpu, i hope more devs from my country can have the spotlight they deserve.

I got this one on sale a few months ago for cheap, I still need to crack it open. I’ve got the PC version. Glad to know I paid good money for this, and I can’t wait to see what cool custom void levels there are.

Not necessarily wanting to compare games but this gives me a lot of guacameelee vibes with the pacing of the movement combos. That sounds fantastic.

Well if we're looking at games like this can we maybe get a look at Mulaka? Its similar, but with a desert theme.

I got this as part of a humble bundle a long time ago but never got to it. This finally convinced me to play it
