Try salting the fish skins to make trailer strips for buck tails and shrimp flies on future trips. Just a suggestion, I just don’t like wasting many parts of the fish. Especially if it’ll get more fish for you. Great video bro, be careful when you’re out there alone. Let family know the map Coordinates where you’ll be. Tether yourself off somewhere for safety my man. 😁👍🏼🍺🎣

That's good advice, tying yourself to the rocks, wearing appropriate shoes and clothing and letting people know your whereabouts is critical. Tie yourself only to the distance to the water, no more. I've only fallen once and it was cold, wet and scary.

That was some good advice about the lings being opportunistic feeders. I got to remember that and switch up baits when nothing's happening. I might have to hit up HMB this weekend and try to catch one. The air quality inn San Jose is garbage. Maybe it's better by the coast 🤔

Every time I try what he's doing, I spend most of the time getting snagged, cutting the lures off, and tying on new ones. It's like throwing money off the cliff. What am I doing wrong? Too heavy of a swim bait that sinks to bottom ? Light ones just seem to flail in the wind.

My question is. Do you need to use such a heavy test when fishing for a fish that may be 20 lbs top? Can you use a 20 lb test for main line with a 10 lb leader. Anybody?
@darrellcook82534 жыл бұрын
It would be a little light if you get hooked up with the kelp. Then it's a game of tug o war. Same if you hooked up with barnacles or mussels. And 20 lbs is the medium size for lings, back in the '70s you could catch 45 pounders which is their top limit. Sometimes its better to be prepared for surprises.

Hey guys? Do I need a fishing license to fish off the rocks like in this video? I know that i do for sport fishing. Im unsure if its needed for this.
@darrellcook82534 жыл бұрын
Yes. Anytime you go out on the rocks in northern California you are being watched. You only find out about it if there's a problem when they loose track of you. And they also cruise for fishing licences and safe practices. I've run into the rangers before, they're there to help unless you are poaching. No wimpy guys and gals here.

@darrellcook82534 жыл бұрын
Anyplace you can safely climb down close to blue water. Around any kelp beds if there are any left. Damn sea urchins ate most of it up. That's the result of starfish wasting disease. Ocean cove in Sonoma county and Stillwater cove. My favorites.

I didn't know lings could be blue! Is this common in California?
@darrellcook82534 жыл бұрын
Yes. It's their diet, unlike the huge mushymeated lings caught in Alaska with yellowish flesh these eat a lot more shrimp and crabs. Rock greenling also has blue flesh and rarely, kelp greenling. Sometimes kelp greenling will have light orange colors and the meat tastes like mud. Been fishing from the rocks around Stillwater cove and Ocean cove in Sonoma county. Haven't been there in a while though.
@balzonurchin4 жыл бұрын
@@darrellcook8253 I'm from Vancouver Island, and caught a lot of lings as a kid. Nothin' but white flesh here. I read an article saying that the colouration of blue lings is a _bile_ pigment. Biologists aren't certain how it ends up in the tissues though.
